Billy Quon & wife Teresa welcome you to the beautiful SUR Restaurant, located at The Barnyard Shopping Village in Carmel (at the mouth of Carmel Valley at Hwy 1).
Once the site of the famous Thunderbird Bookstore, SUR is now a chic, comfortable, and welcoming culinary delight! Locals rave over the beautiful Big Sur/Carmel decor, big cushy leather booths, fabulous creative cuisine, moderate prices, and attentive friendly service.

We were so disappointed. Friends had raved about this restaurant, so we tried it for the first time. It took over 30 minutes between the appetizer and entree, and the French dip came out cold with cold, soggy onion rings. Not crispy. The other entree didn’t come out with it. The waiter whisked the French dip away to get a hot one and it came back a few minutes later with the chicken entree. It had been microwaved. :(. Onion rings still soggy. Beef was now overcooked. The owner came over and apologized, sent out a couple of Ghiradelli chocolate squares as an apology and took one of the entrees off the bill. Not sure we would try it again.
Very good food. I just wish they would have done a little something to celebrate my husband's birthday. I did mention in our reservation that we were celebrating, but they didn't do anything.
Birthday dinner. It was so fun!
Greeted by friendly staff, seated immediately upon checking in. Waitstaff not as attentive or geniunely engaged with patrons - more repetitively than being in the present. Food not always as described. Asian Rice Bowl strides fry vegetables (Shitake mushrooms, pineapple, broccoli (missing from dish) and assorted vegetables - sliced celery, carrots, zucchini, onions, and bean sprouts) over cooked and drowning in soy sauce served on a "plate" with undercooked rice. The salmon dishes over cooked - fish tacos were dry as well as the Grilled Salmon. Oven roasted Brussel sprouts were excellent without the feta, but were ladened with olive oil. It's popular with the locals, but we were unimpressed.
We go to Sur frequently due to our love of the place...We take our visitors there because we know the food & service will be consistent ...(Also order their fun ice cream dessert for our guests to enjoy)...
There is also outside dining (though it is limited). Its always a great dining experience.
Excellent service, excellent food, and excellent wine! Would recommend to anyone!
Always expect the best from Sur and tonight was no exception. Delicious pasta meals. Scrumptious sauces and fresh seafood!
Mother/Son weekend. Looking for a nice, unique, but not too expensive restaurant for dinner. We got there early and they seated us on a wonderful patio. Food and wine was wonderful. Would definitely go there again and recommend for any occasion.
The food was excellent and everyone was friendly and professional. Will be back again!
Really wish there were more gluten free options... especially the fries.
My mother’s birthday was coming up and I knew she wanted to spend the day in Carmel. I began to look for nearby restaurants that had good ratings, a lovely ambiance and that’s when I came across Sur at The Barnyard. The photos/menu of the food looked appetizing and everyone had such wonderful things to say about the place. I made reservations & once we got there, we were welcomed very nicely by two women in the front. Our waiter, the food, the ambiance, just EVERYTHING was amazing! My family and I all said we need to make the drive to Carmel something that happens more often, just so we can eat at Sur.
Wonderful meal for our anniversary. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. Great ambiance.
We love eating at Sur. Great food good ambience and wonderful service.
Fantastic meal as always. Had the lunch specials. Prawns and sand dabs. Both delicious. Complimented me with a special desert
We ordered New Zealand Sea Bass. The order that came out was sand dabs. The correct order came out after everyone else was almost finished with their meal. Overall, the food was not good considering the prices. There was no deductions for the wrong order, all we got was a few pieces of chocolate served up in their showy dry ice platter. We are very unimpressed despite all the rave reviews on Yelp. We were there with friends who liked the place, were regulars, and knew the owner. So we didn't want to raise a fuss, they were already mad that the waiter got the order wrong. We will never go back.
Fabulous! Large, varied menu, with something of interest for everyone. Top-notch delicious food with fabulous presentation. Superb staff. Cannot say enough about this amazing restaurant!
Wonderful and abundant selection of dishes to choose from, loved the separate lunch menu card that had additional offerings. Loved the Mimosa menu...I had the lunch special of a turkey, avocado, bacon slider with (the best I’ve ever eaten) French fries and a cup of lentil soup, Yum! It was just the right amount of food. We will definitely be back! Thank you Sur
Kids love to come here for the ice cream "experience".
It was a pleasant evening and the food was wonderful. Will go back again for sure.
A great Carmel restaurant with fantastic food and friendly service.
Everything was great - and Thanks Bill for the birthday dessert for my buddy Joe !

Great happy hour. We had our dog with us so sat outside....very pleasant. Food was great! Very expansive menu.
Great atmosphere and fantastic food. Would definitely go back again and again.
Love their fish tacos! This was my second visit to Sur. The staff is very friendly and the patio is a great spot to sit for lunch on a sunny day.
Always excellent. A very well run restaurant!
We love this place. Great food! We make sure to stop here whenever we visit Carmel.
Food was good but not great. The service was excellent. A good value.
Excellent all the way around, from the menu options, to the food presentation, to the service, to the delicious food. It's always been consistent and this visit was no exception!
Love this restaurant.. Service is always excellent..
Food is consistently delicious and always have to
order the fun dessert!
Main course arrived way too quickly after started - we hadn’t finished main course when the starter came out. We ordered calamari strips and bacon & bread for starters to share between 4, so not a big load of starters. Bacon & bread was nothing special, not worth the hype on Yelp.
Main course bouillabaisse was overly salty, fish & chips was bland and not seasoned, sanddabs with beurre bland and lemon sauce was similarly not seasoned before frying and there was barely and sauce on the fish and what sauce there was was too thick. Seabass was OK but nothing special.
We had to ask the server to refill our water on three different occasions.
Overall, not impressed with this place. Far better restaurants around with better tasting food and better service. Go elsewhere.
The staff, service and ambiance was great!!! They were very accommodating for a large party and for the kids. Food tasted great but was a bit pricey. Regardless of price I would definitely recommend this restaurant and would return.
We stopped in for dinner while traveling up the coast. We couldn’t have been more pleased at every aspect of dining here. So thankful we found this hidden gem in Carmel
We thoroughly enjoyed my birthday dinner at Sur the other night. Bill and Teresa Lee know how to make every guest feel at home. The food is tasty and the portions are generous, which makes the higher-than-average prices easy to take. The huge windows on two sides bring the garden in, and the decor makes a statement - it feels like the conservatory of a slightly eccentric aunt's Park Avenue mansion. A highlight was the complimentary birthday ice cream served atop a bed of dry ice that created pillows of magical 'smoke' that delighted a nearby family (and us).
I loved sitting out on the patio - tho it was overcast and misty, it wasn't too cold - and it wasn't too noisy - and it was a very enjoyable experience!
Kid friendly, nice atmosphere, good variety and presentation of food; must try the arctic dessert!!
We had our friends birthday celebration. I was nervous because I ve never been to this place before and we drove from San Jose.
But the place was very good. We enjoyed everything!!
Had an amazing lunch outside!
This is a restaurant that tries to be too many things and isn’t very good at any of them.
