My son and I traveled to DC and enjoyed the sushi here! It was very good sushi. He had several of the salmon nigiri and I had the Assorted Sashimi platter. The fish tasted very fresh and the sushi rice was very good too. We would definitely come back with the family next time in DC!

Me and my wife enjoyed our Valentines Day dinner at Sushi Gakyu and we were thoroughly impressed. The sushi was perfect, it is above our normal price range but the quality shows. Plus you pay for the location, the service, the ambiance so overall the price was on par with everything. The fish was the star of the plate as it should be, and I was impressed with the soft and delicate texture of the fish. It shows good craftsmanship with the cutting and preparation of the fish. The beer was superb. I enjoyed the service and the ambiance. I would absolutely recommend and return

I was very displeased with the food and service. I was served sushi with bones in it. Something a master sushi chef would never do. Over advertised quick unremarkable, Kaz is much better overall.

Coming from someone who has had sushi multiple times in Japan, I have to say that the sushi they served were some of the best I have ever had in the United States. The price is a bit steep, but the sushi was so good that I can't complain. The biggest problem I had was that we did not get our side dish and the sushi for almost an hour after we ordered. It's absolutely ridiculous that we had to wait that long for our food when the server said it would take about 10 minutes.

The bento box lunch special was a reasonable deal. All my dining companions enjoyed their orders. Not the server's fault but the restaurant should ensure adequate change is available for customers as the server had trouble making change so I could provide a larger tip (I paid with cash).

The waitress was FABULOUS!!!!!! She managed all of the guests and she was as attentive and courteous and knowledgeable as a waitress can be. The food was marvelous, and our waitress helped us make our selections, including a delicious sake. We will definitely be back to Sushi Gakyu very soon!!!!!

I enjoyed my business lunch at Sushi Gakyu. The food was tasty and the atmosphere was nice. My critique, however, is this: I arrived well before my reservation but they seated me promptly. But while I was waiting for my lunch partner, no waitperson ever checked on me to see if I wanted a water, other drink, or appetizer. Once my date arrived, it took some time before the waitperson came to take our order. Other tables appeared to be waiting a while for their ordering, too. Once we did order, the food was delivered relatively soon. There was apparently only one wait person serving the entire restaurant on this Tuesday and she was stretched pretty thin. To me, that's a management issue and not the fault of the single waitstaff.

Our server was fabulous and because we made a reservation, we got the best table in the house. The food was quite good although expensive relative to other sushi restaurants we’ve tried. I was also surprised how few guests were there at 7 pm on a Thursday.

I can’t say enough good things about this restaurant. DC lacks good sushi and this fills the gap. The quality, taste, and presentation of dishes is on par with Sushi Taro while the menu is more varied and extensive. The service is also top notch. Highly recommended for anyone looking for fresh and creative sushi in DC.

Average sushi at big city price. Sample platters were made in advance and proportions small.

Overall, the quality of the fish was good, but the portions are too small for the price. The eel avocado roll, spicy tuna roll, and salmon nigiri, and then the fatty yellowtail nigiri (aburi style) were delicious. The salmon avocado, tuna jalapeno, and crunchy salmon rolls were just okay, they didn't have much flavor. All the rolls are pretty small in size. Our group also ordered the Jo chirashi and Gakyu chirashi - for the price we expected more fish. Instead, they were also small servings. Our server was great - very attentive and friendly. We were there to celebrate a birthday and they gave a complimentary mochi for dessert, which we appreciated.

This place offers very traditional Japanese style sushi in a quiet setting. Everything we selected was very well made and quite yummy. The service was excellent and everyone was respectful and attentive to our needs. Do not expect all sorts of creative rolls or any type of fusion dishes. This place is quite traditional. They offer a nice variety of sashimi and nagiri with a great sake menu.

After dining in hundreds of sushi restaurants I find the fish to be the best I have ever experienced. The cocktail list and wine list needs to be expanded. The listing of Sake should have to be detailed so that non-Japanese diners can make an intelligent decision. It seems that this restaurant is focused on Native Japanese customers and could become more popular if they cared to other customers.

Still a great sushi restaurant. I had the more expensive omakase and it was worth every cent. It’s amazing the flavors a creative sushi chef can get out of various types of fish. Very friendly and professional service. One year ago I was wondering why the restaurant isn’t packed every day. I still have that question. It’s just a couple blocks from the White House and there are a lot government and private sector offices all around.

Great, authentic sushi restaurant. Very fresh fish. Delicious and reasonably priced compared to comparable upscale American restaurants where you might have to spend $150-$300 per person for a prix fixe meal.

I have found that Sushi in DC typically reflects average quality food that is overpriced. Sushi Gayku is not an exception to the rule. We had appetizers, sushi, and sashimi. Apps were tasty, but you maybe got one big bite to endulge on. The sashimi was probably the best as they delivered nice big slices. The nigiri included small pieces of fish, had too much rice and didn't scream freshness oor taste. The vegetarian pieces that we also ordered were uninspired. On the bright side, we had a very pleasant server who took good care of us.

I’ve been here numerous times and the food, as always, is outstanding. However, the service this time was not up to snuff. The waiter balked at our request for fresh spoons when a second round of soup arrived, and only gave us one bowl to share it in, expecting the other to eat directly out of the pot. Considering the price tag skimping on dishes and utensils should not be an issue. I’ll still be back though because the sushi is so fresh

Sashimi was not fresh and cuts were stringy. I eat a lot of sushi/sashimi and was expecting a higher quality of fish, especially for the price. It doesn’t compare at all to similarly priced sushi restaurants. Service was great, people were kind. The food itself was extremely lacking in cut and quality.

Great service but the portion size and sushi quality did not match the price. It was way too expensive. I was disappointed with the quality more than anything. Most likely will not go back.

This restaurant isn't bad but I had chosen it for a business lunch and found it a bit underwhelming. If you are in the area looking for a place to grab a quick lunch, it would be fine.

The sushi was really delicious and fresh.
The chef left in the middle of our meal prep and so the waiter had to prepare our next plate of 🍣 sushi. I’m not sure how I felt about that.

A little gem in DC. Fresh, beautifully prepared sushi. Attentive staff. Great for a quick lunch. Location is very convenient - half a block from Treasury bldg. Do yourself a favor: don't walk by. Stop in and enjoy a great meal.
