Szechuan Chef Chinese Restaurant
Good value, fair prices, better than many chinese restaurants we have been to. Lots of vegetarian options as well.
We arrived early about 5:15, had reservations. Service was slow, food was average, prices higher than food quality dictated. Difficult to find in a failing minimall. Won’t be going back.
Food was fabulous but they forgot half our order and we finally left (paying for what we got) after an hour and a half.
It is the o Lynz restaurant in town where we can find the potatoes we used to get in Guangzhou. They are sour and I love them!
A few months back I said that the food here had gone downhill, but went back again and felt that the food was back up to the old standard. My group particularly liked SC's version of steamed dumplings, sesame beef and honey walnut prawns.
The service (at lunch) continues to be spotty - they seemed busy doing everything but taking our order, checking in, etc. We had to get our own chopsticks (no on asked) from the wait stand and after waiting a long, long time for someone to take our credit card so we ended up walking it to the cashier.
In short - good food, less than desirable service.
The cumin lamb was particularly wonderful as were the green beans.
After a previous "bad" experience we returned based on previous visits where the food was lovely. This time our meal was good. However, the service still leaves a lot to be desired.
Food was good but service not the best. Didnt get to see our waiter for at least 15 minutes after seated. Missed taking some of our parties order. Food and drinks came sporadically not together.
I hope this was an "off" day!
This has been one of my favorite Chinese restaurants, but Friday I was there with 4 friends and our meal was not up to the usual standard. The food was cool when we received it; it was also much more oily than it should have been. The kung pao chicken was bland and full of celery and tiny pieces of chicken - not nearly as nice or spicy as the usual kung pao in other places. The eggplant was cold and stringy and greasy. The one dish that was up to the usual standard was the basil beef.
The staff seemed to be completely oblivious to even the most basic of serving protocols - no menus after 15 minutes - finally had to ask; brought the food so late is was cool. They seemed more interested in doing other tasks or chatting with each other than taking care of their tables.
This place was recommended to me by somebody who's family is from Hong Kong. If you want to try something totally different from the Americanized Chinese fare, this is the place. From the soup dumplings & potstickers with Szechaun peppercorn oil, to fish in black bean sauce, hot pot, and cumin spiced lamb, this is not your average Chinese food. While they do offer some more American style Chinese food, it's done very well. The food is so flavorful- nothing boring here! It's great for a large group because the portions are large and served family style. There are tables with lazy susans that make sharing easy.
The service can be kind of odd in that food can come out somewhat slowly and at random. My friend who recommended this place says that it's because they want to bring it out hot & fresh when it's ready, not just wait until everything is done cooking. Waving down waiters and busers for whatever you need is totally normal and not rude, just a little different.
Overall, this place is fantastic!
We generally are impressed by the meals we have here, but last time the food was not very interesting and the service was exceedingly slow even though the waiters were standing around not doing much.
The best of our dishes was the Honey Walnut Prawns.
We love the West Lake Beef Soup and the Shanghai dumplings here.
When we arrived, and I tried to say we had a reservation, we were ignored. There were many empty tables but we had to wait more than 5 minutes. I told the young waiter, who was taking us finally to a table, that we had made a reservation through Open Table, he rudely said, we don’t take reservations! We sat down and waited for a waiter for more than 10 minutes to take our order. The restaurant was not crowded. There were only a couple other tables with people. The food that we ordered was salty and the noodle soup tasted like chemicals. We couldn’t eat much of the food. We said we were finished and again we waited 10 minutes to get our check... Never again! Really horrible, rude service!
Great find! Super busy but got us right in with reservation. Referred by a friend. Excellent service and beautiful presentation.
Food and service were excellent, but a little noisy. Interesting food selection and one of the best Chinese in Portland. Plan to visit again soon. Have been there 3-4 times in the last year.
Not sure it even deserves one star! If you've heard that this place is good, forget that notion. It used to be good. I ate here about a year ago and had a fabulous meal. Several months later I ordered a delivery meal through Postmates and when it arrived we seriously wondered if it really came from that restaurant. It was awful! We decided to give this place one more try and dine in. We ordered the beef hot pot which was 99% gristle 1% beef. It also had tofu rolls with the consistency of a latex glove. Disgusting! Our egg rolls and potato pancakes where over soaked in oil. I will say the rice was good but we left feeling like we ate a bowl of rice for dinner. The staff didn't apologize for the bad meal when we said we didn't like it, nor did they offer to bring us another option or even ask if we wanted to order something else. Three strikes you're out, we won't be back! Portland has lots of good food to offer, no need to settle for bad food and even worse customer service.
This was our second time eating here and we will be back again. Food takes me back to my time in China. Closest to the flavors we had in China.
The atmosphere was a little shabby and cold. The soup and the egg rolls were very good. The entrees were extremely salty. So much that it burned lips . I would never order an entree there again. However, the staff was very nice and like I said the soup and egg rolls were very good.
Our first visit to Szechuan chef and it was a pleasant one. We only ordered two dishes. They earn cashew chicken and fried rice ..the cashew chicken was good though it had an excessive amount of celery in it. The fried rice was the best we have found with the exception of Thai basil. For dessert we ordered sesamedumplins with red wine. It was good though they served enough for six people.
Great food! Great service and fast but they brought our entrees first. Then the appetizers and cocktails last? A little strange but it was all delicious. They have way too many lights in there or need a dimmer system. Too bright. Overall great food and great for a crowd. Fast service great prices!
Great food and service.
