We love the Surfing Deer for the Peanut Butter Rush alone.
Terrible service! Realized it was a busy night, but our server passed us repeatedly as we waited on our entrees over 40 minutes. When food was delivered it looked like it had been sitting in the kitchen awhile. Manager offered us dessert at no charge.
Our food was fantastic! We started with the gumbo, which was so rich and thick, delicious! then moved to the entrees. My husband had the special, red snapper topped with a delicious sauce and served with grits. Mine was braised beef served with an incredible risotto, yumm! Our congratulations to the chef and staff, they are doing a great job.
If only the front of the house could keep up with the back! Have been here a number of times, and unfortunately they are consistent..... the amazing efforts of the kitchen simply can not overcome the incredibly bad service. While the pecan crusted grouper and seafood acadiana are sublime, that's where the good times end. Reservations mean very little to the management, as we've had to wait 15-30 minutes before being shown to our (reserved) table just about every time we've been and the wait staff is either ambivalent or under trained, as they simply don't seem to care.

Enjoyed every minute of the dining experience at Surfing Deer! The 4 of us started with drinks and appetizers (smoked trio and lobster tacos), and then shared the charred avocado and salad with fried oysters. We got 4 entrees — 2 of us had the pecan crusted grouper with butternut squash, and 2 had the seafood acadiana. We somehow managed to make room for dessert, as we shared the bourbon cranberry and pear crumble, and peanut butter (Reese’s pb cup) pie. While the food was delicious, the service by Derrick (our server) and crew was exceptional. The icing on the cake was the sincere appreciation shown by the manager for our business, and his genuine interest in making sure the evening was wonderful.
I could not wait to write this review. This place was awesome. Beautiful atmosphere, friendly staff, and most importantly delicious food. It is a little bit loud, but we had no problem holding a conversation amongst ourselves. We ordered the clothesline bacon as an app and it was so flavorful and the presentation was unique. I had the porter braised beef short ribs and I cannot emphasize enough how tender and tasty they were. Loved the French onion risotto and was surprised by my liking of the carrots. All well prepared and beautifully presented. My husband had the seafood anadiana and loved it as well. We were both sufficiently stuffed afterwards. Everything was very prompt but not rushed at all. Our server was attentive and helpful with our selections. Cannot wait to go back!

The food was very flavorful. However, three members of my party ordered the short ribs and they were room temperature. It would have been perfect has it been warm.
Upscale restaurant on HWY 30A. It was our second visit in two years. Service was excellent and food was very good. I read a review that noise level was high but we did not experience that even though we were there during Happy Hour.
It was awesome as it always is. We love dining at Surfing Deer. The view of the gulf is beautiful!

One person had to send his entree back because the grouper was rubbery and overcooked.
All four entrees were too salty.
The Vegan entree was fried and covered in sauces. I think most vegans choose to eat fresh, clean and healthy. I would have preferred 3 or 4 fresh , unsalted non fried veggies.
Great menu just too heavy and salt laden for a beach town.

Male valet attendant extremely rude (“I’ll get to you when I get to you!”, and to another customer, “you just wait your turn!”) and clueless as to how to orderly manage parking.
Waitress not know about offerings. Lettuce used in oyster Caesar was bruised, brown on cut ends, soft & unpalatable. Oysters were very good. Breads were hard & cold. Our guests were unhappy with their fish- over cooked/dry.
This is our third and sadly, our last, dinner here. The grouper was over cooked/dry during our last visit despite our advising our waiter that we had had that experience previously and receiving his assurances that he would speak with the chef and make sure the grouper was properly cooked. He never checked back to see whether we were satisfied.
As locals, we have many options and choose not to settle for consistently over cooked seafood, let alone rude behavior by parking attendants.
We are disappointed as we’d hoped to enjoy this restaurant as it is very convenient to our home but, three unacceptable dinners in a row is no incentive to return.

Everything was delicious. We might have to go back this week before we leave town.
Started upon entering when our reservation for 6 were not all there but arrived by reservation time 6:00. Restaurant policy - they will charge $25.00 per person if not fulfilled and they do take credit card when booking reservation.
I feel like if I am being charged for table at least seat me especially when restaurant is half empty. Or smart thing would be to direct to bar ... but no just sit in waiting room.
Service and appetizers were good.
Dinner special sounded good but when 5 of the 6 entrees came out out and group politely waited for the last entree, everyone’s was cold.
When total bill and tip was over $300.00 and 4 of the party were 17 year old girls. Surfing Deer was a huge disappointment.
A lot better restaurants and food elsewhere without the traffic and hub bub of location.
Tonya, our waiter, was wonderful, so attentive and extremely nice to our grand daughters.
Loved everything but the lobster tacos..disappointing! Lobster was too small to even know it was lobster! Otherwise loved our experience
Great ambiance as we sat outdoors and had a water view. Lovely outdoor area! The service was exceptional!! Not one complaint as far as service goes. The food quality was alright. Not anything to write home about. One member of our party had super bland fish and wasn’t impressed. I had the short ribs which were amazing themselves, however the risotto was way undercooked. The calamari was average. Overall, the atmosphere and service would bring me back, not necessarily the food. I don’t feel I outspent the quality of the food...
Surfing Deer is a must for my husband and I on every beach vacation. Always a great variety of vegan choices for us, creative cocktails and great ambiance.
