Stratford Proper Cafe & Bistro
They were out of the veggie burger which was disappointing. I ordered Southwest Benedict instead and it was ok. The fries are really good. Service was really slow to get coffee and food.
Consistently very good.
Nice place. Nice people. Beet salad was great. Burger was marginal. I asked for some Ketchup to go with my plate of fries and they gave me about 2 teaspoons enough for about 10 fries.
I really enjoyed our meal and time at the restaurant. We’d discussed coming back during warmer weather to enjoy the marvelous patio!
The food was delicious. We had made a reservation for brunch, and extra people joined us that we didn't know about. The restaurant was very accommodating and moved tables to make sure we had enough room for our group. The service was very slow. About 20 minutes or so without service, we caught our server's eye and asked if we could order. She was very short and said she would get to us soon. I think she realized she was being short, and quickly came to take our order. The food took a little while to come out, but it was delicious as always. The one big negative for us is that they ran out of coffee! During brunch! We had all ordered coffee and didn't get any refills. We kept asking for refills, and they said they would have to make individual americanos. That was fine with us, but it took about an hour to get one americano. I'm not sure why someone didn't run to the store and buy more coffee, but it was pretty disappointing. Luckily, the $3 mimosas and bloody mary's were flowing!
It is so nice to have a restaurant in the neighborhood of this quality.
Fresh pasta dishes are amazing!
The ricotta gnocchi was absolutely phenomenal. The ingredients were interesting but man, the flavor profile it created was incredible. I’ll be going out of my way to get this again!
We went to Stratford Proper for a birthday breakfast and were the only patrons in our section. The service was fantastic- extremely attentive but not overbearing. They were having trouble with their receipt printer and were very polite and concerned with our patron experience. The food was delicious, definitely a new brunch spot favorite. The basil hollandaise on the Benedict was delicious and I especially enjoyed the simplicity of the bruleed grapefruit.
I love this place but every time I am in there if there is a large party in the dining room, it is so loud you can't have a conversation. I was literally yelling across the table to answer a question. Love the food, but they really need to work on the acoustics. The noise level ruins the dining experience.
Stratford Proper is a must try! Our waiter "Easy E" provided the best restaurant service I have had in years. I am particularly observant when it comes to customer service because I grew up in the restaurant business, so this compliment goes a long way.
The food was extremly tasteful and the chef's were accommodating to our dietary needs- another star for customer service.
We will be back and can't wait to try other Proper establishments (which our waiter
went the extra mile to tell us about).
Lovely server, timing of questions/inquiries & drinks was great.
Food was very good and outside seating was fun. Good place to share several meals to try different food items
Had so much fun. Went there for a late evening dinner. Burger was incredible, the staff was dynamite! Karen was incredible and helped explain the menu very well along with good suggestions.
For sure my new go to!
We'll be coming back and bringing our friends. I took my wife here for her birthday and the experience hit all the notes we were looking for. We sat outside and the string-lighted patio gave a good ambiance to our dining. There was a little background noise from people waiting to be seated on the sidewalk next to the patio, but I understand Stratford Proper has little control over that.
We ordered drinks. My wife got a cocktail. I forget what, but it was gin based and lemony. She loved it, and I'd say it was pretty good based on the sip I took. I had the Gose on draft which was amazing. I love that Proper has backed this salty style of beer. The waitress told us about the seasonal beer, a "Beer Rose". My wife ordered a pint and loved it, and I was glad there was a $1.00 sample size. I wanted to try it, but after trying it was glad I didn't order a whole glass. Not my thing, but again my wife loved it.
We ordered Polenta fries which were a nice, hearty, but not overly filling starter. My wide got the amazing Ricotta Gnocchi and I got a classic Margherita Pizza. Ricotta Gnocchi was phenomenal and really savory. The Margherita pizza is a classic and they nailed all the notes with a wood-fired crust.
Our service was pleasant and friendly. We weren't in any type of a rush so we found the pace of service somewhere between hasty and too slow. If we had somewhere to be, maybe, maybe, we would have had a problem with pace. As it was, however, we were there to enjoy our time out.
We skipped dessert, but not without being heavily tempted. We won't be so strong-willed next visit.
Thanks Stratford Proper!
It’s been awhile since I’ve been somewhere to eat and been impressed. This place was so delicious. The hush puppies were SO good. Highly recommend!
The beers and cocktails were great! The food was fresh and tasty. We orders the polenta fries which I highly recommend for an app. The mushroom pizza was delicious and had great flavor. The shrimp pasta was ok. The pasta itself was very good but the shrimp was overcooked and tiny. The overall flavor of the pasta dish was good. We will definitely return for another wonderful dinner. 👍
Great service. New fall menu that include items with rock shrimp. Shrimp and grits were delicious. Dessert was amazing. Crispy bread pudding coated with rice crispies, drizzled in Carmel and sprinkled with salt. Amazing!
I did tell the server that I was gluten free and when my food came out it had croutons on the plate! Weird for a chicken dish. Normally I would say something but I just picked through the potatoes which are the same size and shape as the croutons
to find them and remove them from my dish. But other than that i think that this will be a great addition to the neighborhood.
My friends and I were SO impressed by everything at Stratford Proper. Our waitress was awesome and gave us some really good food recommendations. The food was all amazing—I’m still thinking about the polenta fries! And the restaurant was cute, had great background music, and just generally had a super chill atmosphere. I’ll be back for sure!
It seemed like the kitchen was way off the night we went. The portions were crazy inconsistent and the food mediocre.
I am going to try it again soon, so I may update my review. Everyone deserves a second chance.
The special of the day was steak and pasta and it was great. I would like to have it again. I will go back for sure.
Billy is a welcoming, service-first manager, and the staff he hires follows his lead. We don’t go a couple times a month because it’s our neighborhood joint, we go because the food is outstanding and the service & atmosphere match.
The scallops were fishy, I received two scallops and a few chopped vegetables for $28. The pizza was bland and the special noodle dish was just ok. The pommel frites were the best thing we ordered. We should have ordered the hamburger. The wait staff kept rushing us, trying to remove plates prematurely from the table.
Food was okay. We got the bread appetizer and asparagus. I had the warm beet salad, but my husband got the special and it just wasn't well cooked. Ribs were tough, noodles were not cooked all the way. Took awhile to get our food in the first place so didn't want to bother with sending back. Cocktails were not good at all. Best to just stick to the wine and beer options. This was my first time here.....maybe it was an off day for the staff/kitchen. I'd give it another try.
It was a wonderful experience and we will be back again and again and again!
Our time at Stratford Proper was very delightful. Our server was conversational, knowledgable, and quite pleasant, thus making our experience enjoyable all around. The food was delicious, and the desert was top-notch. Will definitely be revisiting.
This was our second time going to Stratford Proper. Our first visit was good. The food was well prepared, interesting, and good, along with attentive and good service in a laid back but friendly local bistro. Our return visit was not good. We were celebrating a special event, but from our entry through the rest of the meal Stratford Proper seemed to be struggling. Two of our party ordered steak (to celebrate an event). Both cuts were very bad, and made worse by being ill-prepared. My son's should have been trimmed before it was cooked, and my wife's was cut at odd angles and full of gristle. Worse, they weren't cooked well at all. My wife ordered hers medium rare, but what we got was blue in some parts and slightly less rare in others (so ... cooked unevenly and incorrectly). They served it sliced into pieces, but didn't seem to notice that two of the pieces were still connected by sinew (not appetizing, and reflecting the poor cut). Both steaks were also kind of cold when served. Lots of other issues too. We would have considered sending it back, but had no confidence things would have improved. Instead, my wife just didn't eat most of the steak. Our server was trying, but there seemed to be something going on at the restaurant which distracted all the staff and left them completely inattentive to the business of running a restaurant. When we arrived, for example, we were not so much greeted as merely acknowledged to be present. It didn't help that upon entry a server spilled water on the floor (which splashed on us), and instead of apologizing or acknowledging us instead gave a disaffected "ugh" and walked off. Other staff came over to clean it up and apologized (we told them it was okay, these things happen). Overall, it was an odd experience and a complete 180 from our first visit. From front of house to back of kitchen things went wrong. It turned us off enough that I doubt we'll return any time soon.
Great neighborhood spot. Love the laid back atmosphere and vibe. Great food and service.
We enjoyed the incredible special - lamb bolognese and clam fettuccine. As a starter the roasted asparagus with burrata was both creative and beautiful presented. Our server was extremely busy and still managed to check in on us regularly. We will go back when the temperature is more moderate to enjoy the very nice patio.
This restaurant is a great restaurant to just sit back and relax and enjoy amazing food and amazing service. The menu was amazing with so many different options. I would definitely go back. This is on my top three favorite restaurants in Salt Lake City
Delicious food - eclectic menu and fabulous desserts. The trout, meatloaf and burgers were big hits. The fries were well-seasoned and perfectly crisped. Our server, Arielle, was very attentive without being intrusive. An excellent way to spend an evening.
For a Wednesday night I figured it wouldn’t be to busy but I was wrong. The food is good but the wait was way to long for a dinner at after 7:15 our reservation time.
PROSCIUTTO & ARUGULA pizza was so good! Friendly service, nice location, easy parking. Will be back!
There were 4 of us in our party, we were greeted promptly and given water. We ordered an appetizer that took almost 25 minutes to arrive just before 2 of the 4 meals were brought out. My daughters pasta dish looked as thought it had been sitting for awhile prior to being served. After 10 minutes, my other daughters hamburger was brought out. It was served medium rare for a child - I was not asked how we wanted it cooked. After another 10 minutes my meal was brought out (this is now 20 minutes after the first 2 meals were brought out - everyone was done eating by the time my food arrived). The chicken looked over cooked and was very dry. There were no roasted vegetables accept 1 cut up asparagus spear. It was a very disappointing experience. I put I would recommend the restaurant because the one other time I was there, everything was wonderful. I was excited to share it with my children and left disappointed.
They desperately need a tall sunshade (perhaps curtain-on-rod style?) for the west side of the patio. It is just too blazing hot with the sun out there until 9:00pm. Otherwise, lovely patio and food, and excellent service.
My sister and I sat outside and it was a very laid back, pleasant atmosphere. Our server was wonderful. As for the food we had, we both agreed that at the top of the menu should be the words “Just get the burger.” The burger is indeed out of this world - and get the Brie on it, as recommended by the chef, not the white cheddar. Really, honestly, if you love burgers, this is one of the best. Your taste buds will be very happy.
Super nice people and great food. Thank you
Five of seven diners enjoyed their meals. Some complained that the bacon was over cooked and the toast extremely hard. I had the breakfast pizza and it was outstanding.
Great patio, delicious food, wonderful service. We’ll be back again!
