Sunda Ratings and Reviews
Very tasty food in an urban hip atmosphere. Some nice new twists on traditional nigiri, sashimi and rolls. Lots of offerings here, and small and medium plates to create your own tasting experience. The wine selection was nice too, and not overpriced. Overall, this is a solid choice for a night out on a date or with a group of friends. It's a big open space, but surprisingly not noisy making it easy to have conversation.
Have previously been to Sunda for dinner. This time went with a group of business associates for lunch. We had a great time. Ordered a bunch of different dishes and sushi and were not disappointed with anything. Server was excellent and back up staff always made sure waters were filled and dirty dishes removed promptly. Not overly crowded like it generally is in the evening, so easy to have conversation as background noise was not overly loud. Good location, great overall experience.
Sunda provides excellent food in a trendy and fun area. I have been here many times and will come back again.
I do, however, have a few critiques. Sunda takes the approach of cramming as many tables into their area as possible. On more than one occasion, I have literally had to rub shoulders with strangers at different tables. In my most recent trip to Sunda I barely had room to walk to the bathroom without bumping into other tables. This was especially frustrating because the restaurant was far from full.
Additionally, even though the food is outstanding, the bill gets sneaky expensive. On my most recent trip to Sunda, my party of two spent over $150 without any alcohol. It was a great meal, but we were by no means stuffed.
I definitely recommend it but I would not consider it an intimate date spot or a particularly great value.
I would give 4.5 out of 5.0. Does Sunda live up to the hype? I would say yes.
We started with the Brussels Sprout salad. That might have been worth a 200 mile car trip to have that. You could have served that to me in the waitress’ shoe and I would have eaten it. It was that good.
We then tried the duck steamed buns. Those were good. Could have had more duck meat on them.
We had the Rainbow roll and the crunchy pig roll. We thought the rainbow roll was excellent and superior to the crunchy pig roll.
We finished with the Ridiculous dessert. Really really good. We loved it.
We are from out of town, but if we have the opportunity, we will return to Sunda without hesitation.
I also love going to Sunda but time and time again, the service is lacking. Our service during the meal was good but the table back was very rude and sloppy. A couple of times someone asked for something and he didn't acknowledge them, just walked away and notified the server. He also spilled water every time he refilled the glasses and spilled soy sauce on the table. With that being said, the food is always perfect and thats the reason why I continue to go back. Just wished the service was better.
I do not like leaving a bad review. I have many, many friends who run, are servers for, and bartenders at restaurants around the city. It is hard work. Customers can be unreasonable. Some are a**holes. So, with that caveat — something is awry when the server introduces themselves twice in five minutes, in between not bringing drinks. It went downhill from there. Food great. But this is a place where there should be decent if not really good service. Didn’t happen.
Since we first started going to Sunda (many years ago) I've never seen it full up for brunch and I've never seen them space guests apart. The restaurant had literally one table seated when we entered. We were immediately seated right beside them and then 10 minutes later a table of 10 with 5x kids were seated on the other side of us (REALLY?). It was super irritating when the rest of the dining area stayed mostly empty for the rest of our meal. Food is always good and Sunda and it hadn't changed since our last visit. Crispy rice tuna is our favorite with all members of our group ordering it. The new(ish) cauliflower dish was fantastic - spicy and sweet at the same time. Not mushy, not over-sauced. It's a winner. The Bi Bim Bop tasted great but there seemed to be too much of everything - seasoning, sauce, rice. The ramen bowl was a good value but the ingredients just didn't taste right - maybe the broth, maybe the seasoning (we left it uneaten). Sake flight was reasonably priced; Bloody Mary bar was a great value; Soda was watery and it was hard to get a refill. All in all a good meal - we enjoyed it even with the gaggle of yelling kids sitting so close.
