American
A progressive perspective of classic Southern favorites. James Beard Award nominee Edward Lee brings his Korean roots and Southern repertoire to a soulful Southern menu.

SUCCOTASH is named after the classic dish that has been a longstanding staple of the Southern table. While many know “Succotash” when they see it, the dish has been interpreted, modified and passed from generation to generation for centuries. While Succotash between families will share similarities, each family’s recipe is deeply personal and reminiscent of those special suppers that brings kin together. Our “Succotash” is special to us and we invite you to experience the South from our point of view.

Great food and the service was wonderful. We ordered a lot as we wanted to try different things as it all sounded delicious. Of course it was and we couldn't finish it all so we took the leftovers away. Would definitely come back.

My experience at Succotash for brunch this past weekend was overall a great experience. Our server was very attentive and food arrived hot and quickly. My only negative was that I ordered Chicken and Waffles and was disappointed that there were only two little pieces of waffles on the plate. Probably would not order the Chicken and Waffles again.

When we arrived, host informed us heat was out in restaurant but they were giving complimentary hot drinks while the tried to fix it. We asked for a high chair fit my son. It took 15 minutes from being seated before a waiter cane over and we got the high chair. Took another 10-15 to get any coffee, and it was warm, not hot. Sticky buns were good, but an extra order was brought to table and left while they figured it out and then was taken away. Deviled eggs were fine, but not worth the price. Shrimp and grits were bland and very wet. Too many extra toppings that made the dish inedible. Stomach was upset for several hours afterwards. Wife’s biscuits and gravy was bland and biscuits were rock hard. Mac and cheese was good, but almost too thick. Waiter was hard to find and never brought check it cleared plates. We had to ask for check after more than 20 minutes if no one touching their food. Restaurant comped everything but mains to apologize for slow service. Unfortunate experience because I love a good southern restaurant.

Good was ok, but service was very slow. We were among the first seated for brunch and they seated us in the farthest corner of the in stairs which made the service even slower. My food came when my friends were almost finished. Disappointing for us as our friends were visitors from Europe.

The restaurant is beautiful and I loved the chairs, plates and cups. The food was good but not great. My mother said the halibut had no flavor and was watery, she didn't finish it. The fried chicken was really filling and had a nice touch of sweet. Both of my parents enjoyed the flavorful succotash. We had two different servers at one point and it got a little confusing. Probably won't go back since there are a million restaurants I haven't been to in the city.

The Kabocha squash and duck confit salad was a shareable starter that tickled the tongue. The crispy catfish was perfection itself. But the succotash was heavenly.
I am grateful that we shared the ganache waffle with bay marshmallow fluff and bananas. The meal was sublime.

Great venue, excellent cocktails and servers. At 7:30 on a Thursday the ambiance was lively but the noise level decreased with the bar crowd leaving. Ordered shrimp and grits and a salad- the shrimp was fresh. Will return to sit at the bar.

The food and service at Succotash are superlative. The noise levels make it difficult to converse, but that's really the only negative thing I can find to say. The ribs my husband had were the best he'd eaten. I thoroughly enjoyed the deviled eggs, chicken and waffles, and cocktail that I had. The desserts were delicious, although not special.

My friend and I did the $25 family style menu, and my complaint would be that we had to share what seemed to be very small servings of the dishes...including sharing a small salad.

Our family was visiting from London where all types of cuisines are available. We were looking for a restaurant that was representative of an area of the US. Found Succotash (November 28) and were delighted with the food, choices and quality. The maitre de (sorry to not have caught his name) seated us in a lovely alcove that used to be the safe (fun). Our waiter Jonathan was attentive and most professional.

We all travel quite a bit and were so pleased to find an area restaurant of such quality. We will come back down from Columbia to dine here again.

I've been there for brunch, lunch, and dinner. The Southern-inspired food has always been well-prepared, the menus interesting enough to keep me coming back, and the service excellent. The first time I went there, it was freezing outside, and we were about 10 minutes early for opening time. The kind manager opened up to let us in early - how rare is that! In addition, it's one of the prettiest rooms in DC - an old bank lobby with character. Tables/booths have adequate spacing, and while it's lively, it's always been quiet enough for conversation without yelling. It's close enough to Capitol One Center to make it a game day/night venue.

We went for Thanksgiving dinner, so we knew it would be crowded and loud, and the menu would be more limited than usual. That said, the restaurant was completely unprepared for the volume of guests and it showed across the board.

We checked in for a 7:15 reservation and the hostess apologized and said the wait time was 35 minutes. The two families behind us both said it would be at least an hour because that’s how long they - and many of the guests - had been waiting.

We were sent to the bar and while the drinks and service were good, it would have been nice for them to buy a round for everyone who’d been inconvenienced. They did come around once or twice with mini pecan tarts, but those were cold and hard and an odd choice to serve prior to dinner.

We were finally seated nearly 75 minutes later. The restaurant is gorgeous and our waitress was lovely, but we waited long periods of time between courses and the turkey dinner (two small slices of turkey and two small crab cakes) came without the sides which didn’t arrive for another 20 minutes. The two who ordered steak received barely warm meat and French fries covered in gravy. And nothing was particularly tasty.

It’s clear the restaurant is usually quite good - that’s why we chose it - and when we complained to the manager, she apologized and discounted the meal.

Given the late hour, we opted to take two (out of four) desserts home and requested one item on the menu, only to be told we were being given their signature hummingbird cake as a special treat. It wasn’t what we’d ordered, but we thanked them and left. We received one slice.

These are first world problems - we had a roof over our heads and food to share with family - but at $55 per head plus extra for oysters, steak etc, they needed to treat their guests better. Being honest about the wait time and buying a round would have cost them nothing and engendered goodwill, especially since the kitchen was clearly overtaxed and the food was nothing special

We waited an hour after our reserved time. The manager was overwhelmed by the Thanksgiving crowd. Made me wonder why I bothered with reservations if they were just going to overbook. The food was good, but overpriced. Should have given us a discount for our time spent waiting.
