   Truly outstanding sushi with types of fish you don’t typically see, well balanced, creative seasoning and a carefully thought out set of courses. The appetizers were also impeccably prepared. Highlights were the salmon in kimchi sauce, shiso wrapped shrim tempura, sea bream, and the chu toro with uni. Wonderful place for a date night or special occasion. We’ll be back to try the regular menu!

   We had a wonderful experience dining at Sushi Yugen Omakase. The food was beautifully prepared and served elegantly. We ordered the chef prepared dinners and were surprised and delighted at each turn with the creative, delicious combinations including a gorgeous piece of sushi with caviar and gold leaf. The chef and wait staff couldn't have been nicer and offered informative, detailed explanations whenever we inquired. It was my partner's birthday and the restaurant staff made the evening a special and memorable one.

   Came here for the 30th birthday and had the finest meal I’d experienced in over a decade. The staff was courteous and attentive without being overbearing, while the courses came out quickly and efficiently. Each one was explained in detail to the point where the server literally showed a photo of the fish used, via iPad, in order to facilitate a clear understanding of what we were eating. My date and I both chose the Grand Omakase and were thrilled with the quality and taste. Couldn’t have chosen a better birthday spot, and this place stands out even compared to a Momofuku experience.    Grand Tasting at the bar was excellent and a good value for the meal quality, restaurant ambiance, and service. Pieces were high quality, many (if not all - not sure) from Japan with an excellent balance of tradition and creativity (I like both, not too much in either direction). Service for this solo diner was friendly and more informative and inquisitive than average in my experience with omakase in Manhattan. The one improvement I'd like to is a longer sake list - definitely smaller than average. Recommended!

   I and my girlfriend have dined at scores of omakase restaurants over the last few years. Generally, from one visit to the next, the menu is almost always the same. There may be 1 or 2 new items on a second or third visit but usually there is little variation. A welcome exception to this is Sushi Yugen at 1st Avenue & 63rd Street in the Upper East Side. We have now had omakase there twice and it was delicious but completely different for each visit. They truly change the menu to feature seasonal seafood. The food quality is exceptional. There's unobtrusive but skilled attention to detail and customer service. Chef Tony is a master of his craft and you must sit at the counter to watch him in action. Manager Yudi is a superb professional and makes you feel like family. During the omakase experience he does something which my girlfriend and I have not seen at any other omakase restaurant we have dined at. I won't describe it here but you'll know it when you see it. There is a fine drinks selection as well as off menu mocktails which mixologist Gina crafts to perfection. I strongly recommend Sushi Yugen for a next level omakase experience.

   Dining at Sushi Yugen is an exceptional experience. Seated at the bar allowed us to engage with the master chef and greatly enhanced our appreciation of each of the courses. Each of the sushi items was explained, often with photos of the fish and the ingredients used. The waiters are very attentive and our green tea was replenished even before we had to ask. The surprise at the conclusion was a birthday cake with a candle that was a delightful coda to a memorable dinner.

    It was one of the best Omakase experiences of my life! Not only was each piece fresh and delicious, a picture of each fish was shown to everyone as the pieces were being delivered to the table. The staff is very friendly and accommodating and in terms of quality and value, the 16 piece Omakase dinner for $160 was well worth it.

    Little gem and simply the best Omakase. Their attention to detail is amazing. Here is an example. My son went out to grab a quick phone call and they stop the next round until he came back. They also realized me and my daughter picks up the sushi with our left hand so they made sure the sushi was presented to be easily picked up with our left hand. These are just couple small examples of their service. This is my second time there and for any restaurant to have the same high level of standards for food and service is rare these days.

    The sushi was fantastic - fresh, creative and well presented. Everyone was warm and friendly and helpful in explaining the dishes. The service was excellent and very attentive. I have been to Japan many times and my wife and I love sushi. This was on of the best sushi Omakase meals that we have ever had. A very special place.

    My husband treated me to the Grand Tasting for my birthday and it did not disappoint. Honestly, every bite was perfection. The cohesion of prep, service and description of each bite was without fail. Professional in every way and one of the best omakase experiences I have had. I think Sushi Yugen is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood, but also worth traveling to.

    Gorgeous restaurant, incredibly high quality sushi and attention to detail on the fish selection and quality. Service was impeccable. The restaurant was quiet and I hope more people give the restaurant a try, it is top tier omakase quality at $160 is reasonably priced. If I had to be critical it would be that the drinks menu was fairly limited. That being said I will be back and is a must go for those who like to be in the know on the best omakase bars.

    Our first time dining at Sushi Yugen. We sat at the sushi bar and had the Omakase, grand tasting $160/p.p. Wow, what a phenomenal experience! Dining here will save you airfare as it is reminiscent of Omakase dining in Tokyo. Freshest fish from Japan that due to the cut and preparation, literally melt in your mouth. Phenomenal selections included uni topped Kumamoto oyster, Chu toro which was the most succulent I have ever tasted, loved the o-toro topped with beluga caviar, and seasonal items are incorporated such as soft shell crab lightly and perfectly tempura. Absolutely highly recommend!!! Wonderful new addition to the UES!!!

    Excellent sushi and omakase, much needed in our neighborhood! We had the Grand Omakase of 5 appetizers, 10 fish and 1 dessert. The madai and kinmadai were some of the best omakase we have eaten. All the other sushi pieces served were very good, too, although there was not as much variation in omakase preparation for each fish as we have experienced in other high-end omakase restaurants. I did not love the first three appetizers: oyster with uni was a little fishy, monkfish liver pate was a little bland, and king salmon with salmon roe had a Southwestern spice that I felt detracted from the fish. But these were small exceptions to a very good meal. We spoke with other diners at the sushi counter who also loved their meals. The tempura looked incredible. The service was excellent and the ambiance is clean, spacious, and amazing. We will definitely come back, but will likely order ala carte next time.
