Sutro's at the Cliff House - San Francisco

Come for the sunset at the bar, skip the food. My meal was so bland that I had to add table salt. The lamb came with a green tower of potatoes, which was just a mess.
I brought friends from England here and could not have been happier with the service, food and overall experience! It was a beautiful day in SF! I had asked for a table by the window and got there early to hope to insure that....but, no tables were available by the window and as I was getting seated, one opened up and they let me move into the most perfect spot! Everything was wonderful! Thank you for helping in making our day so wonderful!
Great food great service great viwe
It’s one of my favorite SF spots - get in early to watch the sunset, grab drinks and watch the ocean. Listen to live music. Seafood is great for dinner. It remains classy and unique through the decades
This is a great restaurant with great food; however, it is in a high crime area and several cars are broken into every evening (they look for rental cars). If you go, use Uber or a taxi!
If was a beautiful place to visit and the food and service was impeccable!!
Beautiful window seat table with view of the ocean, surfers and Sutro baths. Food and drink selection was great. We ordered Seafood Bouillabaisse in Thai sauce, it was excellent! For dessert we had Creme Brûlée with berries. Service was excellent. Highly recommend.
In San Francisco for the week visiting friends. My wife and I made reservations at the Cliff House to have a small celebration for our friends birthday. We started out with drinks at the bistro and then had dinner in the restaurant. We arrived a half hour early for our dinner reservations so we could have drinks at the bar. Unfortunately, we waited 20 minutes to see a bartender and had to rush our drinks. Dinner we where pleasantly surprised by the half off bottles of wine on Tuesday nights. We where going to order a bottle regardless. The waiter and support staff did a great job with prompt attention and very courteous. Unfortunately, the waiter never got our request for a small celebration, usually a small piece of chocolate saying happy birthday. We expect anything to acknowledge our friends birthday. Not so much here, somewhat disappointed. We’ll be back to just chill and normal dinner but would not recommend for any special occasion.
Everything went amazing! I proposed to my girlfriend and she said yes!
Beautiful day, great food, service and view!!
Always worth the drive.
Only if you like seafood. There were no other options on the menu for folks that dont like seafood, besides a 16 oz. Steak. I would recommend that add a chicken dish or other dishes for non seafood lovers
The ability to watch the ocean combined with great food and excellent service was a one of a kind experience everyone should try!
It was a super nice experience. Pricey as usual with everything in San Francisco, but we had a very good time for my wife birthday. I recommend for special occasions.
Beautiful view, uncomfortable temperature in dining room. Waitress came to the table the absolute minimum number of times it would take to accept orders (not even to deliver the food, much less to accommodate any kind of need). Food and cocktails were fine and well prepared, but surly server doesn’t justify price or trouble of deposit required reservation.
Too hot in the dining room.
The setting is stunning and the food is very good. The prices are high and the quality of the food probably justifies the price, but if you are going to charge those prices you expect great service and the service was not up to it, so I left feeling I’d had an expensive meal rather than a great experience.
We enjoyed our time dining in the Sutro. The atmosphere was light and pleasant. The food was delicious and our server was kind and prompt with her service. Thank you for a table near the window over looking the water. The view was beautiful. Thank you for surprising my granddaughter with the Birthday dish. We all had a lovely time.
The food was fabulous though very rich. The lamb was generous in portions. The bacon on the salmon was too rich for my taste. A mistake was made in our order but it was rectified immediately.
Pricey, but a perfect place to be guaranteed a lovely, civilized meal with a view.
Fantastic food, service and view. Great for tourists and San Franciscans alike. Love it there. Food is beautifully presented and generously portioned too.
Great atmosphere but lack options for vegetarians.
They struggle to manage parties >4. We waited over an hour for a table (party of 5) despite a reservation.
Great food, excellent service, nice view of the ocean
Very poor service. Was there 20 minutes longer than desired. Had to ask a table buser to tell waitress I wanted bill. Extremely small portions.
We were lucky enough to witness a marvelous sunset while having dinner. Wonderful views looking out the window over the Pacific Ocean. The food was excellent. Great dining experience. Thank you!
But dońt ask for special seating,as they always ignore
Great food, great service, we are already looking forward to going back.
Friends were visiting from the East coast and were pleasantly surprised with the great views, food and service.
Good food and beautiful view
Tries to be something it is not - a high end restaurant. Service was slow and unremarkable in working our table. You'd expect better service with the price point of their menu. The view is great, but you don't need to eat at the Cliffhouse to appreciate it. Food was ok, again, unremarkable.
The food was fine, way over priced - the cheapest glass of wine is $17.00 - and the host who was bringing us to
The table was breathing heavy when we mentioned that we would
Prefer sit at another table - not in sunshine.
Awe found her rude.
This is my go to place for guests. It is not inexpensive. However, the prices have gone up since I was last there.
My previous visits I was a walk-in at just ahead of the lunch schedule and got a fabulous table right at the glass. This time I made a reservation for 12:30. I was seated in the downstairs room close to an exit door that was proper open for air. I was told I would have to wait a long time to have a window seat.
It worked out ok for my guests but I was unhappy about seating and the comment.
Sutro’s was the highlight of our first visit to San Francisco. The food and service was excellent, though we didn’t get a window table to fully appreciate the sunset over the Pacific. My wife and I had a wonderful time.
Place is beginning to get a bit out dated. The carpet and chairs are looking old and the paint color could be more modern to give the place nice pick up to bring everything together with the gorgeous view. The food and service was great. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu. Its on the pricey side but worth it for a special occasion.
I had a business meeting over lunch and the server was quite understanding that we were not in a rush and gave us just the right amount of time to discuss things that we needed to discuss but not 'crowd' us.
Our drive there was unusually long. The view of the ocean is always spectacular. Food was pretty good and the service was very good. A bit pricey but expected for a tourist spot. Too bad traveling to the City from the East Bay is so dreadful.
Only for a special occasion, it is a bit pricey for the food and service.
Great food and wonderful view!
Hostess was not a good first impression. I made reservation a week or more ago and requested an ocean view table; we were celebrating our 15th anniversary. She said she didn’t have a ocean view table and then escorted us to our table past a table by the window with a spectacular view. I insisted on the table we passed and she gave it to us. Great table and made our dinner special. Cliff House dining is all about the ocean view in my opinion. Food is good but not outstanding. No wow factor. Michael our server was good although it take some time for him to engage us.
