Summer Shack Cambridge Ratings and Reviews
We go here a lot. The service is always friendly. The food is always good. Last time out we split a number of starters and it was a fun meal. Tried the grilled clams for the first time and they were outstanding. Hope to go back when they have a smashing crab night.
We ordered the BGTY bluefish special which we always do when it’s available. We enjoyed the meal. We told the waiter it was tasty but not bluefish and had way too many bones. We were then told it was their mistake that they served us mackeral and they took the price off our bill. Mackeral is an oily fish high in omega-3 oils, but it’s not bluefish.
We were a party of 6 and were seated promptly. It was not too crowded that night so the noise level was moderate. The staff service as always was outstanding. Had some fun with the staff recalling the drinks and the food when the location was the Aku Aku. The fish, as expected, was delicious and prepared/cooked properly.
We've been to Summer Shack many times, but the last 2 times have been awful. Probably enough not to return for awhile. Came with my inlaws they ordered steamers and oysters and I ordered soup. Soup never came. Asked server twice, she explained it was 'coming out' well, it was the same time as my dinner. Not what I expected. She didnt seem very concerned or apologetic. She delivered it with the manager, who was a woman, very nice. Manager apologized offered free dessert and no charge for the soup. We had trouble getting server to clear empty plates off table, she never offered refills on our drinks. It was just totally disappointing. I'd imagine the soup was prepared and sitting in a pot- easy enough for her or someone to go tot he kitchen, ladle out a cup and bring it out with in 20 minutes of ordering. Steamers and oysters took more effort yet arrived sooner. Excuse was kitchen was backed up-- same as last time. If you are a major restaurant that can't plan for Saturday nights, I'd assume you have a mgmt problem not a kitchen problem.
I am never disappointed with Summer Shack. Our table of 8 ordered 7 different mains. Everyone was VERY pleased with the tastes and quality, 2 meals were given a "best ever" rating! It's not cheap but it is worth the price if you like fresh seafood and sophisticated recipes!
Have been here many times and consistently order the same meal (wood grilled lobster). Unfortunately, first order came out very dry and just not a good tasting lobster (rubbery and weird taste). I am not one to send back food; however, it was not cheap and people at my table confirmed my assessment. Our waiter could not have been nicer and very accommodating. However, his manager felt it necessary to come over and question my decision to send back and 'wanted to make sure I'd eat it if they were to prepare another lobster'. No apology just an attitude that I was trying to rip them off. This could be taken two ways and to me it was an offensive question and implied I was not genuine. My fiancé's take was he wanted to make sure I would be satisfied if they did prepare a new lobster. Regardless, a seasoned manager should have recognized I took his approach the wrong way and backed off. He didn't and defended his approach and asked 'had I had a wood grilled lobster in the past and maybe my expectation of how it should be cooked was off'. It started to turn into an unpleasant experience and my dinner partners were all set to eat. I went along with his questions and, it appeared, begrudgingly he would put in a new order. Again the server was fantastic and it was the only reason I didn't raise 'a stink' given how poorly I felt the manager handled the situation. A new manager stopped by while the second lobster was being prepared and she was super nice. She actually brought out the food and came back to check to see how it was. It was perfectly cooked and tasted like a normal lobster. Another guest in our party ordered a baked stuffed lobster and she didn't like the way it was cooked either but didn't want to bring more attention to the table. I have never sent back food at Summershack so to assume I was 'just not going to be happy' was a poor decision on his part. It will be a while until we go back and pay good money to be treated poorly.
Only real disappointment was the after work group of about 50 people boozing it up and being loud and not separated by any noise baffling screens from the main part of the restaurant. They should have been in a separate function room away from the main dining room. My guests loved the food as I did.
Sadly, Summer Shack seems to be slipping. Maybe it was showing up on Sunday, but things just were not as good as in the past. For the prices charged, we expect superb execution, and didn't get it.
High point was the oysters -- fresh, tasty, and a bargain (they were offering 2 for price of 1).
But we ordered one of our favs -- the spicy calamari -- they brought the regular by mistake, and it was too heavily battered and overcooked to dark brown.
Many of the dishes were oversalted -- the crab cakes so much so that we had to reject them. Since the mix is prepared in advance, they did remove the charge from the tab.
And the menu of fresh fish offerings was much shorter than usual (maybe because Sunday).
Service - friendly and smiling, but screwed up the calamari order.
We will probably try again on a weeknight -- I don't easily give up on an old friend -- but it was disappointing.
Haven't been here for about 15 years. Was in Cambridge and noticed it on Open Table... glad I did. Still exactly the same since it opened. The surrounding area has been developed with buildings everywhere, but Summer Shack remains the same... an excellent spot to enjoy a casual meal in a fun atmosphere. We passed on the lobsters with the seemingly high prices. The rest of the menu is very reasonable for what you get.
Remembering the excellent chicken, ordered a piece as an app... the shrimp cocktail was also great.
My brothers fish dish was awesome... very new orleans... with rice, fried okra, fried green tomatoes. My fried shrimp was very good.
Service was friendly and efficient.
I have been to this restaurant many times, and have always been happy with the food. This time, however, I was not happy. The swordfish and kale dish was heavily over-salted, and the "corn and lobster ragout" did not appear to have any lobster in it, and was loaded with potatoes.
We have always enjoyed Summer Shack as it was my son's favorite place, but we have not been there in quite a while. Surf and Turf was on the mind of the person we were celebrating, and Summer Shack came to mind. We were very happy to return after a few years of being away!
This restaurant has a very casual atmosphere and seemed to be a go to place for groups with large numbers of young children. Given the price of most dishes, I was expecting a place a little less run down. Not a place for a relaxing romantic dinner. Music too loud and acoustics echoed.
The scrod dish we both had was exceptional however. Very fresh, nice balance of flavors, sufficient portion.
