Although this restaurant has very good food and is pleasant enough they have been very unhelpful with a problem I have had with them and Open Table. I told them when I checked in that I had a reservation. Ostensibly I was told OK and they would confirm it. I then received a message from Open Table the next day telling me I forfeited my points even though I had been there. I have a copy of my confirmation and then a form from Open table to rate the restaurant. Upon calling the restaurant and asking them to make a correction they said I didn't have a reservation. Not only did we have drinks waiting for our table but we spend more than $90.00 on food. I resent that they have been so uncooperative and unwilling to make a small correction.
The food is good and is not expensive. Good ambiance but, like most restaurants, noisy. The single most annoying feature of the place is the painful slowness of the delivery of the food and the wholly indifferent attitude of the maitre-d and the staff. I imagined that the boss must be a terrible tyrant who has, over time, depressed the servers so greatly that, as a reaction, they have decided to take it out on the patrons. No smiles, no sense of welcoming the diners, nothing but a deep indifference to one and all. But, as I say, the food is good. If you don't mind waiting 30-45 minutes for the food and you don't need smiles and a pleasant welcome, by all means. GO!
We'd been here a few years back and recalled in was a positive experience.....and they even exceeded our high expectation this time around. The first thing that strikes you about Tai Pan is the beautiful decor.....definitely many levels above most Chinese restaurants. The menu is huge and varied, our server was knowledgable and helpful, and the entrees were delicious. We loved the clear-glass lazy Susan, and everyone in our party got a taste of everything. A thumbs up!!!
Located on a quiet corner, one block off bustling University Ave, there is a casual elegance about this restaurant. As we walked in, we were greeted with a broad, well-stocked, but otherwise quiet, bar. The hostess walked us in to a larger dining area with muted lights and extensive Chinese artwork, giving the feel of an aristocratic parlor room. So far, so good.
Unfortunately, the hostess seemed somewhat indifferent, and glancing around the room, shrugged her shoulders and asked us to sit at a table that seemed to be extending into the busy walkway. Politely, we accepted and sat down, but immediately felt a cold draft coming from the open door facing the bar, and street outside. Uncomfortable, we asked to move, to which our hostess agreed distractedly.
As we sat down and looked through the menu, no one came by to offer us water or hot tea. Eventually, another server came to take our order, and answered some of our questions, but once again, the demeanor was one of disinterest. While the restaurant was more than half full, it was by no means, bustling with activity so this repeated, casual disinterest from the serving staff was puzzling and disappointing.
What redeemed the evening for us was the quality of food. The Shanghai dumplings were hot and juicy, served with an oddly sour ginger pickle in red coloring. The Spice Lamb in XO sauce was very flavorful, with plentiful leeks as accompaniment. The Singapore vermicelli was a bit too thin and muted in flavor to make an impact, but was a reasonable companion to the meal.
As the evening lengthened and the restaurant emptied, the quality of service did not improve. We did not care to linger for desserts, deciding instead to stroll University Ave where we found am impressive micro-creamery, Scoop, serving a delightful French Violet sundae!
Overall, we enjoyed the quality of the food and the artistic ambience, but the service let us down enough that we are unlikely to return.
We came here for my wife's birthday with 2 small children in tow. The food was excellent, especially their dim sum! The service was still good considering our kids were a handful (as usual). Nonetheless, everyone enjoyed their authentic and delicious food, while I took advantage of their full bar (Macallan 12). Keep in mind that the dining atmosphere is more serious and quiet than your typical family-friendly or happy hour eateries. If you're craving good Chinese food in an upscale-ish ambiance, this is the place for you.
We continue to try this restaurant hoping for improvements. There are no description of dishes just the names. Wait staff cannot describe dishes adequately or in a friendly unhurried manner. Cocktails are very weak, almost taste watered down. Sometimes food too fast then a long wait period within the same visit. Many of the dishes are very good, but the overall experience so disappointing it overshadows the tasty dishes. I guess they don't care. We will wait, then reluctantly, probably, try again. Sorry I cannot be more positive.
Although we made a reservation, we waited 15 minutes before being seated. We were seated in a private room with a family who seemed to be celebrating. It felt odd to be seated in a private room with an event going on. The appetizers arrived late, as soon as the appetizer(s) arrived within minutes the food arrived. The waiter literally stopped by three times. On one occasion he expressed dissatisfaction with the server, a young girl. The food was authentic, hot, tasty, and enough to share. The wine was expensive and the quality low.
The food was so amazing. We considered driving back the next night from San Francisco to eat it again. All of the dishes were so amazing. I had a pineapple chicken dinner and it was served in a hollowed out pineapple. I wish this was a chain so I could have it again.
Peking Duck appetizer was excellent. I would go back just for this and order the Peking Duck entree. The other dishes (lemon chicken and oxtail Pinot noir) were good but not exceptional.
Prices are very reasonable but rice and tea are extra.
Service is ok; no problems but also not refined.
Ambiance is quite good; white tablecloths and cloth napkins and it's quiet enough to enjoy conversations with your dining partners.
I'm a frequent diner and have organized a business lunch meetings there frequently. Food is always good and consistent. Service needs improvement however. Servers should at least pour the tea when it was first. They don't need to refill the cups but at the beginning, they should start the round. This will be an ice-breaker and help with a usual awkwardness at the meeting. Also, many times, I had to ask for utensils such as knives or spoons and it took too long or I had to ask at least three times to get them.
In my opinion, Tai Pan should be considered one of the best restaurants in Palo Alto. It has amazing food in affordable prices. In addition, I believe that this restaurant is a restaurant that you go again. Also, I would highly recommend you trying the duck
Disappointingly poor and inefficient service.
Open table reservation was for 12:30 PM and we were not seated until around 12:50 PM. A busboy table hastily covered with a tablecloth and scrunched into a corner right next to the dirty dishes was intended for our dining. Very sad....
