Sushi Damo - Rockville
Of course, most come to Sushi Damo for the great food. Some of the tasty appetizers on the main menu include the marinated chicken on skewers, tempura, mango crab towers and the fried oysters. Choose from various types of noodles, as well as entrées that feature chicken, beef, pork, seafood or vegetarian options. Sushi Damo has plenty of sushi options, as well including classic rolls, such as the tuna avocado roll and the California roll.
8 pieces assorted sushi and tuna roll or california roll

Classic Rolls w Sushi
20 pcs Chef selected sushi, 2 Cali rolls, 2 spicy Tuna rolls, 2 Shrimp Temp rolls
We love this restaurant but hadn’t been in almost 2 years because of COVID. It was great being back.
Every year we go to Sushi Damo for our “Christmas dinner”. Always excellent, never a disappointment.
I love it. my Family loves it and we cannot have enough. The food is amazing and consistent and the Chef Takashi Okamura is always fantastic and the best! I cannot compliment my favorite sushi restaurant enough. I cannot wait to go back. See you soon.
The sushi was average. It can definitely be improved. We came in because we thought it was going to be outstanding.
I suppose the challenge was a lack of staff. Service was painfully slow and that kind of spoilt the experience, despite the food being ok
It took ONE hour to get drinks brought to our table. Which we were then told it would be another hour wait for dinner.
The sushi was fresh snd the service was excellent.
Our server did a very good job considering how understaffed they were, which is not unique to Sushi Damo. The food is good-to-very good...
- The Tempura was a bit greasy
- The rolls were quite good
I lived in Japan for 5 years and regularly go to Japanese restaurants. It wasn't a lot of money ($1), but I asked for a little more ginger and was charged for it. I have probably been to hundreds of sushi restaurants around the world and have never been charged for extra ginger (and, they didn't even give that much more...3-4 slivers). That left a 'bad' taste in my mouth.
I would recommend Sushi Damo with the following caveats:
- There is better Tempura other places (or maybe they just had an off night)
- Sushi was good, but a little on the expensive side. Yuraku has better and more fish for less money but the restaurant is definitely not as pretty
Limited vegetarian options made it a poor experience for us. Sushi chef refused to leave out the fish and make a tofu only roll -- which is up to him. Some of the food was good, some only average. Noted in the reservations that it was my daughter's birthday and they didn't do anything special -- again, that's up to them but contributed to us not really diggin' the venue. It's a nice enough place but if you're a vegetarian, it's your birthday and you have a craving for some sushi, I'd avoid Sushi Damo, otherwise it's all good.
resturant not crowded, but noise was quite loud even at a table in an alcove. Rolls and sashimi were OK, but freshness not up to what we have seen here before. Fish should not have fishy aroma-- this did. Not strong but definite. Appetizers - lamb chops and shrimp bites were excellent as were the drinks. Like everywhere now, not enough serves.
I chose SD for my birthday because the sushi is brilliant! I especially love the Twilight Roll. And, of course, the outdoor seating is lovely as is the staff.
We held a last minute surprise dinner for our son and his friends. They all had a great time and loved the food. We sat nearby and enjoyed ourselves as well. Sushi Damo is one of my favorite area restaurants of any type.
Service was good but food was slow to come out. I know it’s due to covid and short staff. Most restaurants have this problem
They have amazing sushi which is why my family and I decided to come. We know they’re known for terrible service but tonight was extra slow. It took an HOUR to get our sushi. But people who didn’t order sushi got their food first so by the time sushi came they just watched us eat. It was a ridiculous amount of wait time and they should’ve disclosed that they only had one sushi chef so it would be slow. But still. How can you function as a restaurant in Rockville town center with an hour wait time for food lmaoooo....
Food and service are always excellent. Staff very knowledgeable
one of the top Japanese restaurants in Montgomery County and all of DC area!
Sushi for the ignorant. If all but 1 roll is composed of mostly cooked products, no exotic or high-end products (natto, munk fish liver, kama or o toro, etc.) are offered, and the server can't explain the types of fish (e.g. hamachi = yellowtail), it's a crappy sushi restaurant. I'd give it a much higher rating if the prices were halved as this would match the overall quality.
Dinner at Sushi Damo exceeded our expectations. Everything from the food to the service was spectacular - we purchased a Groupon to try, but I foresee us becoming regulars.
The food was great and the service outstanding
The fish is fresh and the selection of special rolls is unique and tasty! If I was being picky, some of the appetizer portions are a bit small for the price. The service is great even though the sushi bar can be slow (we’ve been twice and the server has warned us of this both times).
Terrible service. We had to leave after two hours without getting our dessert. Very weird experience. Would not go back.
Sushi Damo had been our favorite Japanese restaurant for a long time. But on the last two visits, the staff has seemed overwhelmed and the service suffered as a result. The food is consistently good but management there needs to figure out how to handle customers better. When we arrived there was no one at the hostess station and after waiting awhile a waitress sat us and said it would be some time before she'd be able to return. It appeared that a bartender was serving at the next table over. It's a popular place but customers are going to go elsewhere if they don't bring on additional help.
Incredibly slow service and overpriced for what it was. Disappointed.
Great service. Food was very tasty. Loved the warm atmosphere. Will recommend and be back again.
I really liked the vibe of this place. The pear ginger martini was great. It actually tastes like pear and ginger. I enjoyed the spicy tuna roll and spicy yellowtail roll. These were both delicious. My dining partner had the eel special, which was very tasty. The waitress did not say that there was crab/?lobster in the eel rolls. We wish she did, but this dish was great. My parking was validated for 4 hours. This makes a difference in downtown Rockville.
Great variety with rolls and dishes you won't find elsewhere. Parking garages nearby so parking isn't a problem.
Food is good and service is very attentive! Will go back again!
We were all delighted with our food ... nicely prepared edamame and sushi rolls for appetizers, sea bass, shrimp and special rolls for dinner and a perfect chocolate mousse to top it off. I love the ginger pear martini and the service was excellent.
I decided to try out this restaurant and use a Groupon. I was pleasantly surprised. We only ordered the sushi which added up to $80 but all four of us were full. The sushi was fresh and the waitress was really friendly. I think the table was kind of small because we kept knocking over our drinks. The ambience was nice and noise level was low. I really wanna go back and try their $10 lunch special. I think that will be a really good value! Oh, they also gave my husband a free dessert for his birthday. We will be going back!
One of the best sushi places in the area, a total win!
Delicious sushi, great food options for the kids. Service was incredible as always. We will be back next week!
Sushi Damo has excellent service, nice atmosphere and great location. It’s too bad the sushi does not match these amenities. While the fish and rolls are certainly decent, they are only fair. The rice was a tad dry, and there was too much of it. The fish was fresh enough, but lacked...flavor. Even the edamame was pale and limp, and the tomatoes in the salad were wrinkly from age. After the good reviews my friend and I were disappointed. Perhaps we experienced an off night.
Fresh Sushi - can't beat it!
Relaxing time for Christmastide.
Sushi was excellent. Service was great- sue was our server and she was very attentive.
They offer a nice selection of sushi, and the food was good. However, they seem to really want to be a bar more than a restaurant, as we were asked six separate times by three different representatives if we care to order drinks.
This may have been the most horrible experience I’ve ever experienced. For starters, there was no host. We walked in and there were dirty dishes on the host stand as a server came by and asked how many. I told him we had a reservation (to get my OT points) and he just goes “ok but for how many” and just had us follow him as he was trying to decide where to seat us followed by “is this good?” Which happened to be right behind the host stand with nothing blocking it, so close that everytime anyone would go play host, their butts were almost touching us. Then we hardly got greeted after ten minutes of sitting there, the most interaction we got was a server coming by with two waters saying “sorry for the wait” and running off. (It was a random Wednesday night and the place was close to empty). Finally we mention we have a Groupon and no one seems to really understand the Groupon. A different server came around and we mentioned the Groupon and he said there was a certain menu we could pick things from so we asked for it, and no one came to give it to us for another ten minutes. Finally we ask the other server and he comes back ten minutes later with a picture of it on his phone cuz they “don’t have a physical copy” which was weird. It’s like we were teaching them about their own deals. Then we ordered a bottle of wine cuz it came with the Groupon and it took another 20 mins to get to us. We ordered two appetizers and they took SO LONG that I completely forgot we even ordered any. Finally our entrees came out and they weren’t worth the wait at all. They were very subpar definitely something I could have gotten at a different sushi place in 1/3 of the time. We then ordered dessert to go, we had plans and we were on the verge of missing them considering we have been sitting for a little over two hours and we’d JUST finished our entrees. By the time the dessert came (another 20 minutes) we definitely missed our plans and were super annoyed. Such a mess, never going back
Made a reservation on a Sunday evening, and the place looked really nice and was pretty quiet. However it took over 10 minutes for us to get treated and we were sitting at the Sushi bar. I need to add that it wasnt busy at all. Unfortunately, we didnt even end up eating there bc they didnt offer a seaweed substitute for their sushi rolls. The most common are soy and rice paper. I've been to many Sushi restaurants and this was the first who didnt offer a substitute. We went around the corner to another sushi place and had amazing sushi with soy paper.
The specialty rolls are delicious, creative, and enticing. I would need more time to evaluate other items on the menu.
Always the best sushi. Comparable to NYC or LA. Better than anyplace downtown for the money. Creative, fresh sushi. Great service. Modern chill vibe. Try and grab a couch in the lounge.
