I was in town for business and made a last minute reservation for my friends and I to go to Sushi Roku. I had been to this one before on a few different occasions over the years and knew that it was close by the hotel where we were all staying at. We were immediately seated. The server was great about suggesting items for our table and getting our drinks out quickly. The only thing that bothered me was that I specifically told the server that I was allergic to avocado. However, half of the rolls came out with avocado and it was up to me to figure out whether or not it had avocado in it. I didn't like that. So, I didn't eat half of the food that I ordered. Other than that, the dinner that I had was good.
This is one of my go to spots. Food is consistently excellent. Our server on the patio was great. Had her before and she’s attentive but not hovering. So many great things on the menu and we love ordering a variety of different items. Always leave full and happy?
I'm not one to write bad reviews, but this restaurant was pretty dismal considering that it is part of the BOA and Katana family (which are fantastic restaurants). Maybe it was because we were there for lunch? Or perhaps because the Santa Monica location is in a heavily tourist part of town, but the quality of service, smelly sticky tables, and low grade food was down right unacceptable. Every dish from the old dried up edamame to the stale rice with tuna, and low quality chicken skewers were all around inedible. We ended up walking out without touching much of the food and paying a hefty 120 dollar lunch bill fearing we might get sick from the low quality food. If you're looking for good sushi I would encourage anyone to steer clear from this place. If on a budget and looking for no frills sushi, head to your nearest Sugarfish and or if you're looking to splurge head to NOBU.
We had an amazing anniversary night out with the wifey. From the server to front desk, to the cooks and music. In truly was a night to remember and they all made a night on the town magical and heartwarming. Food was so rich and earthy, clean and lean. I'm definitely going back and prices were not too bad.
Best sushi experience I've ever had. Granted, I'm from the midwest, so I may not have access to the types of dishes, freshness, and authentic preparation. The octopus with yuzu kosho, lemon, and olive oil is one of the best things I've ever eaten in my entire life. It was so bright and the texture of octopus is fun to eat. The oysters were nice, but the condiment already on them overpowered the delicateness. I still enjoyed them. Chef made a rainbow roll for me, my favorite, and then I also tried the senshi roll, which has the most delicious spicy mayo sauce with it. If I ever am in Santa Monica again, I can't wait to come back here. It's loud and bustling, which wasn't bothersome to me, but that could be the only drawback if you're looking for a quiet experience.
We frequently dine here at Sushi Roku and we have NEVER been disappointed! Always the best sushi with many specials available which makes dining here always a new experience! Both sushi and cooked dishes makes this the perfect place for all who want to sample some of the best of Japanese food in town. The service here is impeccable as well!!
We dined at Sushi Roku-Santa Monica for a get-together with a special friend. All 3 of us love sushi. The choices offered by Sushi Roku are extensive. We all ordered some of their special rolls. The found was fantastic! It is one of the best sushi restaurants at which I have eaten.
Our experience at Roku Sushi was not what we expected it to be, not because of the quality of the food, but mainly the service.
When you put to eat at a premium restaurant , on a date, you expect to have something what I call a "dining experience".
- After taking our order, I told the waitress that we might order some more after. But without requesting, she just brought us the bill after we finished our first order. When she came back to collect the cheque, I asked her : You must really not like us, or you need this table. Because you didn't even ask of we were finished or if we would like some coffee or dessert!?" Her reply: "Ohw, it looked like you were finished. And I'm sorry, we don't have any dessert because the oven broke"
A broken oven can happen anytime, but how can you have a complete dining experience without dessert!? You should tell your guests UP-FRONT so they can decide if they stay if cancel the reservation. In our case, we would have cancelled. Next, after placing my card, we waited for 10 minutes but she never came to collect and totally ignored me signaling. I walked up to the front desk and complained about her attitude and not informing us about the broken oven.
After paying, the Manager came to out table and apologized and told us that actually there were some dessert options !? She gave her card and offered to "take care of us next time." So not at this moment? We were fed up and moved on to another restaurant and had a bite and dessert there.
The food was very good, but we won't be dining there again.
There's a scene in Albert Brooks movie, 'Defending Your Life', where he has died and is in the 'next place' before he moves on. One of the features of this place is that there are restaurants where the food is the best you've ever eaten and that your food is instantly ready and presented to you, seconds after you've placed your order. That's what Sushi Roku was like. It felt like eating in a factory.
We ordered the following: Albacore sashimi with crispy onions, a couple of orders of sushi, and two baked crab rolls. The Albacore was delivered to our table less than 5 minutes after we placed our order and less than 2 minutes after our beverages were delivered. I hadn't yet squeezed the lemon into my iced tea. We each had one bite of the sashimi and, within another minute or two, the baked crab rolls were delivered to the table. Approximately one minute later, our sushi arrived.
I'd never seen anything like it in a sushi restaurant. And, although I hadn't been to Roku in a couple of years, I've eaten there maybe a dozen times in the past, both in SM and at the now closed Beverly Connection location on 3rd St. Never experienced this before.
The quality of the fish was very good. No complaints about the food or preparation. It is a pretty expensive restaurant, however. One appetizer, 4 orders of sushi (8 pieces of fish), 3 hand rolls, one iced tea and our dinner was, with tip, over $100. The service, although friendly and pleasant, had all the pace and charm of eating at a fast food restaurant. We felt as if they couldn't get us out of the restaurant quickly enough.
There are plenty of places where you can get good quality sushi in LA. For me, Roku will no longer be one of them.
The food was delicious, however the only annoying and disappointing thing about the visit was that we had an 8pm reservation but didn't get sat until 8:40! What's the point in making a reservation? as a walk in time was the same wait period. May think twice about going next time.
I had great, fun memories of this place and delicious food from a few years ago. This latest, weekday lunch with friends has erased them. The patio was lovely, with a nice breeze and ocean view. But the service and kitchen were a disaster. The host was frazzled and telling off waiters in front of us. Our party of 3 arrived within 5 minutes of each other. Two different waiters came to ask about drinks, which then took their sweet time to arrive. One of our friends had been seated for literally less than a minute when a waiter came to take the order, and was very upset and pushy when he hadn't quite decided, and borderline rude when he asked questions about the menu. One friend got his meal quickly, but the sashimi albacore was overcooked (yep, sashimi!) and dry, the ponzu sauce too sweet. And the rest of us got our dishes way after our friend was finished with his... To the waiter's credit, they gave us one of the dishes for free. But the big disappointment was that the food was definitely not worth the wait. The fried shrimp was mostly fried batter, very little shrimp. Everything in the bento box was very bland, except the eggplant, which was perfectly cooked and melting in your mouth.
Went on a date night and was underwhelmed. The sushi was good, but nothing was impressive, could have been any sushi place within 10 miles. The edamame did not seem fresh and the drink I ordered, which only listed alcohol and 3 fruits was very very sweet with no noticeable fruit taste, probably just a cheap mix added to alcohol. The service was incredible and food came out very fast. It was so loud inside (7pm on a saturday) that we asked to be moved outside, which was fine if you like people watching in Santa Monica, which was amusing but would never be ideal for a nice occasion. The location should have told me everything I would have needed to know: their money goes toward rent, not amazing food. This is a restaurant for tourists.
