Sylvain opened its doors in late 2010 in one of the world’s most celebrated and vibrant neighborhoods. The restaurant & bar's design embraces the city's storied past while serving up elegant gastropub fare, ultimately providing an oasis of unmatched quality and style. Whether dining off Executive Chef Martha Wiggins' contemporary American menus or enjoying a wine program and cocktail menu inspired by the classics with a nod to the resurgence of cocktail culture, guests will savor the restaurant's unspoiled rawness and modern luxury.
Our restaurant is located within a historic 18th-century carriage house and our patio and courtyard only add to the timeless feel of the space, creating a truly unique & authentic New Orleans experience. By restoring the historic doors, ceilings, and balconies to their original glory and adding elegant seating, lighting and artwork, Sylvain feels at once historic and thoroughly modern — all done with a nod to the comedic opera that bears its name.

Sylvain Ratings and Reviews
Our second visit here. This place is an absolute gem. Had the Southern Antipasti board, beet and tomato salad and the fish fritters to start. Followed by the Chick “Syl-Vain” sandwich and the Louisiana shrimp and clams with Limas, Brussels and couscous. If my only complaint was that the fries were too salty, I’d say they knocked it right out of the park, again. Cocktails were excellent. Bourbon milk punch ice cream sandwich was delicious but pretty tough and slightly awkward to eat. We will be back again soon!
What a treat! The industrial chic decor was just special enough, not overly swanky. A perfect ambience is created with low lighting and dark hues. My champagne cocktail was expertly crafted with hints of lavender and lemon aromatics. Lamb stew appetizer was hearty and savory. The braised skirt steak dinner was amazing with hints of Mediterranean flair. Sylvain provides complete satisfaction!
Cute place. The food was great. I ate the parpadelle Bolognese. The pasta was fresh and delicious and the meat was very soft and tasty. We also had the artisan cheese plate which was equally appetizing. My kids had the burger and the chicken sandwich. Both were excellent. And my husband liked the pork shoulder, although he did say it was a little bit dry.
Waited 25 minutes after showing on time for a reservation. Food wasn’t my thing but I guess I’m spoiled. Guess I just expected more based on what I’d heard. Music was very loud and obnoxious. Based on reviews I thought it would be much better. Ordered a beer and received the wrong one. Correct on my receipt which really didn’t make sense. Should have gone to Doris across the street.
Went here on a Friday night with my wife. Loved it. Dark and very New Orleans, both are good for me. Bourbon Milk Punch Ice Cream Sandwich for dessert was awesome. Service was very good. My only complaint is background music did not need to be quite so loud.
We loved the restaurant for quality and creativity of cuisine and for the dimly lit ambiance but the level of music and type of music was not conducive to conversation or a relaxed meal. So, I have mixed feelings. I recommend it but wouldn’t return because of the noise. The setting is so romantic, it is a shame that it wasn’t jazz.
Amazing experience at this place. It was a bit busy after the Saints game so when there is an event in town ita best to make reservations. The wait staff was very helpful with menu suggestions, and very knowledgeable about the extensive wine list. The food was absolutely delicious, and the cocktails were superb.
Sylvain is one of my favorite restaurants in New Orleans. The atmosphere is romantic enough for dates (low lights and those old school Quarter vibes) and yet vibrant enough for meeting up with friends. The staff is super accommodating and knowledgable about the menu, and the gastropub food is consistently fabulous. Really nice combination of ingredients. ORDER THE BEEF CHEEKS. You can also dine or hang out the that sweet courtyard in the back. I would even dine there alone but there's always someone around who'd like to eat at Sylvain's too. Don't forget to ORDER THE BEEF CHEEKS.
Sylvain is a New Orleans classic that continues to be one of my favorites. I had the short rib hash on this visit and it was a great savory dish after a fun New Orleans evening.
I really like the ambiance of Sylvain with it’s old New Orleans feel tucked away on Charters Street.
We loved everything about Sylvain! The hostess and waitstaff were friendly, knowledgable, and quick. We got great recommendations about both beer/cocktail selections and the food. The vibe was very cool. Loved the decor. Felt warm but stylish, and even the playlist they had on in the background was great. Location was easy to get to. We had a reservation for 12:30 brunch and were sat at a great table almost immediately. All this doesn't compare to the food itself, which was fantastic. Fresh, well seasoned, great presentation, interesting flavor combos, correct temperatures (hot food hot, cold food cold), and just overall delicious. We had shaved Brussels sprouts appetizer, fish of the day special, and Chick Sylvain sandwich. We were in NOLA for a long weekend and this was my favorite restaurant of the trip. We'll be back.
Wherever I went in New Orleans, the locals would quiz me on where we’re having our meals. As first timers to the city, I leaned heavily on what I found online. Yes, my wife and I dined at some of the other establishment places that always seem to come up when one talks about restaurants in New Orleans, and the locals would let me know exactly what they thought about my choices....which were not always complimentary. However, whenever I mentioned Sylvain, the locals would nod their heads and say that’s a good one.
With that as a backdrop, my expectations were very high for our dinner tonight. Happily, with just a few quibbles, I can also second what the locals have said, that was a good one.
Those quibbles? The biggest was the lighting...or lack of any meaningful light. Two small candles were the main means of lighting for our table. There were dishes that I literally had to use my phone as illumination in order for me to tell what I was putting in my mouth. We were joined by two other friends, and there was some miscommunication between the waitress and the runners when they brought out the dishes. What the waitress said was monkfish became swordfish when the fish arrived...only to be announced as monkfish again.
Seated out on the patio, the noise level was quite low.
The food....fantastic! We ordered everything from the daily special salad, carrot/pumpkin soup with coconut milk, monkfish over polenta, shrimp/clams over couscous, antipasti, fish fritters and crudo. Not a dud in the bunch!
The restaurant was just a short entertaining walk from our hotel on Canal. I wish I can go back before we leave, but this place is popular! Next time Sylvain. Next time.
Sylvian was recommended to us by a colleague who knows NOLA well and they weren’t wrong.
The food was delicious and not too huge for us Brits.
It was just the ambiance we were looking for as a respite from the stuffier looking restaurants and Bourbon Street noise.
I would definitely recommend Sylvain to anyone visiting the city.
Amazing food and unique cocktails! This is why I came to NOLA!!! I had the LA shrimp and clams with chick peas couscous and greens. So fresh, full of savory spice-exactly what you want from Southern, New Orleans fare. Great gastropub vibe definitely can’t wait to go back!
We visited Sylvain on a recommendation of a friend that had recently been to NOLA. Its a quirky little place with a cool vibe. Service was awesome and food was top notch - everyone in our party cleaned their plates. I had the shrimp and clams and requested all shrimp/no clams and they accommodated me perfectly - the dish was fantastic. I'd definitely recommend!
