Sushi Roku - Pasadena Ratings and Reviews
The food remains good, but they were understaffed for the number of people at the restaurant on a Saturday night. If I’m paying $150 per person, I don’t want multiple instances of wondering where the wait staff is. More than a few times, our glasses of mixed drinks and waters were empty and it took longer than normal to order food.
We loved it! Seated promptly. Great service. Really great food. Better half had vegetable tempura and eggplant miso (exceptional) followed by hamachi (yellowtail). I had the potstickers and the salmon. Nice touch: the server offered the "older"menu's sides.
Definitely going back.
It'd been years since I'd been to Roku, and one bite into my seaweed salad, I wondered why I haven't been going there all along. The fish is as fine and fresh as any sushi I've had elsewhere in the area, the service is friendly and accommodating, and the menu's offerings are imaginative in all the right ways--making the most of superb ingredients. One outstanding example: toro carpaccio lightly dressed with yuzu truffle sauce, made ambrosial with a pinch of osetra caviar. The room can get noisy, but the long (afternoon through late into the evening) opening hours provide plenty of options for dining off-peak.
The food is Modern Asian style which tastes really new yet a tad strange to us. For the signature sushi dish, it didn’t come with wasabi, but a house made dipping sauce. Neither of us can tell what it is and the taste wasn’t suitable with sushi at all. However we were amazed by their desserts, which is able to with any high class French restaurant. Food quality and service is average, nothing wrong and nothing outstanding. Decor is good.
What an enjoyable afternoon lunch! We have been here several times (its a regular destination for us) but never before at lunch. Service was exemplary and attentive. Food delivery was perfectly timed and the quality of the seafood is unmatched. We happened on the preview for DineLA this visit so we tried their special offerings. Perfectly sized for lunch; added an order of Garlic Spicy Edamame to start. If you have a chance to try Sushi Roku between now and 1/26, start with their Lunch or Dinner offers. Everything on the menu is delicious for sushi fans.
Too slow, I had requested booth which we did not get. We were given a free appetizer to compensate which was ok. They were very slow, took a long time to get the food. The desert we ordered was moldy. This was the third year in a row that we were celebrating a birthday at Roku but it was for sure the last time.
Had the deep fried rice/sushi thingies, super good. Spicy edamame (great), assortment of nigiri (yellowtail, salmon, tuna) salmon and yellowtail we’re fantastic, tuna not so much (second time the tuna has been sub-par here, not sure what the deal is). white crab hand roll things, i don’t care for them (so little flavor) but my girlfriend loves them so it’s just a personal preference thing.
overall both meals i’ve had here have been pretty excellent. maybe just work on that tuna.
Came here for the first time since they were having a 50% off special. Food came quickly even though it was crowded and busy. The presentation of the omakase sushi set (see pic) and the Hokkaido scallops was very nicely done and impressive. Most of the food we ordered was delicious and well worth the price (especially at half off) so we were able to try quite a few different items.
We ordered the rib-eye steak which was served with a garlic? sauce that was delicious. as were the garlic string beans and potatoes which had some kind of special mayo sauce. We also had the baked cod with miso sauce, the Hokkaido scallops, pork belly fried rice, unagi and ikura sushi, 6-pc. omakase sushi (the fish were smooth and melted in your mouth), the shishito peppers for an appetizer and the ice cream/sorbet for dessert. The ice creams had a real rich and creamy flavor, accompanied with fresh fruit.
We enjoyed everything except for the fried rice (only 3 pieces of pork belly and it didn't really wow us taste wise). Also the green tea wasn't good at all. It was this warm, murky green water that didn't have much flavor, even though it was made with tea leaves. Quite disappointing when you're used to the super hot tea at a sushi bar where you can make it yourself with matcha powder.
All in all though, the meal was delicious and our waitress was very pleasant and attentive. Kudos to management for having enough staff on hand to accommodate all the extra crowd.
My friend and I sat at the sushi bar. The sea urchin was SO good. The chef we had was a really funny guy. We pretty much left it to him to make us whatever he wanted. We stuck to sushi and some hand rolls. The baked miso cod is a must have in addition to the sea urchin. But that’s if you like sea urchin.
This was Sushi Roku's 20th Anniversary and the restaurant was moderately crowded. Our server, Taleen, was pleasant and attentive. The Chilean Sea Bass, Hanabi and Eel and Avocado Rolls were exceptional than usual. The Wine List is moderately pricey but has a good variety of selections in most price ranges and varietals. It leans heavily to California wines. Their Happy Hour has a good selection of drinks and small plates. We have been coming here for nearly 20 years and they have not lost a step in all those years.
They kept messing up with my check. Advertised all food is 50% but they only discounted 3 items out of 10 we ordered. Sent the check back for correction and still incorrect. How difficult is it to apply 50% to total as they advertised????? Food was treally blend and beyond average.
