Excellent sushi and creative sushi chef Minao!
Fresh and authentic sushi dishes at very reasonable prices. Service was very friendly and attentive. My first time at the restaurant - will definitely return.
Casual chic spot with high quality sushi!
In my opinion, this place his a hidden gem. I've been to many sushi restaurants, and this place is one of the best sushi restaurants in San Fernando Valley. My recommendation would be to try the Omakase (chef's choice) from the menu. There are no rainbow rolls, Vegas rolls, caterpillar rolls, etc. This place only offers very high quality, traditional Japanese sushi for the most reasonable price. Other restaurants in the area charge up to 2 to 3 times higher, with less amount of food. Great quality, reasonably priced, excellent service!
I booked this restaurant to celebrate my anniversary. The menu was limited which was okay with me but I was only able to get a few sushi because they didn’t have about half of them. It was kind of disappointing.
Great food with amazing service. Outside dining on a cute sidewalk made it great!
The outdoor seating is along the sidewalk. The menu is limited at the moment.
Fresh fresh tasting sushi— excellent service and great tasting food. Other than having to eat outside due to Covid it was excellent experience for a local eatery. Will return
Sushi Sazanami has definitely made use of the time off. Chef Mineo’s omakase offering was not only better than before the shut down due to the pandemic, I was shocked at the bill... it was much lower than expected for the quality! I will be back soon!
Delicious sushi and Sazanami even has freshly grated wasabi! You have to ask for it.
Have you ever heard of Kazunoko kombu? They have it! It is my favorite! If you like caviar, order the kazunoko kombu! Yes, it’s tiny fish eggs!
Looking for all those crazy names rolls?!?! Don’t go here! They don’t serve those! This is a traditional Japanese sushi restaurant that serves nigiri sushi.
Practically all of these sushi bars that serve the high quality fresh fish usually costs $200-$300 per person for omakase.
You will be shocked at your bill after your omakase meal at Sazanami.
A huge smile will appear as you realize the bill is LESS THAN $100 per person!
Sazanami has been open a couple of years and is off the beaten path of the usual sushi bars on Ventura Blvd. Those restaurants have super high leases and need to charge more.
Sazanami passes the savings to their customers! Don’t believe me? You be the judge! Try it.... you’ll like it!
Fantastic find in the valley! Great menu focusing on the fish, and not on bizarre fried combo rolls. Friendly staff, great happy hour prices, and you can sit and talk in normal conversational tones - no shouting over loud music. I can't wait for my next visit!
While I have been here a few times before, this visit was with my family, which meant no sushi bar seating. I loved the different view of the restaurant, but felt that not being seated at the bar, meant lower sushi service. While previous visits, I was always seated at the bar for omakase, the food and service was phenomenal. This visit being with a toddler, I felt a table was in order. But simple sushi requests were not accommodated, even though the restaurant was not even a third full. And for others looking for a "kid-friendly" sushi restaurant, this may not be the place for you. While highchairs are available, the kid-friendly menu options are extremely limited, to non-existent. Food was delicious, as always. Table service was impeccable and personable. I know now, that for future visits will be adults-only and to be seated at the bar. While I was very surprised at how spacious and clean the bathroom was, be aware, that it is a one-room restroom.
We ordered a lot of sushi. Fish was fresh in general but I’ve had better uni somewhere else. Rice can definitely be improved. I gave the food 3/5 mainly because of the rice.
Food and service were excellent! Will definitely recommend this restaurant!
I hate having to write this review because I feel horrible for our server, who tried his best. But our family dinner last Saturday evening was an absolute disaster. It was so bad that at one point I thought everyone in the restaurant (about 8 tables) was going to revolt. Seriously.
First, there was only one server -- and he wasn't even supposed to be a server; he is a cook helping the front of the house because the server called in sick and their backup didn't show up. (One has to wonder why only one server was scheduled for Saturday night service in the first place...)
Making matters worse, the lone server also had to serve as his own host, bartender, and busser. In other words, he had to do *everything* in the restaurant except prepare the sushi and cook the warm dishes. Needless to say, he was *completely* overwhelmed. Yet neither the sushi chef nor the kitchen cook raised a single finger to help him. I made a point of watching the chef. He was either too aloof to notice what the server was dealing with or he didn't care.
Whichever it is, it is cause for concern. This restaurant clearly suffers from severe mismanagement.
But we haven't even gotten to the food yet -- which itself was far below average and certainly not worth the premium price. Spicy tuna rolls were sloppy. Spicy tuna on crispy rice was fine but it took 30 mins to cook despite (being one of the few dishes the cook was responsible for). The bacon wrapped asparagus took even longer, and the bacon was under cooked. The sashimi slices were too thick . The shishito peppers weren't seasoned. And the "spicy" edamame were inedible pods soaked in Sriracha (which doesn't sound horrible until you really think about it -- to get the edamame out of the pod, you basically have to lick all the sauce off the pods).
I had such high hopes for this place, thinking we had discovered a new sushi joint to add to our primary repertoire of Kiwami, Teru, and Iroha. Sadly, we definitely did not.
It was closed and we were very disappointed that we were not told. By you and them. 😡
This place is incredible! Service, quality, it has it all! And much needed in the area ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Amazing fish, exceptional service!
This restaurant looks like closed permanently. I do not know why OpenTable accept this reservation. We wasted time.
My family is from Japan, so I am very, very picky when it comes to Japanese restaurants. These days, it is very difficult to find a very good, reasonably priced, & authentic Japanese restaurant. Sushi Sazanami possesses all of these qualities, so I will enthusiastically recommend it to all my friends! My only critique would be that the octopus balls were a bit under cooked. Other than that, the food was excellent!
The fish quality was good but with both of the orders of sashimi, the fish was slightly frozen, which was unpleasant.
Chef Haga always out does himself! Fresh, delectable, n creative. Never a boring meal and service is quaint, friendly, n not intrusive. Inside out egg. Truffle red snapper sashimi. Crab tamago hand roll r my faves.
It is a newer place and a pleasant surprise. The sushi chef can go toe to toe with any on Ventura. Fresh seafood. Solid selection of fish. Fresh water eel is a speciality. The chef 's skill make the most difference. Attentive and friendly service. Will definitely go back again.
I took my friend for his birthday. The service was great they even sang for him! The only problem I had was the menu it was way too little more different types of sushi would be good considering it’s a sushi restaurant. Other than that everything was perfect!
Best authentic Japanese omakase at a reasonable price. Highly recommended.
Really love this spot. We came in towards the end of the night but never felt rushed, we ordered a good amount of food and all of it was very fresh and so good. The salmon sashimi was some of the best I have ever had. The chef also sent out some real wasabi, on the house - which was really cool of them to do. This is my new go to upscale sushi spot!
Nice and cozy place.
As one 2/14/18 they haven’t quite calibrated their open table account. Booked a res but when I arrived they weren’t prepared to seat. Serving took a long time. Probably an outlier but hey.
Really interesting food and a great waitress but what a mess on Valentines Day! I had read a good review of this place so booked it for our Valentines dinner. When we arrived there was a sign on the front door saying that they were sorry to say that because it was a special night they would only be able to serve people who had reservations. Our table was ready immediately so we sat and ordered drinks. So here’s the weird thing: in the very center of the room is a high table at which sat 8 pre- or young teenagers who were all cross-talking at full volume. Beside them there was a long table of people who were presumably their parents and friends and doing the same. This made the place very noisy and not what we expected for a reservations only Valentines dinner. One couple who came in just after we did walked out after a few minutes. The food was very good and we eat sushi almost every week but will never go back. Either these people were the owners and don’t care about the customers or the restaurant thought that taking a reservation for a party of 15 or more people on a traditional “couples night” was a good idea. Any other night it would be totally fine, but on V Day it was just wrong.
Great experience overall! Enjoyed the night and found a great new sushi place!
Excellent food, service and prices. It is a great sushi spot.
Good times! Amy was a great server.
too expensive. food quality so so.
can get a better sushi meal in a more reasonable price nearby.
Food is really good, fresh, and savory. Waitstaff very friendly, albeit a bit discombobulated.
As far as the ambience, it is really cute, and clean, but there was a toddler who literally screamed through our entire meal. The entire meal. It was crazy. The place is very small so it ruined the experience.
Top grade fresh fish, creative dishes, good service...a lovely neighborhood restaurant that is also worth the drive.
