TanakaSan is a modern American Asian restaurant. Eric Tanaka's background as a Japanese-American kid growing up in LA's melting pot sets the tone for our playful menu. This is the food that satisfies our cravings. We hope you enjoy eating it as much as we enjoy cooking it.

Server seemed irritated the whole time. Drinks took forever. Never got my second drink, water was good I guess. Food was great! Probably would come back for appetizers and drinks but not for a full dinner.

Tanakasan is a very reliable place for good meal that is nice while still feeling casual. The setting is a bit unique, being open to the building it is inside of, and the noise level isn't quiet, but there is plenty of room between tables so it allows you to relax and have fun. The food varies from decent to outstanding, the dumplings are always worth ordering, the chicken wings are amongst the best in Seattle, the coconut beef is a nice sweet/savory entree, and the shrimp pancake is a real winner. The Happy Hour is terrific, and the house cocktails are very good, especially the sake slushies.

Went above and beyond! I was taking my friend to a surprise party for her after dinner and we were ahead of schedule. I let the host and our waiter know and they were incredibly accommodating and helpful in helping me slow down the meal and get back on schedule! Our waiter Conner and the host (can’t remember his name!) were AWESOME!

We enjoyed the food and the service and we certainly would return. I would have rated it higher, but one of our meals was black cod, a Valentine's special but the portion was just tiny.

Appetizers = 👌
Entree = 👌
Slushi sake fusions = stuff and 👌🍶🍶🍶

The ambiance is great. It has that restaurant background noise but not loud and you can have a nice conversation with your partner. The service was also great. Every time we seemed to need help they were quick to spot us and they also went around the tables seeing if customers would need anything.

The only ding I give it would be their seared tuna entree. The sauce was overwhelming with dill and floral tastes while the tuna was seared perfectly it had no flavor. The beef tataki was delicious so was their version of the okonomiyaki. The katsu omelet was 👌. The okonomiyaki was 🔥. Beef tataki 🔥. Seared tuna 🤮

I’d go again to try their other dishes.

We loved the amazing kimchi crab Rangoon and the crunchy apple salad as a perfect complement for appetizers. For dinner we loved the brothy fishball and wonton hot pots. All delicious flavors and a great date night for $50. So good on a chilly Seattle night! We will be back!

The food and cocktails are offered are all amazing at Tanakasan. The dumpling platter is a perfect share-able plate providing just the right portions to split between two & all the dumplings included were delicious. The mackerel was also some of the best fish I have had in a while. The cocktails are inventive and also quite tasty.

The food at Tanakasan was amazing! The spare ribs were so good (the outside had the right amount of crispiness to the glaze, the meat fell off the bone, and they were the perfect amount of spiciness), the dumpling platter creative and tasty, and the katsu omelette was soooo delicious! But our service was absolutely horrible. Our waitress was not friendly. Every other Tom Douglas restaurant I have been too has had very attentive staff, they ask if you have been there before, explain how things work. She did none of that. I had to ask what the dumplings of the day were and how people generally order (share vs getting own plates). She forgot our drinks and only when she checked in 20 minutes later did she realize they never came. We sat there so long without her interacting with us that the two tables who arrived after us left before us and the host ended up coming over, clearing our plates, asking if we wanted dessert, and bringing us our dessert. She wandered over at some point to give us our bill (before our dessert came out which I thought was a bit rude). So the food was amazing, ambience great, the host was personable but our waitress obviously didn't care. One of the downsides of an included 20% tip.

It’s a good thing we had 21/2 before our Jazz Alley Show. It took that long to get served. Both sets of bar drinks took 15-20 min., they have no bussers so dirty plates sat in front of us till we piled them and asked twice to have them taken away. 20 % gratitutity which considering our service was poor was high. The food was great tho but by time our next set of drinks showed up we had already finished our meal and we were there from 7:15 to almost 9:30. Manager informed us a big party cane in and his bartender was slammed. So we were the ones shirt changed.

Was not super impressed with the food, which could have been forgivable had the service level been better. Was disappointed to spend so much money on a meal, with mandatory tipping/service charge and find that the waitress at a barely full or even busy restaurant cannot even make appropriate table touches during our meal. Will not ever return.

We went to TanakaSan to celebrate an employee's birthday at lunch time. We were seated promptly and the service was efficient and friendly. I ordered a special that was recommended by the waiter and was very disappointed in the lack luster and flavorless dish. The noodles were a little overcooked, the peanut sauce was very bland and pointless and the meatballs had so much lemongrass in them that they were fibrous and kind of hairy in texture -- just not a good dish at all. The others at the table seemed to enjoy what they ordered off the menu, but my special was not special at all.

I will go back, but I will be careful about what I order next time.

I was really excited to try this restaurant. I wish I liked the food better but -- every dish was just OK. No one in our party of 3 finished our plates. The menu sounds amazing but the execution... something was off. One dish was way too salty, another too bland.

Hadn't been there before, but took an out-of-town guest and all enjoyed the dinner offerings. We had the ribs, chicken wings, rangoons, and coconut beef with a side order of stamed rice and the assorted pickles. Everything was really good. We all shared, and got to try some of everything, even though we weren't familiar with these dishes. Ordered an extra round of the ribs, then finished up with a shared (and yummy) coconut pie. Service was good, even though the restaurant was crowded. Had a great time and look forward to going again. 5 stars.

Tanakasan is perfectly located for having a delicious and fun dinner before walking across the street for a show at Jazz Alley. We started with Sake Slushies to drink, so fun! To kick off dinner we shared the Osaka Pancake and Veggie Crunch Balls...melt in your mouth heaven! Three of us shared 2 Dumpling Parties (they live up to their name ;-) and the large portion of the Caramelized Coconut Beef, even better than it sounds, over their Curry Fried Rice Special. It was the perfect amount for the 3 of us. Thank you to our server for excellent guidance. The menu is such that you can share just about everything or order your favorite dish for yourself. Entrees are available in 2 portion sizes. We will definitely be back!

I started with the fried pork/shrimp wontons, which were overly fried -- too brown and crunchy, but very tasty nonetheless. Main course was the seared ahi tuna. This cooked perfectly and delicious. The accompanying salad, although creative, was dry in the mouth because of the mint, and pretty plain without the mint. Dessert was the Douglas signature triple coconut cream pie -- complete perfection.

So, overall, did not meet my full expectations for a TD restaurant, but a good place to eat. I will probably go back to try other appetizers and entrees before writing a full review.

The food was good. The food was pricey. You can get more reasonably priced and tastier dumplings at Harbor City in International District. You can get tastier dumplings at Din Ti Fung.

You also get faster and friendlier service at both the above restaurants. Service at Tanakasan is relaxed as is attitude.
