Swagat Indian Restaurant at Amsterdam Avenue and 80th Street in New York was a pleasant discovery. The simple storefront restaurant had long series of tables against both walls that could accommodate small and large parties.
I started with a large quenching bottle of Taj Mahal Beer served with Chapatti, raita and chutney. It was followed by a warm bowl of Mulgutwanni soup made with a mild mix of traditional lentils and herbs.
The Lamb Chettinad (boneless cubes of lamb cooked with onion, mustard, coconut, black pepper, tamarind sauce and curry leaves) was a delicious blend of succulent meat and diverse spices. It was well complemented with Peshawri Naan stuffed with almonds, raisins, cashews and cranberries that was a delicious bread full of healthy ingredients.
Dinner was filling and the food was reasonably priced.
Delicious! Highly recommending and we will go back
Some of the BEST Indian Cuisine I’ve ever had! The service is always great and the staff is always friendly and attentive. Stop by for lunch if your in the neighborhood-great lunch prices.
Very average Indian food. Nothing special and actually quite a disappointment. I'm sure there are much better Indian restaurants in this part of NYC. Find them.
Great tasting Indian food. My only complaint is the small portions on appetizers. A couple bucks cheaper would be a bit more appropriate. Would definitely come back again for entrées.
Nice neighborhood eatery that has never disappointed.
I dine here frequently and it never disappoints. Food is delicious and service could not be more friendly.
really tasty and fresh indian food. it's becoming one of my favorite indian places. there's nothing bad about it.
Great friendly place with good basic Indian food
Swagat is a low-key, intimate, quiet little restaurant. My only complaint is the service tends to be a little disorganized (and for delivery, sometimes it's quite a wait). But the staff is friendly, and most important, the food is just delicious! Try the Chana Saag, the Chicken Tikka Masala, or the Kaju Cauliflower. It is my go-to place for Indian food on the Upper West Side, every time!
My family and I love Swagat. We've been coming for the past six years. We absolutely love the food, the quality is always at it's best. The place is small but cozy and the service is impecable.
We were planning for 8 of us. All coming from different locations. Hoboken, North NJ, and CT.
This restaurant was a great location to access and street parking pretty easy.
We read previous reviews and were quite happy with everything. Our table was ready exactly when we arrived. The atmosphere was warm and the staff was caring and accommodating.
The cauliflower appetizer for the table was outstanding. We all ordered various items and all were very good. The helpings were generous and the pricing was great.
We would definitely return.
Great, authentic Indian meal. Good service. The restaurant was very quaint and quiet.
Neighborhood gem. Great Indian food and friendly service.
I gave this the highest rating because over the years it has been consistently wonderful. It is not glitzy, just a lovely ambiance.
Made a reservation for 5. I got there early and the staff was lovely but as it got busier and my friends joined, the service went down. We were squeezed in. Then the server dropped a utensil and it went on my friends jacket. There wasn’t an apology or try to clean/wipe it. Thankfully the food was tasty.
Great spot, small but comfortable dining area, attentive service and great food for great value. Will be back.
Superb food in a very nice and relaxed atmosphere.
Delicious Indian food in a friendly neighborhood spot.
Solid food and cozy atmosphere. It took 40 minutes for our food to arrive, but otherwise a lovely experience. I would certainly go back.
They took forever to get us the check but the meal was amazing!
Had a lovely dinner here on a Friday night to catch up with an old friend. Service and food were really good; amazing values for what we paid. I will definitely be back.
A great new Indian find. Food was very good. Service was fine. Not too noisy.
The food was delicious and authentic, the entire staff was very pleasant and attentive, and we can't wait to go back again
The food was terrific and the servers didn't rush us out even when it got busy. The table for two was a little small for all the dishes, and it took some juggling to make it work. Otherwise it was all great.
A great surprise that this little "hole in the wall" turned out to be one of the best Indian restaurants I've been to in years! Small, "intimate," colorful... but if some find it too much so, the food and service make up for it! Everything was fresh, aromatic and just plain delicious.
I've had only bad experiences with Indian restaurants, until tonight. Swagat was recommended to me by a good friend that emphasized how quaint and amazing the restaurant was. I can say with complete and total honesty, that it was incredible! The place was very clean, with several waiters/servers attending each table. The flavors of the food were fantastic, and I can't wait to go again. I highly recommend it.
Service is really good
Quality if food has gone down a lot
After their closure for a gas leak they raised prices and quality went down
THEY NEED TO FIX THIS
Swagat has delicious tandoori as well as distinctive tasty sauces for each dish. And very good value.
I eat at this restaurant every time I am in New York City. The food is delicious. The restaurant is small so I would recommend a reservation. In my view they have the best garlic naan that I have ever had. Can't wait to go again.
My husband and I have three small children (6, 4 & 2 yrs old) and we rarely get a sitter, when we do, we want to enjoy ourselves. We definitely did just that at Swagat! We sat at a small table for two and when the person sitting next to us left, our server kindly joined tables so we could spread out more. Our server was extremely attentive, considerate and helpful. We ordered beef samosas, curry shrimp and a chicken dish - all divinely delicious!! We had an unforgettable experience and we will be back the next time we are in NY (and we get a sitter!)
Great food and service one of my favorite spots to go when in the city.
Service was a little touchy, but the food was amazing. Owners seemed like very nice people. The food tasted excellent and it's a quiet atmosphere.
They're back! After closing for a gas leak for a couple of months, this longtime UWS Indian stalwart is back in business, and the food is if anything better than before.
Really great food at reasonable prices and really nice people work there and run the place
Swagat has been consistent in its food preparation. Everything seems fresh and the staff will accommodate special requests and modifications.
Nevertheless, the service was not up to par on this most recent visit. Our waitress seemed confused, she mumbled, and she was nowhere to be found when we needed her.
Always a pleasure to dine at Swagat. A courteous staff serving dishes that favor consistent quality and taste_to the delight of all my friends and associates that I shared tables with.
Service was attentive and gracious. Chicken Tikka Masala was good as we're the Vegetable Samosas.
Sadly the restaurant is closed right now due to a building leak. We've always enjoyed this restaurant so we hope it comes back soon
