   It was busy right at opening so get a reservation! Ask for the specials. We had Amber Jack hamachi And a sashimi special and sushi rice. Both were delicious and good size for sharing. Service and ambience good.

   Excellent sushi at a very reasonable price. Menu caters to sashimi lovers as well as pedestrian tastes, such a teriyaki and California rolls. Something for everyone at a place that won’t break the bank.

    One needs to explore Kailua-Kona restaurants not located along the ocean. Most of these offer decent food and magnificent views especially at sunset. Some may depend too much on their location and don’t pay enough attention to the food. So do keep in mind there are charming restaurants offering interesting dining experiences without the scenery. Sushi Shiono is one such place. The sushi and rolls on offer are well prepared but there is some creativity to keep it interesting. For example the simple salmon skin roll has been transformed into a more substantial experience with the addition of sprouts and bonito shavings. The agedashi tofu uses a firmer tofu than used in eastern US with the dashi almost forming a cheese-like dense layer. The sushi was well prepared with a very good unagi. The experiment with a seared ahi with a garlic paste was interesting but the garlic was too much for sushi. The Kitsune Udon was a nice vegetarian choice but the broth was not rich enough. Service was uneven due to too few waiters for a Saturday night and a couple of larger groups.

    The sushi was as fresh as can be, and larger rolls than many other places in town or in the area. I also had the furikake chicken, which was good, but not as good as several other times I’ve had this dish there. Maybe since it was the end of the week, the oil needed changing or something like that. But overall a good dinner, not too expensive, and local for a place after work.

    Great food & friendly service! Parking can be a challenge around dinner time, so give yourself plenty of time. We arrive early for our 7 pm reservation, so we sat at the bar. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience!

    We’ve been to Sushi Shiono twice and both times it was an enjoyable experience. First off we ordered the chicken furikake and it was super yummy! I ordered the sushi combination and it was very fresh. My husband ordered the steak plate and it was delicious by his standards. What I like best is both of our entrees included miso soup and salad. We were stuffed afterwards and declined on dessert.

    It was our first time coming to this restaurant despite walking by many times. We tried several appetizers and opted for the boat deluxe - which had a bit of everything - tempura, volcano roll, perfectly cooked rib eye plus more!Every bite was delicious & a must try! Service was wonderful - our waitress was attentive and very polite. Restaurant setting was quiet, even with a few people seated nearby - we had set reservations right as they opened. Perfect place to celebrate our anniversary!

    We’re from Denver and there are several good sushi places there. We expected excellent sushi here in HI - however, we were very disappointed. The sushi quality was very subpar. Really, it wasn’t worth eating. The waitress was being worked to death. There was very little help. Would never go there again.

    Good sushi. None of the rolls were over-the-top spectacular, but well made and pleasing to the eye. No doubt the fish was as fresh as possible. Great sake selection with different size options. I would go again.

    Sushi Shiono and it’s sister restaurant Shiono Izakaya are our go to restaurants on Hawaii island for outstanding sushi, sashimi, noodles, tempura and much more. Also one of the best sake lists!

    Best sushi in Kona if not on the entire coast. Hands down comparable to the big hotels for way less $$. Service friendly and attentive. It’s always busy when they first open (people line up prior to 530) so make sure you secure a reservation. Try the Hawaiian volcano roll!

    Not a Sushi person, I even needed a fork. The food was outstanding. My salad was delicious, soup was good but the teriyaki chicken was out of this world. Service was wonderful and efficient. We were a large group with children and server was a real pro! She was cheerful, accurate and working other tables too. Highly recommend.

    My wife and I Went there as they opened for dinner, at 530. Was seated right away. Ordered their Mauna kea roll, lobster tempura, miso butterfish, house salad, and various Nigiri. Very good stuff, especially considering the price. Moving forward, I plan to go here every time we visit Kona.

    This restaurant came highly recommended while visiting the Big Island. Very short staffed. Very hectic. We started with pickled vegetables and miso soup. Both were very good. Then our sashimi came and the orders were very small. The fish was good, not great. As the prices for what you get are not inexpensive, we did not order any more. We left hungry.     Kona is like a tropical Las Vegas or a Monday night on Bourbon Street. THIS is the top rated sushi place in Kona? What an embarrassment. The sushi was mediocre at best with too-mushy rice and meager portions. The horrible fried fare (chicken furikake - that the server recommended-& fried ahi steak) on the other hand was awful AND plentiful. At first, I thought that the katsu sauce could save the ahi tuna steak but sadly it was just a thick glop of salt. The chicken furikake was covered in a goopy sauce that somehow congealed the fried coating on the chicken. There is NO ambiance as the window-facing ‘view’ allows for a sneak peek at a gorgeous Japanese paper lantern… That has been covered in plastic and is so filthy and bug covered it is in itself nauseating. People watching is depressing as it is a belly out vibe…and not the good kind. Inside it’s dark and dingy with no attention to aesthetics.

    The spicy mongoose roll and the Hawaiian volcano roll were outstanding. Must get! The Godzilla roll was very good as well. Not a fancy restaurant, but good food and service. Rolls came out very quickly.
