Taking its name from the first Opera performed in
New Orleans in 1796 just blocks away from our address, Sylvain occupies a truly unique space at 625 Chartres Street adjacent to Jackson Square. This majestic building and location presents a feeling of history and palpable excitement to the city’s nightlife scene while celebrating that for which New Orleans has always been revered.
Our menu is purposefully designed to offer a mix of bistro classics elevated to the style of refined cuisine. From hand-rolled pastas to slow-braised, pork and game, to burgers ground daily by hand with the choicest cuts of meat, Sylvain’s menu, like the decor, feels at once familiar and brand new. Most importantly to us, though, is that guests will experience many of our Chef’s and Sous Chef’s fondest life experiences with food in the menu items and the daily features created for the guests’ enjoyment.

Sylvain Ratings and Reviews
We were fortunate to have nice warmer evening so that we could enjoy the courtyard. The veal sweetbreads & the beef cheeks were the highlight of the meal...the stuffed banana pepper was a bust (texture & flavor) but our server was very diligent to address. I also appreciated that the champagne & frites were available in a half portion, so that I could still indulge (even though my husband didn’t join in)!
The first visit I had with this restaurant was phenomenal. The waitress was great and even accommodated our separate checks which they normally do not do. I was so impressed by the service last time that I brought more coworkers to visit and unfortunately wasn't as impressed. The staff was not as friendly and made our ordering unpleasant as well as uncomfortable when we were checked out. Do be mindful they do not split checks.
We visit NOLA once a year and always make it a point to dine at Sylvain's at least one night. It never disappoints. The pork shoulder is true heaven. Beef Cheek is melt in your mouth incredible. They make an amazing Sazerac. Staff is always friendly. Great location in the Quarter.
My significant other and I have spent the last 12 New Years in New Orleans but only found Sylvain last year by accident. We have been waiting all year to go back. There is something very quaint and seductive about Sylvain. You have to walk through the alley to get into the door. The ambiance is warm and relaxing. The food is savory and the service is excellent. We tried a bottle of wine that our server recommended and we didn't love it so she got us a different bottle even though we weren't going to send it back. We love this restaurant. I hope we can make it a tradition to make it back every year.
The ambiance and food combined were worth the extra dollars you might pay for a restaurant in NOLA. Hidden Gem for sure! The waitress was on point with all her suggestions, even though they weren't part of our normal diet. HIGHLY Recommend biscuits with gravy and the steak! Although, all of our plates were delicious.
Our waitress was horrible. The food (cheese plate, gulf fish fritters, and beef cheeks) was mediocre at best. On the positive side, ambiance could not be better, and The French 75s and Moscow Mules were outstanding.
Unfortunately, this was the first disappointing meal I’ve ever eaten in NOLA.
We arrive about 10 minutes prior to our reservation time and checked in with the hostess. She informed us that the party occupying our table was currently finishing their desert, and our table would be ready in approximately 15 minutes . She suggested we have a drink while we waited. We headed into the adjacent bar. After about 20 minutes, my phone rang. It was the hostess asking if we were still coming, because it was past the time of our reservation and they were going to have to give our table to someone else if we weren’t, since they were running on schedule tonight!!! I probably would have forgiven the mixup and forgotten all about it if the meal had been good. But it wasn’t. I had what was supposed to be pork tenderloin. Instead, it was Shake ‘n Bake-style boneless pork chops with some sort of tasteless bean purée. If I had prepared that dish for my family’s dinner, I would have apologized in embarrassment. Earlier, on our way into the restaurant, we overheard a man remark to his companion, “Well, that was mediocre.” We should have cut our losses and left at that point! We won’t be back.
When we arrived we were greeted enthusiastically by a charming hostess. The ambiance and decor were great, but it was so dark we had to pick up the candle on the table and use it to read the menu. We were not greeted by our waitress or told the specials, or asked if we wanted cocktails. By the time our waitress came over she simply asked if we were ready to order. We noted that the waiter at the next table had greeted his table and told them the specials and brought them drinks ahead of ordering, as one would expect. We got the distinct impression that our overly pierced server simply found two 40 something yuppies not worthy of her time. But the food was excellent, although served a bit cold like someone forgot to bring it out when it was ready.
This place is hip and romantic, perfect for a date night. We arrived ahead of our reservation, and were promptly seated. The drinks and appetizer (cheese plate) were timed well. We had a bit of a wait in between our appetizer and our entrees. To be fair, they did seem to get an influx of patrons and the manager did inform us at some point that they were backed up. We weren’t in a rush, but we’re getting hangry. The manager was nice enough to comp a round of drinks (without asking). The food was well worth the wait. My boyfriend cleared his plate (beef checks) and I would have eaten all of mine (chick-syl-vain sandwich) if I could have fit any more in my stomach. Their homemade hot sauce is amazing, very hot and amazing. Highly recommend.
Family ate here twice on a recent visit to New Orleans. Beautiful, courtyard space in the French Quarter. Reasonable prices for what you get. Pork shoulder the overwhelming favorite among the five of us. Fish also very good. Pappardelle a tad on the watery side but tasted great. Appetizers: daily crudo, soup, antipasti tray, brussels sprouts salad...all great. Beet and tomato salad so-so. Cocktails varied and delicious. Good beer options. Tried the pot de creme and lemon pound cake desserts. Very tasty. No complaints here at all. Service attentive, helpful, friendly and efficient.
We were visiting NOLA and this place was recommended by a foodie. The food was great and the atmosphere cool.....but....our server was not good. She was very inattentive and just didn’t seem to care. For example when she first came over to our table she didn’t really greet us but just started out by asking if we wanted a drink. She never explained the menu, didn’t ask my husband if he wanted another glass of wine when I ordered a second and then when we asked for dessert menu, she brought the check. Also, the music selection for the spot was very weird; heavy rock at times for an intimate space, and way too loud. But, food was excellent and all other staff very nice!
My wife and I were in town for a few days. We travel a lot and always look for places that exude quality and character. This place did not disappoint! Beautiful old building right off of Jackson Square with fantastic ambiance. We each had cocktails before dinner and wine with dinner. The food was top notch, and we wished we had more time to go back and try something else off the menu. I was also very pleasantly surprised to see an extensive Amaro list, which I took full advantage of after dinner. We would absolutely eat here again and have already recommended it to our friends and family.
My boyfriend and I decided to try Sylvain for our 2 year anniversary and we were not disappointed at all. Upon being seated, we were kindly greeted by our server with conplementary champagne. Service throughout our dinner was perfect, not too much and not too little. The pan fried pork shoulder was delicious! We will certainly be back!
