Sugar and Smoke is a very nice venue the staff was courteous, knowledgeable,,and attentive,food was excellent and the drinks were great also I definitely plan on attending again.
Excellent service... our server was Excellent... absolutely loved the food! Brisket... garlic mashed potatoes...lump crabmeat very tasty!
The bartender had no personality and the drinks were terrible and way over priced. I think $40.00 for an ok bottle of wine is absurd. My dinner was so fatty I could only eat about half of it. Very very disappointed.
I would recommend this place because its beautiful. But our drinks took so long to get to our table. Our server sat at the table and chatted with us most of the time , and did not tell us the gratuity was included in the bill. Our food was terrible. I think they need to find a great chef and waiters that earn the gratuity they receive and this place would be perfect.
We went for Father’s Day. The restaurant was nearly empty but had to wait 10 mins for someone to seat us. We had a broken chair and the opportunity to view the dirty brown rug that is now black but also desperately needed vacuumed. The Shrimp and Grit was terrible - grits arrived cold, no taste, appeared thrown together, and shrimp was tough. A table nearby left their dried chicken and waffles on the table.
The menu was somewhat different than what is online. There were only 4 other parties while we were there, so it was quiet and the waitstaff were attentive to all guests. We were told there were no biscuits available (as well as the biscuits and gravy removed from the menu) and since this is a restaurant with “southern” fare, that was not good. In the end the biscuits were available, but the beignets we wanted with coffee to finish the meal were also unavailable. The shrimp and grits, cheese omelette and bacon were good and the maple sausage was great. Service was very pleasant but the kitchen was much slower than you’d expect with so few guests.
Great food and service!
First time at this restaurant. Although the service was slow, we were not in a hurry. The crab bisque
was good, not outstanding. We shared the pecan salad which is enough for two and it was wonderful.
My better half had the shrimp and grits which needed more seasoning (salt and pepper). It was good
after adding the s and p. I ordered the smoked brisket which was delicious. The only drawback was
that at least 1/3 of the portion was gristle and fat. I understand that brisket is a fatty cut of beef, but that was too much waste and should not have even been on the plate. I would not order it again.
Pulled pork was way over cooked & Greens was way spicy, My sister salmon was dry no type of dressing & didn't hv any of the drinks their website
We were really looking forward to trying Sugar and Smoke having read and heard about it when it opened. While we saw comments that service can be slow, we were hopeful that by now it would have smoothed out its operations. That was not the case. While the food was generally pretty good, the service was the worst I have experienced...ever. Making matters worse is that we went with friends who had splurged for a babysitter for their two young children. What a mistake! We were at the restaurant for 3.5 hours, during which time we were not able to order a second round of drinks, did not have anyone check on us, and waited over 30 minutes just to get the bill. At one point as our server walked by, she apologized for the delay with our food explaining that they did not expect to be so busy. Yet there were only 5 tables; the front dining room and bar were completely empty. One table had to send its food back and we heard another had two of its meals comped for the delay. Southern cuisine would be a wonderful addition to Pittsburgh’s food scene but BUYER BEWARE: Keep looking.
Earlier in the evening there were families dining, so it was noisy.
Our server was not as knowledgeable as we would have liked about the drink menu/bar. I remain stunned that a Southern US doesn’t have sweet tea st the ready.
Our entrees come out staggered.
The beignets, though!
So yummy!!!! The Hot Chicken sandwich and the Shrimp Po Boy are a must!!!! Will be back soon!
It took over 20 minutes to have our order taken, over an hour for our food to arrive, and our server had to be requested as she was no where to be found, though she was a very pleasant person. On a good note, the late drinks were delicious, as was the seafood gumbo. We had to watch people , who showed up a half hour after us, receive their food before we even got our appetizers. Over a hundred dollars, not very well spent.
Crab hush puppies were good. Watermelon cocktail was the best. The day we went they didnt have greens. Beware if you order chicken and waffles. You will be served a waffle with biter syrup and 3 breaded chicken wings for 16.00! Yikes. All together the food was ok but the prices were high for what you get and the menu is misleading.
Food was awesome. 5 people had 4 different meals and all were liked.
Server was awesome. Speed of Service was a bit slow but not horrible.
Great experience. I had the cajun salmon and it was delicious. We were a party of 4 and it was our first time. There were no complaints.
Service was extremely slow. Arrived at 1:47 pm for 2 pm reservation. Received food at 3 p.m. Family friendly atmosphere. It was Mother’s Day and children were there. It’s difficult for adults to wait an entire hour, but impossible for kids. Servers were pleasant, but they can do little to fix a kitchen problem.
Finally got our meals and the food was delicious. Perhaps should have offered appetizers for such a long wait. Was warned that service was extremely slow from previous dinners.
Decor was nice, great ambiance, but service detracts from those positive attributes. I would go there again, but it the experience is the same, would cross it off my list.
Went there for Mother’s Day and it was really good food and atmosphere
The service was really slow on a Sunday for brunch and we were seated with no menus. The restaurant was not busy but our food quality wasn't that great. My shrimp and grits had big lumps in it and was served with a runny tomato sauce without any southern or Cajun flavors. NOT what I expected from a southern themed restaurant.

My recommendation is that you avoid this establishment at all costs. The food is actually decent, but not extraordinary, but the service is truly abysmal. You can get much better value for the dollar many other places
The service, drinks, and desserts were outstanding!. We had the brisket and my husband's portion was a bit fatty. There was a jazz band playing downstairs which competed with the music that was playing upstairs in the dining room. We would visit again.
We had dinner in the Bar and we also were there for the entertainment in the lower level, nice evening!
Michael was a great waiter however, the kitchen was not so good with our order. We did not get served until an hour and half after we ordered. The food was delicious though. Kitchen management needs addressed.
Great experience for my wife and I prior to show in downtown. Kiev was a fantastic server and was extremely knowledgeable and pleasant. The owners were warm and friendly and very welcoming. The ambiance is beautiful and the food was over the top. Recommend anything with their smoke seasoning. Can't wait to do Brunch next!
The brisket was delicious and the service was so great. This place seems like a well-kept secret!
The menu had some interesting options, so we thought we’d check it out. There is a small off street parking lot, which was nice for a Friday night in Bloomfield. We sat in a dining room next to the bar, but in a separate room. The piped-in music was loud enough to make conversation difficult. The decor was nondescript, but we weren’t there because the room looked nice! The room was about half filled, and it seemed that everyone else had already ordered, or was already eating. A bottle of water was brought to the table, which was nice since our server was often MIA. We ordered an appetizer and two entrees. The app came out in less than ten minutes, and was fine. Nothing over the top. Then, we waited over an hour for our entrees, a dinner salad and barbecue sandwich. During this time, we saw tables around us flip, and the new diners ordered and were served. After about 40 minutes, we were told that there was a mixup, and that our order would be out in a few minutes. Twenty minutes later, we were served. The sandwich was acceptable, but lacking in much flavor. The “brioche” bun was unimpressive and the fries seemed to be from frozen, not freshly cut. The salad was pretty good, and the beets seemed fresh, but there were a few bits of slimy lettuce in the mix. It looked like greens from a bag. The grilled chicken also seemed to have come straight from Restaurant Depot.
There was nothing about the meal that should have taken that long, even if it had to have been made twice. Our server did apologize a couple of times, saying that as she’d told us, there was a mixup. Given the extreme wait, I think they should have offered a free app it dessert. While we would have refused either, some effort on the part of the restaurant to make up for the long wait would have been the thing to do.
Would we go back? Probably not. Lackluster service and unreasonable wait aside, there are so many other dining options in the city, I think we would try them first.
The restaurant has great potential, but definitely need to work out some kinks. We had a later reservation at 8pm and they were out of the brisket, pulled pork, and meatloaf. The service was pretty slow, but the waitress was very nice and apologetic. We could tell she was working hard and was not her fault. Additionally, the owner happened to be outside and helped us with parking when we arrived. After circling a few times trying to find something, this definitely was the highlight. Great people and friendly service goes a long way. We tried all the apps and they were delicious. I just hope they are able to work out the kinks. If you go, just try to have patience from the get go and your experience will be much nicer.
I hate writing this kind of review because I was really looking forward to this place. Nothing went right almost the entire evening. We had a 730pm dinner reservation on Saturday evening. We were told there would be a 10 to 15 minute wait, but there were empty tables? After being seated and placing our order, we waited about 30 minutes for our appetizers to arrive. Fried Green tomatoes and soup. We then waited another hour 15 minutes for our meal. Fried Chicken and Shrimp & Grits?? Again not very complicated. Food was okay, but not worth the price. Service was really slow. Everyone was nice, but we did not expect to be at this place for almost 3 hours..
There was only one server in the back room, where (2) we were seated. It took forever to get a drink and food. True, this was a Saturday night, but I just think they should be able to handle a "full house."
Some pretty significant staffing/wait issues — not exaggerating when we were served more than two hours after ordering - I understand Saturday gets busy, but this was pretty complicated. We appreciated our server throughout.
I would have preferred some type of sauce or juice on my brisket. It was too dry otherwise.
Great food service could be a little faster but worth the wait
I ordered chicken and waffles. It was LITERALLY 3 fried chicken wings (smaller than KFC) on a waffle for 16 dollars. The fried green tomatoes were soggy and collared greens tasted like a whole box of salt got dumped on it. We were excited to try this but will never go back!
Being vegetarian I had limited choices but the Chef was quite accommodating and made a dish for me that was just delicious. Staff are friendly and attentive.....love this place and going again tonight.
The greeter took us to our table and was friendly - made some suggestions for us. We opted for the crab hushpuppies, brisket, mac & cheese, collard greens, and cornbread. The hushpuppies were decent, but not exceptional and probably not worth the cost, but we held hope that the rest of the meal would be really good. When our meals came out, the brisket was very dry as was the mac & cheese. The collard greens had no pieces of bacon in it aside from one tiny piece that looked like a bacon bit. We mentioned our concerns to our waited who apologized but didn't offer to do anything to make anything better. The waiter was nice, but not very effective with service. We have no plans of returning.
I went to has late lunch and had the restaurant almost to myself. I gave with a 4 star instead of a five for the food because I was not fond of the beignets. They were not bad, but I have been to Cafe Du Monde, so I have high standards. The Brisket was wonderful and the greens were pretty good (not enough liquid or turkey). I should have asked for vinegar and they would have been great.
Went for Sunday brunch. Wait staff was hosting and bussing tables, which meant the service was horrible. We had fried green tomatoes, chicken and waffles, and the brisket hash. Tomatoes were soggy. The chicken was three wings that were all skin and bone, and the waffle was mealy. The potatoes and peppers in the hash tasted frozen, and the brisket, which was allegedly slow cooked for 19 hours, wasn't even as good as the beef we make in our Crockpot. Needless to say, our first trip was also our last.
