Does eating at Sunda feel like eating in the club? Yes, but you don't have to love the ChampagnePapi lifestyle to love this restaurant.
Our service was excellent, food was delicious and enjoyed the family style of sharing plates!
Sunda is an amazing restaurant with a great menu, wine and cocktail list. The staff is attentive and friendly. My only problem with the restaurant is that the noise level is uncomfortably loud. It makes conversation across a table difficult.
Service and fish was AMAZING as usual!
Just wished they had mackerel. Because the mackerel there is fabulous!
It was very nice ambiance. The food is really good. It’s just loud.
Good not great in terms of food. Some items were great, such as Brussels sprout and oxtail potstickers. Maki rolls were average and expensive. The Dan Dan noodle had too much middle eastern spices and was simply not edible. Good cocktails and good service and ambience. Will return if on company’s dime otherwise not worth it
Everything we tried was delicious! Great service too! Very pretty atmosphere
Took 28 mins after reservation time to be seated, which was extremely disappointing. Kind of kills the buzz of coming to a very nice place for dinner. What’s the point of making a reservation at this restaurant if they can’t figure out a way to optimize reservations so that you’re not waiting nearly 30 minutes?
The appetizers we got were pretty solid. The cauliflower miso style was great as well. Then we got one of the curries, which was extremely disappointing! It was over spiced with things that didn’t exactly blend well. The resulting taste made it unfortunately one of the most disappointing curries I have ever had.
I will not come back.
Great food, amazing service made for a great night out for my husband's birthday! This was our first time here, and we will be back for sure! The Tiger Shrimp was amazing!!
I love Sunda because it offers almost a full vegan menu. I always have the mushroom adobo because it is delicious but this time it was a bit less flavorful than it has been in the past. So I was somewhat disappointed. The spicy edamame and vietnamese salad were delicious. And while the blackberry sorbet was wonderful, given that the kitchen is willing to put together such a beautiful separate vegan menu, a few more vegan dessert options would be wonderful. Hence my comment about almost a full vegan menu.
Overall, I enjoy going here. It definitely gets quieter as the evening goes on, but the earlier noise makes for a fun vibe.
Noise level was painful, too crowded, too dark, impossible to converse- my third and last visit
Excellent first experience at Sunda! Food is amazing. A little noisy. Would definitely return and recommend to friends!
This place was awesome. Our server was great and had amazing recommendations. Food was phenomenal!
Amazing food!! We had no idea how delicious everything would be. Highly recommend Sunda!
We got the chicken pad Thai, a Red Dragon roll, and the spicy edamame. Perfect for two people. Delicious! The service was top notch and it was a hip, chic place. A great place for some yummy Asian food!
Fantastic sushi lunch spot. menu fresh and inventive. service awesome... sushi came out in about 45 seconds after it was ordered! thought we were in a SNL skit!
.. Many thanks!
If you like sushi, this is a place to discover. The food is great and the service is terrific. The place is a bit noisy, but once you dig into you food you won't notice it. I had the Lumpia (just ok), and the Crunchy Pig Hidden Lobster (awesome). The Crunchy Pig is lobster, avocado, jalapeno, chili peppers, and crushed bacon. A mouthful of different flavors explode in your mouth. My wife had the crab sushi (I can't remember the name) and it too was very good. I highly recommend.
The food was tasty as always but the service was really disappointing and tainted the experience. My 6-person party went on a Wednesday evening, meaning not a super busy night and no one really sitting at the bar, and somehow our drink orders were slow to come and few and far between. I asked at least 2 times for our order over the course of nearly 25 minutes in the middle of dinner, it was very odd to have our server literally disappear for long spells. The service was really unfortunate for this level of dining. We practically had to hunt our server down when it came time to pay the check and then it took another 30 minutes and for one of our mates to drop the check off to the service station in the center of the restaurant to get everything done with.
Our dinner at SUNDA is in need of serious HELP, HELP, HELP !
SERVICE: TWO STARS
FOOD: ONE STAR
The underwhelming service provided by our front waiter was NOT her fault. She explained that her back waiter had “disappeared” and couldn’t be found. Aside from our 3-top, she was simultaneously waiting on a 6-top right next to us. The assistance of the back waiter DIDN’T HAPPEN until his arrival at the last course. During the entire length of the dining experience, no solution to the missing back waiter. For this mishap, our blame is directed solely to management.
Under the above mentioned circumstances, the server - - whose name has been removed to provide any embarrassment - - was gracious and knowledgeable.
F O O D
Ordered twelve different menu items and NOTHING WAS OUTSTANDING.
THREE ITEMS FELL IN THE “GOOD” CATEGORY:
Brussel Sprout Salad, Pork Buns, Seoul Wings
TWO ITEMS FELL IN THE “JUST OK” CATEGORY:
Lumpia, Crab Garlic Noodles (although the search for the crab continues)
TWO ITEMS FELL IN THE “LESS THAN OK” CATEGORY:
Oxtail Potstickers, Beef Lollipop
TWO ITEMS FELL INTO THE “NOPE! NOT EVEN OK” CATEGORY:
BBQ Octopus: inedible, overcooked to the point of being rubbery; all the pieces remained on the plate after one bite
Crazy Rice: dry and lacking promised seafood described on the menu
In both cases of the NOPE! NOT EVEN OKAY food, there was no inquiry why the food remained on the plates, untouched.
The “Ridiculous” was good
The banana dumplings from the ‘Special’ card were just okay
The three birthday cupcakes were good
To say we were disappointed would be an understatement.
Wishing this review to save any similar, potential disaster occurring, we believed the hype, our mistake. So many other fine and delicious restaurants prevail in that neighborhood, not to mention all of Chicago.
PS. THE NOISE LEVEL WAS AT 10,000 DECIBELS. Granted, that could be appealing to some but any table reservation should know that going in.
Food was great - I’ve been there many times and I love the atmosphere.
Anniversary dinner. First time. The room is gorgeous! We loved the Sunda Moriawase sashimi. Beautiful presentation. Delicious. The table next to us even commented. We also ordered the Rainbow Roll and that was disappointing. My wife and I thought it was dry and wasn't of the quality we would have expected. Our service was good. We appreciated the free dessert cupcake. It was a bit sad. Believe me, I wanted to rave about this restaurant. Honest.
Lovely ambience with wonderful food! Would definitely go again! Highly recommend!
Excellent culinary adventure. Such a treat. Great service too.
Great service and great food. Have already recommended this wonderful dining experience to family and friends.
Always a great experience at Sunda! We had a group of 10. The wait staff did a good job recommending sharing portions and the chef accommodated custom portions for the number of people we had. Will definitely keep coming back.
Memorable; definitely worth returning even though there are so many options in Chicago. Friendly, helpful staff; great service - attentive without being intrusive. Food was delish!!! So many great options worth trying
My aunt was in town from Boston, and had heard about Sunda. We went for lunch on a Friday and had terrible service. It was very disappointing and I don’t think I will return. They can’t handle a lunch rush and should have had more staff. We didn’t have a server come to our table for 15 minutes.
Wonderful in all ways
Cool place. Food and service were good. Great vibe.
Great server! Tasty food, quick serving
Sunda never misses a beat when it comes to Asian fusion cuisine. I made the right choice in bringing my visiting friend here. Will definitely be back again.
How have we missed this place? We go out all the time as we live in the Lincoln Park neighborhood but somehow Sunda never got on our radar. It sure is now! We are not easily impressed as there are so many good restaurants in the area, but this was a really great experience. Our server, Nolan, was excellent. Ask for him. Treated us as if we were the only ones in the restaurant. We don't usually rave about food, but I have to here. You have to try the Oxtail Pot Stickers. More oxtail than pot sticker, which is very unusual. Then try the Seafood dynamite Crispy Rice, Sunrise Suchi and Red Dragon Suchi. All recommended by Nolan and he nailed it. Perfect timing as well to get to the theater. Heading back soon! And much thanks to Kevin, the manager, for his hospitality. Hopefully we can try the new location in Nashville in a couple of weeks.
Great experience overall!
I Love Sunda! Great food and atmosphere! I would recommend going to any friend!
Waited 10mins to be served. Food was average. Brunch was pricey
Loved the entire experience! My family enjoyed the food and service so much that we’re going to make this an Easter tradition.
Great food, awesome ambiance, superior service! Recommended!
First time and the food was great. Big selection and the taste was fabulous. We will go back. Service was great, was an enjoyable dinner!
Always classic and phenomenal- I’ve always had an amazing experience whether it be brunch or dinner.
Sunda had incredible food, I ate an array of items from the menu and loved every one of them. The service was quick and professional. Their cocktails are worth the buy and the overall ambiance was great if you’re looking for a packed but energetic surrounding.
It was very hard to hear so if you’re wanting a more intimate setting maybe choose an off time for Sunda.
Had the most amazing time at Sunda. Visiting from NYC - I really really hope they open up one there!!!! Everything was amazing from the service to the food. My boyfriend has a gluten allergy and this may have been the most accommodating restaurant that we have been to. Mel was our server and she was absolutely amazing - honestly made our experience so great. We got the spicy edamame, waygu crispy rice, spicy “tail of two tuna” roll, and the panang chicken. AMAZING!! Chicken is spicy so beware if that’s not your thing. Place had such good vibes - next time we’re in Chicago we’ll def be back.
