They've changed the food presentations since our last visit, and we've been here several times. The carne asada and carnitas plates are a hot mess. Meats slathered in sauces with soggy tortillas on the bottom of the plate. Components hardly identifiable. The tacos are now layed out flat on the plate-used to come in nice taco holders that helped the tortillas stay together and not sit in a bath. Uncertain as to our future with this restaurant.
Our favorites are: The Salmon with mole sauce and the Mahi tacos.
They also make an excellent prickly pear margarita.
Took a friend here for her birthday celebration before attending "Hamilton" at the DCPA. The wait staff was welcoming and friendly, and the food amazing. It was the perfect spot to go to before the theater.
So yummy! Went for a business lunch and can’t wait to go back. Service was attentive and personable. Had the lunch sandwich, salad and soup. Gigantic portions. Can’t wait to go back.
My husband and I came here pre-theatre. Service was quick and efficient. I had a wonderful mixed salad that had a bit of "kick" to it and pork tacos that had plenty of meat on them. My husband had the shrimp quesadilla which was pretty small, but good---probably need to order a couple of them if you're really hungry!
The food was expensive for the mediocre fare and the service was slow and somewhat surly. We have dinner in the area frequently and have never been disappointed until dining here.
Great place to dine before the theater. Our service was excellent and the food was delicious.
Great service. Great food. Fantastic tequila list. What more do you need?
I WENT FOR MY BIRTHDAY ON SATURDAY MARCH 10TH AT 11 AM AND IT WAS SO FUN THE ATMOSPHERE WAS AMAZING THE FOOD AND SERVICE WERE FAST AND VERY YUMMY AND THE WAITRESS WAS AMAZING THANK YOU FOR SHOWING MY FIRST TIME AND BIRTHDAY AMAZING
We made reservations for our son and daughter-in-law to celebrate a special occasion. So appreciative of the management and staff! They went above and beyond to ensure they felt special and had a fabulous time. They raved about the food too (of course) and served a special dessert decorated to ensure they knew the dinner was a gift from my husband and me. Super nice and much appreciated.
I have eaten at Tamayo a number of times in the past and found the food to be inventive and delicious. This time however the food and the condition of the table were very disappointing.
Not wanting a large meal, we both ordered fish tacos which were supposed to be Mahi Mahi.
The tacos we were served were bland with minimal additions to a fish that was not as advertised. It might have been tuna or some other meaty fish but it was not Mahi Mahi. There are lots of places in town that serve great, fresh fish tacos. Tamayo is not one of them - I would take it off the menu.
Also the table top was gummy with a tar -like finish that had mostly worn off. I could peel the black residue off with my fingernail ! Please have someone refinish these tops or replace them. This reflects poor management .
Great food. Easy walk to DCPA we really enjoyed ourselves!
This is my favorite restaurant for pre-theatre dinner. Interesting menu. Reasonable prices.
Service was excellent and the food was very good.
Fantastic service -- we had to wait a little past our reservation time for a table and the hosts were incredibly apologetic and even gave us some free extras for our trouble. Our server was very nice and knowledgeable.
Food -- we had the special artisanal tacos (chorizo, beef, pork), mahi tacos, and huitacoche and mushroom enchiladas. All were very good. Not huge portions but we did not leave hungry. Mahi and enchiladas were our favorites of the three.
Drinks -- wouldn't say the cocktails are A+ but they were fine. The traditional marg is just as good as some of the more expensive ones and the prickly pear was sweeter than anticipated.
Value -- felt like with the quality of ingredients, service, and location we got a good value. Again, drinks were the only thing that were pricey for quality.
We went for a quick dinner before a play ... easy walk to Buell. Great specialty drinks, and the tacos did not disappoint. Definitely get the guacamole!
Had a great time with co-workers and friends celebrating the end of the Home & Garden Show after 9 long days. The food was awesome. The Tampiquena was my favorite. Really flavorful. Our server was amazing and the margaritas were great.
Our server, Dustin was amazing - we were well taken care of. My tea was complementary - so an added bonus!
We had a lovely experience, our server, Lacey, was a doll. Our food came out sper timely, the benedict won me over for mexican:) thank you!
Very disappointing. Expensive for food that was just ok. And we were initially served room temperature food. Our server brought us new food that was just warm, not hot.
Great service amazing food. Love the guacamole.
We had dinner at Tamayo before the theater. The service was excellent! The food was good and nice timing of the delivery of the food so as to be on time for the theater, but not feeling too rushed.
My favorite restaurant. Love this place. Actually, I go to Richard Sandoval restaurants any chance I can. When I book travel, I make sure to see if there is a restaurant of his in the area!
We needed a fun and quick meal before going to the theater.
My wife and I went for lunch and we were the 3rd or 4th table seated. The hostess was very pleasant: that was the high point. Our server was, at best, ambivalent and uninterested. We ordered Margaritas (relatively weak) and an appetizer (so-so) which arrived within 10 minutes at which point we placed our lunch order (lunch carnitas, lunch fish tacos). About 30 minutes (!) later our lunch arrived - not cold but nowhere near hot: MAYBE room temp. Since we had an appointment and couldn't afford to wait another 30 minutes we tried to motor-on but could barely pick at the plates. We weren't going to say a word but our server finally asked and we told her: cold food. A manager came over, apologized and offered to "comp" our entrees. I don't know about you but a "comp" for a mostly inedible dish doesn't really pump me up to come back and try again. Maybe if you comped the other $30 we spent + $10 parking. Maybe. So... here's the best: when we got home I discovered that MY OPENTABLE RESERVATION WAS CANCELLED! Sorry but... really? I guess they didn't want us writing this review (yeah... I emailed Opentable and had it reinstated). Anyway... we won't be back. Seriously, QDoba is better. But, good luck if you feel daring!
Had a great birthday dinner. Delicious food. Delicious wine. Delicious dessert.
When Tamayo first opened, it was epic! Hadn't been there for years. Has gone downhill in my opinion. They used to make guacamole table side. Not any more. $23 for ONE chicken enchilada; $4 for the rice and beans. Price isn't really the concern for me when I eat out, but the quality of the food is. Lack lustre; over rated. Wish it weren't so. I used to love this place. Off my dining list. WAY better "Modern Mexican" places out there. Blue Agave for instance....
Food was very good, they sat us prior to our reservation because we were very early, very nice of them.
The waitress was a little slow but pleasant and the drinks were awesome as well.
Will definitely be back with more friends
Love the tuna guacamole with wonton chips and the smoky salsa. Also very good Tamayo Benedict's (3), and Mahi Mahi tacos.
Excellent service and fantastic food. Loved the margaritas too!
This place is overrated. They try way too hard to be contemporary and cutting edge with their menu, but the food is mediocre. My carnitas were over cooked, the beans and the cheese purée we’ll call it were flavorless, and the tuna tartare guacamole was not tartare but chunks of tuna slopped together with so many other silly ingredients you can’t really call it guacamole. The atmosphere was nice and the waitress was good, but we won’t be back.
We were excited to try this restaurant because of how creative/different it looked. Sadly, while the presentation might have been there, the food itself wasn't good. My fish tacos tasted really "fishy" on some bites, but fine on others. The queso was hard to eat and we really could have used more cracker/chips to eat with it, the meat my husband had was very fatty- very little actual meat. Our friends said their dishes were quite salty. It was also very loud. We won't be returning.
It took a very long time for our meal to arrive. The excuse was that they were serving a party of 80 upstairs. Was not happy given how expensive the restaurant is. Would have appreciated an offer of free desert instead of an excuse. My taco dish was a bit cold. The restaurant is a bit noisy, making it difficult to hear a conversation, even though we were seated in the back of the restaurant, where it is generally quieter.
Given my experience, I will not be back anytime soon. I used to love this restaurant.
great location for theater. friendly server but she forgot our appetizers and Carnitas had to be sent back because it was cold.
We went for the brunch special and it appears to be a great deal for all you can eat and drink in a two hour window for $39.00. It was really tough to get drink refills. In all, we had three rounds over the course but often sat there with empty glasses. The food was not enjoyable, it has really gone a bit downhilll. I was not impressed with the food at all. We all decided after that we were not going to go to brunch there again. Disappointing is the word I would use. It could be a great concept and a super fun sunday to go there but it fell really flat.
Met friends from out of town who wanted to see the LoDo area and one of our favorite restaurants and Tamayo fit the bill perfectly! Always one of our favorite downtown drinks/dinner spot. It's perfect for meeting friends, a fun meal with my wife and/or a meal before catching a show at the DCPA.
Really good. Enjoyed the bacon guacamole as an appetizer! I highly recommend the mahi mahi fish tacos.
Food was Delicious!
Thats the good news. We had to wait 10-12 minutes before we saw our waitress and a menu. Drinks came relatively quick, as did the appetizer. The entry was served 3 minutes after the appetizer was served! Terrible timing of delicious food. Will not be returning.
Super fun place to grab dinner before a show at the DCPA. My parents are doing the keto diet and they were able to get meals and really enjoyed it
