Boston’s best and freshest oysters. Try the Canadian Red Snow crabs baked . Amazing!
We came here with a group to celebrate my birthday. We love seafood and the menu is very extensive. My 80 year old in-laws love it as much as my 3 kids under age 9. It’s such a great place for families!
My wife had an excellent warm lobster roll. I had fried clams and French fries. I had to send them back because they weren’t hot. They then were very good when they came back. The ambience of dining outdoors in a parking lot left a bit to be desired.
We visit my family in Medford regularly from the Bay Area of CA. We always have made it a point to eat at Summer Shack in Cambridge and have always had a very good experience. Unfortunately our dinner there last night will be our last. Though the service wasn’t great I won’t highlight that because we recognize that they are dealing with staffing issues post pandemic.
The food, which is always our focus, was extremely disappointing. The fried clams were soggy and terribly unappealing; the blue fish itself was very good but it was served on Luke warm at best rice and the fish stew broth was extremely salty and not edible.
On top of that prices were extremely high for what we had.
So sad the the quality has suffered so much.
I was pleasantly surprised to find seasonal soft-shelled crabs on the menu 3 ways. The requested sweet potato fries were cool when my meal arrived and salt and pepper weren't offered. Last time, an assortment of little packs was placed on the table.
Haddock with mushroom butter sauce was to die for. Great service. Great fried calimari.
The food was delicious and service was excellent. It was warm inside as the a!/c was not strong enough th or a heat wave.
Good raw bar. We enjoyed a dozen oysters and a raw bar tower. Server was attentive and personable
Fantastic oysters. We enjoyed the lobster mac and cheese and the sushi. Teh fisherman stew was really bland and the shrimp scampi was unremarkable.
Exceptional and outstanding in every way. Taste and quality of food is better than any other restaurant. Service is top of the class.
Don't let the casual look mislead you, Summer Shack's best attribute is their attention to detail on seafood preparation. They understand the value of properly cooked calamari and and just right fish doneness. Lobster feature prominently with several preparations with one version paying homage to Aku-Aku, the previous tiki restaurant in the location. Instead of clam chowder, try the Bermuda fish chowder which transport you to Hamilton with every spoonful. The raw bar is always fresh, but during some seasons the choices are limited. They also have a solid take on fried chicken for the land lovers and a kids menu.
Perfect food excellent
We were a party of 7, which is often hard for a restaurant to handle. But not at the Summer Shack. The restaurant specializes in seafood, which is reliably fresh and delicious. We had orders of oysters, mussels, and calamari for the table. Then each person selected their own entree. Raves all around. We didn’t have any children with us, but sometimes do, and it’s not a problem at all.
Stuffed lobster and drinks could have been better but not a bad spot for an impulse stop
Restarting life in public post Covid. Returning to my old favorites as they open up. Summer Shack did not disappoint.
To begin, the service was great. The food options are plentiful. The gulf shrimp, bluefish and scampi were delicious. Accepts reservations, will definitely return.
Great outdoor accommodations
waiter Sean was great, Sociable, comical and attentive. We felt safe which I have not gone out much since Covid hit. The prices were a bit steep, and the portions are half the size they were prior to covid.
The Cambridge Summer Shack is the original -- it has a big open feel to it, which I find just fine. Seafood is of consistently good quality, as are the oysters/raw bar.
Ate outside; it was quiet and pleasant. Sushi was great.
They missed the boat during my last visit. Arrived in the early afternoon at my scheduled time and was able to obtain a seat outdoors right away. After that, things went downhill quickly. We ordered shrimp cocktail and oysters. After 30 minutes of waiting, and getting ready to just walk out and go, we had to flag down a waiter to ask what happened to our order. Shortly afterwards our oysters arrived and they were enjoyable. The shrimp however had to be returned as it was inedible, had a yellow discoloration , and the shells had not been removed. Based upon how badly things were going we asked for our check and were told the manager would come out to see us. We were not charged for the shrimp (which we did not eat except for one bite), they comped our beverage, and most tellingly, the manager never showed up. After dining there dozens of times over the years, based upon my last few visits I don't see myself returning.
Perfect meal. Amazing oysters. Great cocktails.
Food was underwhelming! The hand made chips were hard as a rock, and the lobster rolls do not compare well to other high end restaurants, not to lobster rolls served here in the pre pandemic past. I have eaten her often but not sure I will be back. Oh, and the crepe brûlée had clearly been sitting in a refrigerator for days, and while I am not sure it can fairly be be called stale, it was!
Sushi now available and it was excellent, as was the fish and chips. Dining on the patio was comfortable, service friendly and accommodating. We’re never disappointed in our Summer Shack meal!
This is our celebration spot - we have been coming here for decades. We love the pan-roasted lobster, it never disappoints. Tonight's was especially delicious! And the service was spot-on. Highly recommended.
Always outstanding seafood, prompt service, and a real value. They treat families with affection.
No complaints about the food however service was not desirable. Server was less than attentive. Water was never refilled (I had to get up and ask someone for a refill because server was nowhere to be found) and second round of drinks never offered. When we asked for the check the server came back and placed the check on the table, I said thank you and she literally said NOTHING! Honestly that is the only reason I am writing this! I’ve been in the restaurant business my entire life (still am) and was so offended that I was the one that said thank you and she didn’t even have the decency to say a word to me, just walked away. Wow. With all that being said, I am fully aware of the struggles that restaurants are facing now (like I said, I’m in the business) but there is NO excuse for treating guests like this especially when their paycheck relied on the service provided to the guest....
Outstanding Lobster Roll
The tables were spaced out and felt fine when eating. The food was very good. The service was also very good. Drinks were excellent
Lobster roll meat was plentiful, roll was dry and overwhelming. Very dark inside, black walls and ceiling didn’t help.
I’m a big fan of Summer Shack but on this last occasion, there were some flaws. The food was good, but the timing was off. We were a table of 6 and there was a big lag when the entrees arrived with 3 of getting our meals and a long wait, maybe 5 minutes or so before the rest arrived so that the ones who got our food early, we had cold dishes. Furthermore, the servers, bussers, snd runners were clearly overburdened. We understand the issues involved in these pandemic times, but restaurant owners need to remember that for many of us, we’ve had a year to hone our cooking skills and after a year of this pandemic, restaurants should be in the groove. Telling diners that we have only 90 minutes to eat and go is akin to telling us to get in and get F out. Not welcoming and anxiety inducing when you’re coming up against the clock and entrees haven’t arrived yet. Seriously, I get that the CDC or the State of MA “recommends” 90 minutes, but it seems restaurant owners have too enthusiastically embraced this hideous terminology. It’s not at all welcoming and I’m less and less inclined to go out to eat. Number 1, eating out is expensive but I’m ok with spending the money if the experience matches the price. To be treated as if the patron is there for you and not the other way around is a dangerous way to do business. When a party comes in for an 8:00 reservation on a regular Sunday night, is telling us we have 90 minutes to eat and get the F out really the most welcoming strategy? Especially when you know you are overburdened and delays are bound to happen? No, it’s not a good strategy. It’s not welcoming and needs to go away. As soon as I’m hit with those words, I feel that my presence is unwelcome. I love Summer Shack, but you along with all other restaurants hoping to get my business really need to put the customer first and remember going out to eat should be a treat and we should be treated as if you want us there. Telling us we have 90 minutes is not the way to go.
The best lobster dinner is JASPER'S FAMOUS PAN ROASTED LOBSTER with corn on the cob!!! Great food and great service.
Amazing. Thankful for the accommodations.
Always a great menu, great fish, great preparation.
We took advantage of the nice weather and enjoyed the outdoor dining. The oysters were fresh and excellent, the jumbo shrimp was excellent, the fried clams were excellent and our server was excellent. Only thing that was bad was the Bloody Mary which was made from a horrible mix and came with a celery stalk that was no more than two inches long.
Some advice for the restaurant:
(1) It's still an active pandemic. Don't require outdoor dining guests with reservations to go inside to confirm they've arrived.
(2) For outside dining, use a weighted display for the QR code so that the wind does not blow it away. It can also be used to be placed atop the check when it arrives. We noticed four different tables have their checks blown away.
(3) Use a better Bloody Mary mix and the celery should be at least the length of the glass and not less than two inches long.
We had a fun reunion dinner at Summer Shack. Because of Covid restrictions, the place seemed unusually uncrowded and quiet - not bustling like it has in the past, but we could talk easily. Crab cakes and the tuna burger were very tasty. The one dish that was mediocre was the grilled shrimp and scallops dish. Very small portion of fish and dried out. Big pile of potatoes and broccoli to fill the plate. Calamari and cornbread snacks were delicious. We all took a lot of food home with us, so could have shared some plates easily. Overall would recommend the restaurant but choose your food carefully.
One of our favorite spots! The Service was amazing, the food even better!
Food and service were excellent! Each dish arrived hot and made to order. Our server also made sure we had drink refills before having to ask for them.
Great food & service! We'll definitely visit and recommend!
I really wanted a steamed lobster! This was the best lobster I’ve had in the longest time. You deserve to try it :)
