We used to go to Straits on a weekly basis (we lived in Santana Row for several years) and it was excellent, but we have noticed that the food and service have got worse over the last couple of years.
We reached Straits on time and were denied a table reserved in advance through open table. They did not honor the reservation, hence we left for another restaurant . Lost faith in both Straits and open table.
Food is actually quite good as is the price. Is it something to write home about? No, hence the 4 stars there. My only complaint is about the noise level. The bar is open to the restaurant and this place is really hopping so if you want a quiet dinner or even to be able to talk without raising your voice, forget it. For those looking for a party atmosphere, though, it's pretty cool.
We were there to celebrate a birthday and had let them know beforehand but extremely disappointed at the service, or should I say - LACK of service!
30 minutes for someone to be at our table to take the order after asking a server to send someone since it’s been a while.
No follow up in between to check if we wanted to order more. We might have ordered more, but we were zoned out seeing the service.
Another 30 minutes and no one shows up at our table, after which I go to the reception desk only to wait for 10 more minutes and then a young lady shows up. I give her my credit card right there asking her to swipe it, get me the check so that we can leave. She wants to go to a different register to swipe my card and shows up at our table only to forget a pen for me to sign the check.
At this point of time, we just left as we didn’t want to spend another 30 minutes waiting for the pen.
Excellent memories to take back home when you were here to celebrate a birthday. NEVER AGAIN!
Very nice birthday dinner on the patio!
The food was delicious and our server was very nice. I will definitely return the next time I visit San Jose.
When we reached the restaurant, it was not too crowded. However, there was no one available to seat us. After looking around for 3-4 minutes, the receptionist approached us and seated us (We did have a reservation)
When seated, no one came around with water or asking for anything for over 15 minutes. We looked around and other waiters glanced at us but no one attended to us. Then I got up and went to the receptionist to ask for help, well she was not there. Then I asked another server to ask someone to attend to our table. He said yes, and I got back. Another 10 minutes passed by and no ne came to our table. Then the water server came with water glasses, Once again we requested him to let the servers know we were ready and to come over. The server with water said, oh that's not my job, I will help with water. We waited for 2 minutes and then just walked out of the restaurant. Will never go there again. Waste of our time
Very poor service. Forgot order but we adjusted. Reason for 1 star is that a wait staff different from the person who was serving us tried to pick up plates and rush the dinner. When we told him we were not done yet, he expressed his irritation.
Won't be back.
Food was thrown to the table instead of being delivered to the each person who ordered it.
It was Mother’s Day night so the servers were too busy?
We’ve been there several times before and it looks like overall service was degraded.
Would not go/recommend to go there for special occasions
Terrible service. Canceled two dishes because we waited so long. Never brought out drinks for us until we had asked multiple times. Multiple tables that came after us had finished and left. By far the worst dining experience I’ve had. Absolutely unacceptable.
Avoid. Used to be a solid choice, but Servers and Managers are just not paying attention. We were seated on the outdoor patio on a cool day. Asked the hostess to please turn on the gas heater. Nothing happened. Asked a server to help. Nothing happened. Walked to the front to inform the manager. He did get someone to help but they had to move a heater from the other side of the restaurant and the first 3 propane tanks were out of gas. This was the start of experience. Only one of the two appetizers we ordered arrived. Two of the main courses came. But not the third. Our waiter was no where to be found. Has another server help. Still took a while until they finally brought it out. When they did, it was no longer hot, and the quality of the halibut was poor -- fish is rarely "tough" but this was, wth various fat and gristle in the halibut. Took a while to get our servers attention -- again. He said he would talk to the chef / kitchen. Did not come back for quite some time. When he did, there was no information provided until I explicitly asked. The second appetizer (roti) did finally arrive, after the 3rd main, but was oily and not appetizing. Overall, no one seemed to take pride in their work, or the guest experience. Santana Row is full of choices. Find another place.
Order three entrées and received one at a time, food Luke warm and very slow service. No coffee available. Won’t be going back.
Not sure why the good ratings. We had one good dish which was the cauliflower appetizer. Our second shared course was mussels which took over 30 minutes to receive. When we finally did get them they were awful. The last course was the coquette’s and they were two small hard patties. Also terrible.
The food here is good, the hostess and service not so much.
We arrived at 7:15 on a Saturday to a half empty restaurant. I had checked opentable earlier to make a reservation but saw they were wide open. So we decided to not reserve so we had flexibility. When I asked the hostess for a table for 2, she said they were totally booked but would be available for walk-ins at 10. I told her opentable showed them wide open and she said “we don’t know what open table shows.” Okay... So I made a reservation on the open table app and said “ok, now I have a reservation at 7:30, I’d like to be seated outside, please.” The hostess literally rolled her eyes and showed us to our table.
After that we ordered a bunch of food and one of our appetizers took an hour to come out. Our waiter kept apologizing and said that he talked to the manger because it really was inexcusable. However, they didn’t comp the appetizer, which it would have been in good form to do.
To top things off, I got a message from opentable saying I never checked in for our reservation - whilst I was sitting at the table still waiting for our appetizer.
Clearly this establishment favors attractive hostesses over competent ones. I know they are going for a trendy, club vibe but it was a really unprofessional dining experience.
Server was great and so was the food, but the time to get food was ridiculously long. Their kitchen can’t handle big crowds on Saturday night.
Mother’s Day Eve!!
Waitress decided to take our order without a notepad — not a big deal if she got it right which she didn’t. Wine was wrong , the kept on bringing in a chili shrimp dish which we didn’t order, two dishes never came
Food has become very greasy.... Everything is pre-made. Chicken was inedible
in reservation i asked for a table inside.. they gave us an outdoor table in cold night (8/10 elec heaters not working and the portable one above us was out of gas). when i asked for inside table (the hostess said they don't have any!), When I pointed to a dozen empty 2 seater tables inside, she said those are reserved. Funny, because I had reserved a table inside!!!!..
The Tuna sashimi smelled and certainly was not fresh. out of 12 oysters we had 4 of them was empty, and they were not washed properly as they had shell debris inside of all of them. The lobster was tiny tiny tiny, and soooo expensive.. pretty much a rip off (for a $127/person meal ) all they around..
Great service and yummy food. Will be back again soon!
We met friends there for dinner and was not disappointed. The specialty drinks were fabulous especially manhattanish!
The atmosphere was fun and lively.
The waiter was helpful with helping us select our dinner plates. The seafood curry and pork belly sliders were mouth watering
We will definitely be back
We went there for date night and got seated inside between server sections. Took almost 30 minutes to get a server to take our order and get drinks. They were out of 4 different bottles of wine we tried to order to boot. We ordered tapas style and most of the food was good. Portions has gotten much smaller thought and roti prata was the size of a small cracker were as in the past it filled the whole plate. Thought the night service continued to be spotty with the manager taking care of us even thought the place was slow.
Reservation through Open Table was seamless. Even though we were on time, we had to wait for a table. Food was good, but service was horrible. I guess our waiter didn't like serving us. We asked for a straw, never came, had to flag another waiter for it and finally came. Our waiter had to be flagged down every time we needed something.
Good food options. Flavorful and tasty. Can get a bit noisy because for some reason they like to keep the music playing at higher volumes than normal. So expect an animated conversation if going with friends.
I have eaten at this restaurant countless times and have never been disappointed. I have taken many friends in small and large groups. They too enjoyed the food and drinks!
We had s reservation and they did accommodate us by putting us next to a table of our friends. We had to wait an extra 30 minutes to make that happen. Then it took another 30 mi ntes to get a drink. Good come out right away but drinks took forever. Food tasted great but we had to rush to make our limo ride home.
We came to town to celebrate our son’s 19th birthday (he is a Freshman at Santa Clara University) and we mentioned this when we made the ressie. When we arrived, two young women at reception were in deep discussion and apparently had no time to look up and acknowledge us. Their conversation lasted a couple of minutes. They then left without looking at us, asking us if we needed help, or even asking us to wait a minute. Zero acknowledgement, which was very weird and rude. A third young woman walked up and asked if we had been helped. As we began to answer no, she quickly answered a phone that began ringing and without begging her pardon or asking us to wait a minute, proceeded to speak on the phone, without as much as a look in our direction. Finally, a fourth young woman walked up and asked if we had been helped. We said no, we had barely been acknowledged. She apologized as the girl on the phone looked up at me, not apologetically, but more as a shrug. It was very strange, and again, rude. She then asked if this was a special celebration and we told her it was our son’s 19th birthday.
Our server initially evaded us for about ten minutes until I asked her if she was our server. She was then for the most part very responsive and friendly and she apologized for the delay. We ordered small plates to share. The food was delivered pretty promptly and overall was good quality. Our favorites were the tuna tartare and the pork buns. The Brussel Sprouts we ordered never arrived and luckily I noticed we had been charged for the Brussel sprouts on our bill. The waitress apologized and promptly took off the bill but we were surprised given our complaints with the poor reception and the fact that they knew it was a birthday celebration that they did not comp us our son’s dessert. Overall, we will not be coming back even though the location and menu and food is good.
We had a reservation for dinner but the noise level was so awful that we left before ordering any food or drink. We left almost as soon as we were seated as we literally could
not hear each other talk
Slow, inattentive, and sloppy waiter.
Check in on time for reservation. Ended up being a table for 7 instead of 11. Advised hostess of the change. She stated it would take 10 min to reset the tale for 7. Went to bar and got drink with everyone else. came back to host stand. Hostess totally forgot waited another 2-3 minutes. She dropped the menus and started to take off . Asked for a drink menu and she never returned. 10-15 mins go by and server finally touches our table. He advised us that it is family style and everything will come out once ready. We were fine with that since we were only ordering small plates. We also ordered a round of drinks for everyone at the table. that took over 30 mins to get to our table. Server then began to say that he was busy because he had a lot of tables. As a paying table, that is not our problem and he should blame that on the hostess and management for lack of training. Asked for a manager but never showed up.
Beware!!!! service will be delayed for large parties and if restaurant is busy.
would not recommend this place for a group of friends or family.
We will be back
The food concept is great.
The recipe is good as well.
The pre prepared food is not acceptable at all.
I ordered chicken drumstick, calamari, pork ribs and chicken satay as an appetizer. The only made to order or hot food was Calamari. Everything else had a good taste but I can bet they all were premade.
My drinks came after we finished the appetizer. Than comes the dinner.
My seabass was literally bitter. It is because the seabass comes with mushroom and bell peppers. The bell peppers were too old and turned into a very dark color and spread the bitterness throughout the fish.
Good spot, Good ambiance, Good recipe and Good pricing but a POOR MANAGEMENT .
The music was so loud we could hardly talk. We asked the manager if he could turn it down. He said he would but did not. The service was awful! Took forever to order, took forever to get our bill. He hardly came to check up on us.
It was a good night! Is a good option for a special occasion, the place is very nice , service is great, the food is delicious.
Food is as good as it always has been. Service is terrible. None of the employees seem bothered except 1-2. Seating was slow though it was empty. THERE IS A CAKE FEE/slice!!! Never heard of it. Sure fire to lose business when they are pretty empty anyways
Worst service ever ever ever!
Not what it used to be at all!!
I cannot get enough of this restaurant. Manager came to our rescue and got us on the patio (in one of three open patio tables) after the hostess told us our reservation for a patio table did not guarantee us a patio table. Sitting on the patio is a night and day day difference for the dining experience. People watching!!!
Food was fair, not great. Service was quick, but very unfriendly.
Food was very good, and service was excellent. The live music /DJ was the icing on the cake
