Succotash - Penn Quarter DC
SUCCOTASH is named after the classic dish that has been a longstanding staple of the Southern table. While many know “Succotash” when they see it, the dish has been interpreted, modified and passed from generation to generation for centuries. While Succotash between families will share similarities, each family’s recipe is deeply personal and reminiscent of those special suppers that brings kin together. Our “Succotash” is special to us and we invite you to experience the South from our point of view.

Food wasn’t great. Not sure if it was the time of day or day of the week but wasn’t my favorite
The chicken (with my chicken the manager was gracious to have it replaced; although I told my server that it was fine, it was really no different. I recalled that the chicken was better when I first dined there this past fall, but now things seemed to have changed. Maybe a new team of cooks are there, but overall I was slightly underwhelmed. The staff was very hospitable.
The food was delicious and the atmosphere great. We weren’t rushed through our meal, which was nice. It was very busy, though, so service did take a little while to get going. Still, loved it and would go back!
This grand styled dining room will be long remembered for the genuine friendliness of the entire staff. And it’s superb and charming manager ,Victoria, could not have been more attentive and caring.
The southern accented menu was great. We had good chicken and waffles, great catfish, and a wonderful surprise: steak salad- excellent!
With the great service, enjoyable food and a grand space dining space, I do not think one could go wrong with Succatash.
The food is amazing!! Perfect!!
Some times less is more. Fry the chicken less hard and less sauce on the shrimp and grits.
Great food until the dessert. The “chocolate bourbon pecan pie” was a tiny, stale tart that tasted months old. Very surprising given how good the apps/entrees were. Not sure where they get the desserts but it’s time for a change
We have found a new favorite! Food was amazing and well-portioned- not too big, not too small. The restaurant has elegant but fun decor and a great bar. Our waiter was delightful and very pleasant although service overall was a bit slow. The catfish (entree) and smoked sausage appetizer were delicious. We will definitely be back!
Went here for a late Valentine’s Day dinner (Friday night). Our reservation was at 8, we were seated around 8:15 or so which was fine since the place was packed. When the server came to our table, my boyfriend ordered a drink first and the server said something snarky like “women always order first”. Needless to say, my boyfriend did not appreciate that comment since I was still looking at the menu anyways. The server by the end of the night won us back overs I’m sure he was just stressed from the amount of people in the restaurant. It was about 9 before we actually ordered our entrees. We ordered hush puppies and corn bread, both were hard, dry and not very flavorful. I got the fried chicken and waffles, great chicken, horrible waffles. Literally just two waffles, no syrup or sauce? Which was weird. His shrimp and grits were the most unusual thing I’ve ever seen. Soupy grits, Chewy kale. The only thing good about this restaurant was the ambiance, it’s very beautiful and clean inside. Overall I was not thrilled with the experience especially when i saw that we paid over 120$ for our meals. I have no problem paying for a good dinner. That was not one of them. I was just expecting more from a chef that has notoriety.
The restaurant was beautiful. The cocktails were great. The service was terrible. Everything took too long. No one come to our table for at least 20 minutes after we were seated. We made a reservation well in advance and still were seated at a table right next to the bathroom in a area every server had to walk past. Many on them bumped into my wife while passing, yet we still had bad wait times. The food was on the salty side.
Over all I would only return to the bar for a happy hour. The food was good, but not worth sitting through the terrible service. This place should be good but just can’t get it together
I thought the food was just ok. Halibut was not bad but the Etoufee left much to be desired compared to what I have had in New Orleans.
Succotash has become our annual Valentine Day restaurant. We enjoy the ambience, it is upbeat and fun, yet when dining upstairs you can have a quiet conversation.
The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and not over/under table side present. For my husband, the test is the water glass - is it maintained without asking? Upon being seated, Succotash provides two bottles of water, regular and sparkling. Staff use these to maintain our glasses, and replaced the bottles as they were emptied. My husband loves this.
The food is excellent. My duck breast was cooked to perfection. My husband had haddock and crawfish etouffee. The haddock was moist and tender.
For dessert we shared the Chocolate Waffle -yum!
Went there for Valentine’s Day
We had a tremendous Valentine meal at Succotash.
Everything was hitting on all cylinders. I was amazed at how everyone smiled, everyone checked on every table, our server, Solo, was right up there in the ranking with some of the best service we have ever had.
The food was absolutely wonderful. We started with the cornbread muffins and the pulled bbq mushroom dish. BOOM!!! A little mostoco wine from the dessert menu as suggested by Solo, and OMG!
I could drag this review on for a few more paragraphs but for what reason.
5 stars go there!!
This place is overrated according to me. The place itself is beautiful but the food was not that great at all.
I love the food at this restaurant - and the service is impeccable. I'm a particular fan of the fried chicken sandwich it's my one indulgence.
I prefer sitting in one of the booths - they seem to be a bit quieter than sitting at one of the tables but a (slightly) higher noise level is the price I have to pay for that sandwich!
Lunch was to be a special event for my daughter and Succotash made it special from the service to the food!
Enjoyed dinner before the Caps game on Monday. Food and service never disappoint! Shared cornbread app- a must every time! We each had the pimento cheeseburger with bacon jam. I was nervous for the bacon jam but it worked so well with the burger! The hostess was very sweet and welcoming. Our server was very friendly and enjoyed sharing some of her favorites from the bar and dinner menu.
Excellent menu!! Food was outstanding.
Went for our one year first date anniversary. Food is delicious, drinks are outstanding and the service is perfect.
What could possibly be lacking in a Southern-style restaurant with 85 kinds of bourbon available? Nothing, it turns out. This beautiful restaurant in a remodeled, stately old building was a last minute choice after seeing its ad in a playbill at Ford's Theater, and we had a wonderful sampler dinner, titled "Taste of the South," served by an efficient and knowledgeable waiter. The first courses included tiny corn muffins served with homemade apple butter and a fried green tomato salad that was refreshing and seasoned just right. There followed courses of spice-rubbed spareribs that fell off the bone (accompanied by wonderfully spicy, acidic collards), fried catfish with spicy aioli, and fried chicken and waffles. Everything was skillfully prepared, spiced perfectly, and accompanied by inventive sauces, relishes, and side dishes. The finishing touch was a dessert plate of chocolate/pecan tarts, pecan cookies, and fresh berries. It was a completely satisfying tour through modern, Southern cuisine that we highly recommend.
Desi was amazing! Our party enjoyed her suggestions and she was delightful as our Ambassador to Succotash! It made my brothers birthday gather a great experience!
The food never disappoint!
Delicious food, as usual. Lovely service, too. Such a pretty place.
Our server was the best! I can’t remember his name but he guaranteed he was going to take care of us and he definitely did! Busy Sunday brunch but seated right away. A great dining experience!
Our dinner and service in the restaurant was outstanding. The only negative part of the evening was the bar. we had a cocktail there first. The bar was full of dirty glasses and dishes and it was hard to get a bartenders' attention to get served.
Real nice atmosphere good food took an hour and 45 minutes though to get our food but will try it again
I really, really loved the ambience and the service which was impeccable from the host, to the bar server to our dining server. We had the Belle's Punch which was soooo good!! For dinner, we had several appetizers , a side of succotash curry, dirty chicken and hummingbird cake. The succotash curry is to die for. I wasn't crazy about the dirty chicken but my dining partner loved it. Warning: the slice of hummingbird cake is large enough for at least 2. Overall, a great dining experience and will go there again.
Phenomenal brunch spot!
Loved the service, very hospitable and welcoming. Even brought out a little dessert for my mothers birthday. It was unfortunate that the food was not too great.
I thought the food was mediocre
It's wonderful to have a taste of the South in DC. The service was excellent and the food, very flavorful. The only downside was that it was rather loud and difficult to have a conversation among two people - maybe there is something they can do to absorb the sound. Otherwise, it's a wonderful establishment and I'll be back.
The food was excellent! We started with the friend green tomatoes, then moved to the following entrees: the chicken and waffles and the fried catfish, both of which were well prepared and tasted great.
We shared the hummingbird cake which was just ok. It seemed like it was taken directly out of the refrigerator. Therefore, it was too cold and dried out instead of moist.
So amazing. Hush puppies had a nice kick, corn bread was great, Mac n cheese was tasty. But chicken and waffles was the best. Omg. Ate too much but so worth it. Restaurant is beautiful and although packed with people could talk with folks at table easily. Service great. No complaints only complements. Will come back again and will recommend to friends.
My friend had the short rib. Wow, huge portion and yummy! The hot fired oysters are a must. Nice variety of cocktails and wines. Only negative is that is very loud
Had another amazing lunch at Succotash on Tuesday. In addition to the delicious fried green tomatoes, smoked wings, and catfish, the service was PHENOMENAL. Exactly what you want when your friend is in town visiting.
overall was good with 2 exceptions - One of the popular cocktails we ordered they said they were out of. we then chose something else and it took forever to get that drink. we had already had our appetizers and entree was served and we were still waiting for the drink. our server said they were looking downstairs for a new bottle as what we chose the 2nd time apparently they had none on the bar.
the second thing was I had the salmon - although was good was very salty.
Overall, beautiful restaurant and probably would give it another try.
Service was lacking. Poor menu knowledge and explanation made ordering difficult. As a chef I was very disappointed in the delivery of such amazing food. The table of unimpressed business men getting “complimentary” dishes and desserts left and right made it disheartening as a person who would’ve enjoyed the opportunity and will probably not get the chance to eat this food again.Overall not pleased with our dining experience.
