You will feel as if you've traveled back in time to Old Italy. Tanino Drago grew up in a small town in Sicily. His father made the family's wine, cheese and olive oil. His mother made the fresh pasta and bread. Tanino it seems was destined to master the art of fine Italian cuisine. He worked at his uncle's trattoria and studied at the Giarre Culinary School. It all comes together beautifully at Tanino's in Westwood. The Renaissance-style building was designed by Paul Williams and built in 1929.

Tanino Ratings and Reviews
it had been quite awhile since I had gone to this restaurant, but it confirmed why I don't. Very limited menu and the portions and prices are way out of line for what is given (salads are truly expensive and not only can they not be split, but bare ok for one person....at $18 for arrugula and/or cut tomato's and very little else I feel it is awful!
The food was good. We reserved ahead, and the place was nearly empty, but somehow we were placed in a corner with an unpleasant view of the messy back corner near kitchen. I asked to sit elsewhere, and the waiter said nothing and didn't respond. Also, when the check came, I asked for it twice, but it had been presented to our guests in error, but the waiter didn't honor my requests for it, to the extent that the evening became uncomfortable and embarrassing instead of what we had planned.
The food is prepared well and I eat here often when going to the Geffen theater, however they have a new abbreviated menu and the high prices do not add value and I don't feel the price is worth what you get. I had the seafood linguine but they did it with Risotto for me. It was tasty but not enough seafood. The beet salad with goat cheese was very good and their bartender is great. I probably will go back for the convince , but I may hesitate because of the prices. Dinner for 2 with 2 drinks, sharing a salad, 2 espressos and the main dish with tip was $155.
When we arrived at the restaurant I noticed some empty tables of 4 and asked to be seated at one of them even tho we were a party of 2. I did this because there were other couples seated at tables for 4. I was told the empty tables were reserved for 4. We were then given a table for 2 in the bar side of the restaurant. Shortly afterward a party of 2 entered the restaurant and were given one of the tables for 4 that I had requested. I don't mind playing by the rules when everyone else is but this really bothered me. It's unfortunate that something like this can mar what would have been an otherwise delightful dining experience.
Absolutely divine Pasta dish, Vodka sauce with Prosciutto - lovely wine list, deliciousi Ceasar salad... my friend and I try to eat "light" so we shared both single items and it was absolutely enough for our supper meal! Servers were delightful, attentive, and caring.
Eating at Tanino's was one of the poorest business lunch experiences I have ever had. The food was way over priced and just mediocre. Even though the place was empty, the service was also mediocre. My guest and I split an appetizer, each had an entrée, coffee, and split dessert. The total bill with tip was $131.00. Good place to experience not much value for cost and hide during the lunch hour!
Tanino has been around for a while and happily maintains excellent food and service. The pasta is perfectly cooked and the sauces are flavorful but not too spicy . The wine list is interesting and nit budget busting. Try the pasta with proscuito or the veal marsala. Portions are generous and the staff is friendly. If you have elderly people in your party, please note that the restrooms are up a flight of stairs. We will definitely go back
It was so hot and they kept turning the air conditioner on only once in a while which seems outrageous for how hot it was. We were sweating. Portions are small for the prices. No good baked bread to serve like you'd expect at an Italian restaurant -just raw bread they stick in a basket. Not worth the $$
The hostess didn't seem very happy to see us even though the restaurant was empty when we arrived. She tried to seat us in a tiny table in a corner so we asked to be seated outside. The special salad $17 we split. We each received 4 tablespoons of salad that was very good but scant for the price. The prosciutto in Vodka sauce reminded me of ground beef in tomato soup maybe slightly spicy tomato soup. The Lasagna with spinach noodles was probably over cooked as it was closer to soup with an odd taste. The staff is stuffy and made no connection.
Food is Delicious! But service erratic. Too long a wait to be attended to, and given wine list. I ordered gazpacho and the waiter brought me hot soup! He brought one caesar salad instead of two. Really no reason as we were there early on a Tuesday night, pre-theatre, and only a handful of customers.
Tanino is wonderful. As soon as you walk through the heavy wooden front door you are in Italy. The place is lovely and very evocative of that wonderful country.
And the food lives up to the décor. My wife and I split the Oso Buco (the portions are large) and it was one of the best we've ever had, on a bed of great saffron risotto. Our friends raved about their food, but I don't remember what they had. The wine we chose, with the waiter's help, was only so-so, but for better you are going to have to pay. And the place is a bit pricy, but for the experience, so what? Go see for yourself.
Great authentic Italian food The owner Tanino Drago is often there keeping an eye on things.
Decor is beautiful, great service. Never have had a disappointment with anything I've ordered .
I don't drink wine but friends that do praise their selection. All in all a first class very enjoyable experience
Over the years, I have eaten at Tanino, in Westwood, CA on a number of occasions and truth be told, never had a bad meal or experience. There is a consistency of excellence both in the food and the service that one yearns for. Thus, when I had the opportunity to visit again, I was eager to rediscover an old friend. I was not disappointed, let me tell you!
Service was spot on. Alex, a stalwart at the place for years took care of me with ease and grace. That he remembered me was amazing, and even if he didn’t, he welcomed me like an old friend, and I felt at home. I know the menu a bit, but I wanted Alex to guide me so I allowed him to, in essence, order for me. He did not disappoint.
He recommended a gargonelli pasta with pheasant ragout, morel mushrooms and parmesan cheese. Boy was that terrific! The pasta was cooked perfectly and the ragout was richly engaging, aromatic and all consuming. The morels and the cheese upped the satisfying nature of each bite. When it’s right, it’s right, and Chef Leo created the perfect storm of ingredients to please any discriminating palate, especially mine.
I cannot recommend Tanino enough. Every single time I am lucky enough to eat there, I am reminded what happens if you really care about a meal that features extraordinarily high quality ingredients along side meticulously handcrafted preparation, execution and presentation.
I have been to this restaurant many times and essentially the food is very good However it is extremely overpriced for what you get There were two of us my friend had a drink we each had an appetizer the main dinner and an espresso after dinner and the bill came to $145 The special of the night was grouper but it was overcooked very small portion and said it had a black truffle sauce but didn't taste like truffle at all. We were going to the theater and they did manage to get all her food out on time with time to spare so the service was very good It will take me a while to go back mainly because of the price and the portion size
