Taj Mahal Homestyle Indian and Pakistani Cuisine
A very nice evenibg for all of us. Lamb curry was especially good. Hostess and server were attentive and efficient and the owner/ manager greeted guests at each table. We look forward to our next visit.
The Taj is one of the finest Indian/Pakistani restaurants my wife and I have ever eaten at. And we eat at them all over the world. Boise is so lucky to have this extraordinary restaurant.
Delicious food and great service. Thanks for all the clearly marked vegan options!!
I love this place! The food is delicious and authentic, the ambiance is comfortable and cozy, and the owners are kind, genuine people who care about providing a great experience for their customers. I particularly like the curries here (definitely try the goat Karahi) and I’m also a fan of the Alu Gobi (cauliflower and potato dish). Lunchtime buffet is aways easy and fast; if you go for dinner, be aware that because everything is made from scratch, meals aren’t always so fast. But the wait is worth it!
We ended up waiting for an hour before our order was taken. One of our servers kept misunderstanding what we asked for. This resulted in lots of waiting for things, getting an extra drink we didn’t ask for (but got charged for), and not what we needed. They promised us gluten free naan only to not have it. We weren’t checked in with at all- we always had to try to get their attention. We watched other tables who had gotten there after us be served before we did. Overall, the experience was disappointing. Two hours, over priced (but decent) food, and poor service. We won’t be coming here again.
How in the world can this place get ANY 4-5 star ratings? It was bad from start to finish. First off, the waiter mixed up my drink order with the table next to me. I was sitting alone and the other table had four patrons. She tried to serve me their four drinks. I waited a long time to order and waited a long time to get served. I ordered the Lamb Biryani for $22! which had two tiny chunks of lamb in a huge pile of well-seasoned, but very dry rice. I ordered naan bread that after being told several times was about to be served, I was told that there was an oven problem. They brought it as I was finishing. I said I didn’t want it but they insisted that I ordered it and that I had to pay for it. Alrighty, then. To top it off, had to listen to the patron next to me order Stevia five times from three different staff over a period of 30-45 minutes only to be told Equal was all they had. She settled for sugar about an hour into that request. So, in a betel nut shell, don’t bother with this place.
For ethnic fare, our go-to first choice is always Indian cuisine. We've been fortunate enough to enjoy fine Indian fare in London, Mumbai and several stateside restaurants, however it would be pretty tough to top Boise's Taj Mahal. The food was simply amazing. This is a family operation and everything is apparently cooked from scratch, lovingly, perfectly. The home-made onion na'an bread was off-the charts divine. Not to be missed if Indian/Pakistani cuisine is a top choice of yours.
The food was good, although the service was very slow and when our food was brought to the table it was just randomly placed without thought or knowing which person the food belonged to.
The owner welcomed us, offered a little background, gave recommendations, and was very gracious. The food was excellent, and I had plenty of leftovers to take home. The location right downtown is great! We will return again!
Food was significantly over priced, 20 bucks for 4 tiny pieces of chicken in a tasty sauce is an unreasonable price. I will not be back unless forced to go.
Great food. Our go to place when dining in Boise.
Always consistently great food. Never disappointed.
I felt bad for our server...someone must have not shown up to work or the owner is too cheap to hire more staff. We waited over an hour and a half for our food and missed the beginning of an important concert. Love the food but this was a terrible experience.
A must try; exceptional!
Outstanding service and wonderful food. Can have a group conversation given the atmosphere. Will definitely eat here again.
Authentic fare excellently prepared. The owner Sohail and his son Taj worked the front of the house with a friendly style. I am sorry that I live in Florida and cannot enjoy the experience again soon. I recommend without reservation.
Amazing at all levels! A must for Boise!!
Food was delicious and our server was entertaining and informative. We'll definitely be returning.
Fabulous authentic food! Amazing! Lots of great choices on the menu. Best India food in Boise. Good beer choices on the menu while wine selection limited.
Restaurant upper level across from Ruth’s Chris and next to the Balcony bar so lots of street activity but being inside restaurant on 2nd level takes you away from that (or you can sit in their outdoor patio area to be near the action).
Will definitely go back !
The food here is consistently delicious and authentic; the owner and staff committed to making sure you enjoy your meal. An under-appreciated gem in the heart of Boise!
Best Indian I’ve had almost anywhere
So yummy. We really enjoyed our meal. Really great flavors and textures. We will be back soon and often.
Very good Indian restaurant. Normally, Indian food is heavy but this restaurant has comfortable size and lite taste, still comfortable spicy if you order medium spicy.
Best Indian in Boise.
Excellent food, Friendly service, large portions. Setting feels authentic. Makes for a fun evening. The owner spends significant time at customer tables.
Taj Mahal is hands down the best and most authentic Indian/Pakistani restaurant in Idaho. The service can be slow, but that is because each dish is personally attended to by the master chef and co-owner (with her husband). We have eaten at Indian restaurants all over the United States and England. This one ranks among the top few.
The food was outstanding. It is so nice to have a great Indian food restaurant inBoise. The service however while nice people it was really slow like they had not served food before. Go when you have plenty of time. But be prepared to eat delicious food.
I’ve been to many, many Indian restaurants and this is one of the best.
Superb Meal and Extensive Beer list! Everything about Taj Mahal exceeds expectations, with the exception of the wine list...but the beer list is quite extensive and unique! I would have given it a 5/5 stars overall if the wines stood up to the beer list and the incredibly flavorful and well prepared food!! Excellence is an understatement where the food is concerned! I'll be back!
I was charged $16 total for 2 beers that were 11 ounces each. When I asked if that was a mistake, I was told it was, and that I was charged for the large bottles; but I was still charged $13 total for the 2 beers. They were not an exotic brand, and I have never paid that much for beer outside of a sporting event.
That was not the only negative. I noticed 2 separate people at 2 other tables had to ask for a box and the bill. The service was terrible, and it was not that crowded. We waited 15 minutes after being seated before being ask about drinks or appetizers. It took an hour plus before any food came. When it did come it was bread only, real food was 10-15 minutes later. I believe the food goes best with the bread, and it also helps to have it with the meal when it's hot (15 minutes later it's not hot-and we were so hungry it was gone). The portions were a bit small, with little meat in our lamb dish.
It was a very bad experience, and I would never go back. I recommend skipping this place, unless you have time and money to throw away.
I rated one star only because it was required. What I wanted to say was that we made the reservation, the web site said they were open, but, alas, when we got there the door was locked and the lights were out. It was Monday, Dec 19, so holiday breaks are common-but so are lunches to recognize great employees, which was what I was trying to do.
Went to Wild Root instead -- 5 stars!
The food here is absolutely awesome! The combinations that are offered and the spices and flavors of the dishes are just great! Do yourself a favor and eat here soon.
This was our first time at the downtown restaurant and we were both very impressed with the food. We both had different curries and both were delicious! The heat level was exactly as requested. We will definitely be back!
It took a lot of patience to wait a bit more than one hour for the food to be served for 4 of us. The service was very much out of the picture except when we got some water at our arrival and when our food was finally served. Sadly the service received was below average. The food was ok. but, nothing impressive. The sensual dancing videos on the screen were not exactly a family talk topic so, I would say it's not for everyone. I feel it was expensive after evaluating all aspects of our visit. Being there, done that and not going back. We selected this restaurant because of being part of the opentable group. Lesson learned...don't believe all you see on the internet.
Great food, very very very slow service, but we weren't on a schedule so we just enjoyed ech others company!
Great food with excellent preparation but SLOW service
Loud Tvs playing Bollywood music, strong curry smell, slow service, substandard Indian food, sounds like most Indian/Pakistani restaurants in US? Well this one is definitely not one of those.
Decor; very warm with rich red colored walls with exotic Indian artifacts.
Service; very humble and down to earth. The owner himself comes to check on things, which was a very nice touch.
Food; true Indian/Pakistani flavors and prepared fresh. The menu has lots of options, from vegan and vegetarian to all meats each prepared with different kind of curries and sauces.
To start the meal I'll recommend the vegetable samosa. Three come in one order, great for 2-3 people.
As for main courses, the Chicken Madaras. It's blend of coconut milk and curry spices makes it the right taste of spicy with a hint of sweetness.
The Palak Subzi Dal was also cooked perfectly. The vegetables with spinach paste was a great twist.
For the end of the meal I'll definitely recommend the Rice pudding. It's very creamy and flavorful.
The food was amazing! However, even though I knew it would take a while to get our food(based off of the website), I didn't expect it to take 30 mins to get a drink and another hour for the food.
I'll be back, but will probably call in a "to go" order and show up 30 mins late to pick it up.
This place is fabulous!! Family run, authentic, EVERYTHING IS HOMEMADE!! We can't wait to go back!
We called to make a reservation for that night. Were told hey couldn't seat is until 9pm. Used opentable and got table for 7:45. Ordered but didn't get main courses until 9:15.
Waitresses/ servers seemed like it was the first night for all of them. Pleasant enough but not trained and perhaps none of them had eaten in a restaurant before?
Food was GREAT!
May go back but would make a reservation further ahead and earlier in the evening.
