Sushi Roku - Pasadena Ratings and Reviews
Came here for the first time since they were having a 50% off special. Food came quickly even though it was crowded and busy. The presentation of the omakase sushi set (see pic) and the Hokkaido scallops was very nicely done and impressive. Most of the food we ordered was delicious and well worth the price (especially at half off) so we were able to try quite a few different items.
We ordered the rib-eye steak which was served with a garlic? sauce that was delicious. as were the garlic string beans and potatoes which had some kind of special mayo sauce. We also had the baked cod with miso sauce, the Hokkaido scallops, pork belly fried rice, unagi and ikura sushi, 6-pc. omakase sushi (the fish were smooth and melted in your mouth), the shishito peppers for an appetizer and the ice cream/sorbet for dessert. The ice creams had a real rich and creamy flavor, accompanied with fresh fruit.
We enjoyed everything except for the fried rice (only 3 pieces of pork belly and it didn't really wow us taste wise). Also the green tea wasn't good at all. It was this warm, murky green water that didn't have much flavor, even though it was made with tea leaves. Quite disappointing when you're used to the super hot tea at a sushi bar where you can make it yourself with matcha powder.
All in all though, the meal was delicious and our waitress was very pleasant and attentive. Kudos to management for having enough staff on hand to accommodate all the extra crowd.
My friend and I sat at the sushi bar. The sea urchin was SO good. The chef we had was a really funny guy. We pretty much left it to him to make us whatever he wanted. We stuck to sushi and some hand rolls. The baked miso cod is a must have in addition to the sea urchin. But that’s if you like sea urchin.
This was Sushi Roku's 20th Anniversary and the restaurant was moderately crowded. Our server, Taleen, was pleasant and attentive. The Chilean Sea Bass, Hanabi and Eel and Avocado Rolls were exceptional than usual. The Wine List is moderately pricey but has a good variety of selections in most price ranges and varietals. It leans heavily to California wines. Their Happy Hour has a good selection of drinks and small plates. We have been coming here for nearly 20 years and they have not lost a step in all those years.
They kept messing up with my check. Advertised all food is 50% but they only discounted 3 items out of 10 we ordered. Sent the check back for correction and still incorrect. How difficult is it to apply 50% to total as they advertised????? Food was treally blend and beyond average.
Big fan of Sushi Roku, been going to Pasadena location since it opened.
However, was very disappointed that after being seated at 8:30, was immediately informed that it was "last-call" for sushi and the kitchen.
I know this is LA and restaurants don't stay open late, but 8:30 last-call, not very cool.
Beautiful Japanese restaurant with authentic decor. We sat outside with a view of the interior. Service was excellent and prompt. It's located down an alley in charming square of shops and outdoor lights. We ordered sushi (divine) and fried rice (also very good) for a small dinner. My only criticism is that the restaurant didn't mark me as "attended" for my Open Table reservation and OT emailed me. (I also confirmed the rez earlier in the day.) I think they've now taken care of it.
Food was very innovative and quite excellent but pricey. The server appeared to have too many tables and took him forever to take our drinks and food orders and have dishes out. They did not tell us when the last order was and since we waited forever to get our food, we could not order more though we were still hungry.
Fantastic! The only issue we had was that a group of people at the bar were being extremely loud, howling at the game playing on the TV. I understand management being reluctant to say anything to the bar patrons for fear of insult, but the noise almost ruined our dining experience. I really don't think an upscale sushi restaurant needs to worry about catering to a sports bar crowd. Perhaps the owners/management would be willing to rethink the TV in the bar idea?
Extremely slow service. Server was not attentive. Not enough staff. Food was left at sushi bar sitting for long periods of time before being picked up and taken to the table. When arrived at table hand roll seaweed paper all soggy. Had to send back and wait another 20 minutes. The cuts of sushi and sashimi were off and bad quality. Quality and freshness of sushi questionable. We left most of our meal, as could not eat it.
Food was excellent but a little pricey! Good quality sushi and calamari was the bomb! Our server seems like she's rushing us to leave, she gave us our check already without asking us if we want dessert first! We had to tell her we wanted dessert, so she took the check back! Other than that, all was great 👍🏻
My wife and I love to go to Roku Sushi when we are in Pasadena!
We came out to Pasadena this time for our own bar crawl and definitely wanted to eat sushi before we started!
The service is always great and the food is always delicious! We would highly recommend Roku Sushi!
We have been going regularly to Sushi Roku since they came to Pasadena. We enjoy the sushi, specials etc. it is great for groups with both sushi & non-sushi diners because of their extensive menu. We always get great service & did as well this time too. Lately we have not thought the sushi & items from the kitchen were as good as they used to be. Not sure what has changed in the last couple of months. I hope it gets better again as this is a 'go to' place for us.
We were there to celebrate Father's Day. My son ordered the "Chef choice" of sushi which was a lengthy procedure of 5 rounds of plates with up to 10 elegant little bites on each plate. They were surprised by the one with kiwi fruit on scallop, and the remarked on the one that had marmalade on top of some fish. I did not partake of this feast with them, as I am not keen on raw fish, but they loved it.
Been coming here for years. Love everything about this place in terms of food, happy hour, and ambiance. Service can be a little slow though (almost every time). Took us 35 minutes to get our dinner order placed and drink orders often take about 15-20 minutes to arrive. The servers are working hard, but I just think they need to hire more to keep the flow going.
