I tried new items from their menu. Ordered 2 small plates- roti prata and wok fired mussels and spicy street noodles with shrimp. The mussels lacked flavor and were too undercooked for me. The spicy noodles tasted like ketchup. I should have stuck to my usual items. And our waiter was too busy to notice that he charged us for steamed rice we never had. The atmosphere and adult vibes are fun, and I will probably go back for drinks in the future. But not for food.
Worst service ever!!!! Have been here many times and it seems every visit gets worse. Made reservations for a 8 for a 50th birthday. Got there on time and was given a table in the very back room with no ambiance eve after I reserved a table in the main room they said it wasn't available . The waiter came, took drink orders and about 30 minutes later we got our drinks. He "Christopher" took 1 food order and left. That food order came and then about 20 minutes later we had to flag him down to take everyone else's food order . Some of us had food, some were done, food came in random intervals. 1 order was wrong and he couldn't answer the questions asked about it. The men delivering our food would just slap the food down and go. We flagged him down AT LEAST 5 times otherwise we'd still be sitting there 3 days later. 2 people with special requests asked for their own bill but he brought only 1 bill and asked if we wanted 2 bills after all and since he was so bad we felt we'd be waiting another 30 minutes for that so we said no. All we wanted was to be finished with him. He brought out a cupcake with a candle for our birthday person but didn't ask or tell anyone if it was time for it. He just slid it on the table and left. He didn't ask us if we wanted anymore drinks or any dessert he just brought the bill. He was way over his head this evening. Because of his bad service it was hard to enjoy the food. The Murtabak was chewy as if left under lights too long.
On a happier note, we stayed for the dancing and the DJ was great. We danced and had a great time but our waiter definitely put a damper on dinner!!!
Visiting Straits Restaurant is a perfect experience every time. The place by itself is really cool, and the food is really tasty. Today we had Singapure Chicken Satay to start and Garlic Noodles and Vegetarian Fried Rice as main course. Amazing!
Everything went well, except for my entree coming 30 minutes late.. otherwise, the ambiance was incredible!
We were regulars at the Straits in SF until it closed a couple years back. This location in Santana Row was nothing like the one in the city. Poor service - the waitress could care less to take our order, never checked on us, had to remind her repeatedly to bring our food and beverages and she kept shaking her leg as if she was hard pressed to go to the restroom or just wanted us to give our order and not ask questions. The food was poor - served luke warm at best and the taste below average. The ambience is less than optimal to dine with a child - this place seems geared up to be a hook up place with scantily dressed hostesses and waiters. Hugely disappointed and will not return.
Food was amazing. Yellow curry was so delicious, wish we got more roti however. Seafood pad Thai was very favorful as well.
Waiter forgot my food. My entree salad came 15 minutes after other hot entree was served. The waiter was nowhere to be found.
Horrible, horrible service.
My daughter and the couple seated at the table next to us were bathed in sauce for an order of samosas that the se er misplaced on the table and fell.
We were not even offered compensation for the dry cleaning we will have to employ in order to remove the stains. Manage my did not take the time to apologize.
Never coming back!
With our reservation for 3, the hostesses were unable to put us at a table for 4 outside. They said they were reserved for larger parties -- parties of 4. We found this completely inane.
The rest of our experience was wonderful.
Please read the reviews on yelp etc. Service is very slow and at least in our case the food is not fresh cooked to order. Rather they appear to have sides etc pre-prepared and reheated. This results in dry, overcooked dishes.
Will not be returning
Was missing several beer options that were listed on the menu
Was missing a major seafood option
Visiting from out of town for a business trip. We picked this based on the recommendation of one of our co-workers. Unfortunately, I don't think this is the same restaurant he remembered. I got the impression that this place doesn't really put an emphasis on customer service, because they probably don't need to, being in the trendiest section of San Jose on Santana Row.
I will say, the food we did have was delicious - perfectly cooked and each one was unique.
Here's where things went south. Three of us sitting together all wanted to get their well-known spicy crab dish. We were disappointed to hear that they only had one crab dish remaining, so one of us ordered the crab and the other two ordered the lobster variant.
The waiter returned a few minutes later, to inform our friend that, in fact, they were OUT of the crab. No problem, he said, I'll just take the lobster.
Guess what? They were OUT of that dish as well! He had to settle for a chicken dish. Mind you - 1) this is a restaurant that promotes its seafood offerings; 2) we were there on a Tuesday evening at 6:00, and the restaurant wasn't even half-full by then. Very poor buying/planning by the restaurant.
What was really kind of insulting is that their attempts to make things right were half-hearted. No offer to comp my friend for the chicken dish he really didn't want, or give us any real concession. The manager did offer us some free desserts, which no one wanted...but c'mon, when you spend $500 on dinner for 7 people, you'd think they'd make a bit more of an effort to make everyone happy.
To put a nice cap on things, we decided to just cut our losses and order coffee before paying the bill. The waiter returned a few minutes later...OUT OF COFFEE! Really? You can't even manage your coffee inventory?!?! He made an attempt to get us coffee from the restaurant next door, but it was lukewarm and burnt.
In short, if you want a special dining experience, I don't think this is the place for you.
I really liked our table server. He was cheerful, patient, gave great suggestions and explained dishes well. I think his name was Ulysses.
Food quality has gone bad - one to take off the list.
It was my wife’s birthday and we ended up leaving halfway through the meal (apps only, was about to order dinner but decided F this). Our server was non existent and when our app order was taken it was rushed to where she didn’t even ask is if we wanted drinks. On the flip side it was probably just an off night for the server. We left hungry.
The drinks and food were fabulous. The service was very inconsistent and we were really surprised when it kept happening throughout the meal. First the waitress put in the wrong order for an appetizer. Then after we told her, a food runner arrived with another thing we didn't order and was arguing with us, trying to tell us what it was over and over. We assured him we did NOT order it. Then he said rudely, "then what did you order so I can look for your food." We just laughed and said to ask our waitress what we ordered. Then after asking the waitress to pace our meal since we ordered 6 appetizers instead of main courses. Within moments all the appetizers arrived, not really fitting on the table and then soon after the original appetizer we arrived showed up too. Then the busboy would removed a plate without asking if we were done, so we no longer had the dipping sauce for what was on our plate. Then after arriving at home, we got an email from OpenTable saying we had not shown up for our reservation. Clearly the hostess never checked us in. That was the last straw, not sure I can deal with that again.
Food was average. Coming from Singapore we felt that none of the dishes really hit the mark. Friendly and attentive staff. Pricy. Can give it a miss.
Wow. This place was pretty bad. The food sucked and was flavorless. We had to ask for the waiter to bring 5 ingredients so we can spruce up our meals - and they were all at least edible after. Our waiter was so sweet, but would literally disappear for 30 minutes at a time. We didn't get our food until an hour in, and my dish (which was the same noodles someone else at my table ordered) came 20 min after everyone else had finished their meals. Go there to drink, nothing else.
It was our first time dining here and everyone was very welcoming. Our reservation was confirmed and kept as scheduled. We had options of seating when we arrived, despite how busy they were. Our waiter explained the type of dining clearly and was quick and attentive the entire time. The food was clearly the best part. Everything we had was well worth the price for the portion and flavor. We will be returning for more for sure!
The food was delicious and interesting. Nice choice of small plates. Cocktails were very good.
I booked a table for a birthday party. The staff and waiter were great. The food is always consistent and delicious. Cannot go wrong with tapas style. They have a mix drink pitcher that was a hit. The cake was brought out and then cut and severed. Our server was busy for a Saturday night but we didn't notice since he would come by to check on us. Overall a great evening.
The service was terrible!!! They kept forgetting to bring the drinks, they brought the wrong food and it took forever. Just not what we expected. To be fair, the food was good.
The server was not good, very slow. She didn’t know what vegan was. We were trying to impress our friend who was with us from LA and she was not impressed. It was all to do with the service.
Straits had good quality food and great service. Our favorite menu items of the evening were the crispy cauliflower with a spicy aioli, and the lemongrass and mint Singapore soda. Service was fast, but not rushed, a truly enjoyable experience.
Even after having the Opentable reservation and checking in 5 minutes early we had to wait for more than 20 minutes for our table. They seated groups that came in after us. Absolutely not prepared for opentable reservations.
We used to go to Straits on a weekly basis (we lived in Santana Row for several years) and it was excellent, but we have noticed that the food and service have got worse over the last couple of years.
We reached Straits on time and were denied a table reserved in advance through open table. They did not honor the reservation, hence we left for another restaurant . Lost faith in both Straits and open table.
Food is actually quite good as is the price. Is it something to write home about? No, hence the 4 stars there. My only complaint is about the noise level. The bar is open to the restaurant and this place is really hopping so if you want a quiet dinner or even to be able to talk without raising your voice, forget it. For those looking for a party atmosphere, though, it's pretty cool.
We were there to celebrate a birthday and had let them know beforehand but extremely disappointed at the service, or should I say - LACK of service!
30 minutes for someone to be at our table to take the order after asking a server to send someone since it’s been a while.
No follow up in between to check if we wanted to order more. We might have ordered more, but we were zoned out seeing the service.
Another 30 minutes and no one shows up at our table, after which I go to the reception desk only to wait for 10 more minutes and then a young lady shows up. I give her my credit card right there asking her to swipe it, get me the check so that we can leave. She wants to go to a different register to swipe my card and shows up at our table only to forget a pen for me to sign the check.
At this point of time, we just left as we didn’t want to spend another 30 minutes waiting for the pen.
Excellent memories to take back home when you were here to celebrate a birthday. NEVER AGAIN!
Very nice birthday dinner on the patio!
The food was delicious and our server was very nice. I will definitely return the next time I visit San Jose.
When we reached the restaurant, it was not too crowded. However, there was no one available to seat us. After looking around for 3-4 minutes, the receptionist approached us and seated us (We did have a reservation)
When seated, no one came around with water or asking for anything for over 15 minutes. We looked around and other waiters glanced at us but no one attended to us. Then I got up and went to the receptionist to ask for help, well she was not there. Then I asked another server to ask someone to attend to our table. He said yes, and I got back. Another 10 minutes passed by and no ne came to our table. Then the water server came with water glasses, Once again we requested him to let the servers know we were ready and to come over. The server with water said, oh that's not my job, I will help with water. We waited for 2 minutes and then just walked out of the restaurant. Will never go there again. Waste of our time
Very poor service. Forgot order but we adjusted. Reason for 1 star is that a wait staff different from the person who was serving us tried to pick up plates and rush the dinner. When we told him we were not done yet, he expressed his irritation.
Won't be back.
Food was thrown to the table instead of being delivered to the each person who ordered it.
It was Mother’s Day night so the servers were too busy?
We’ve been there several times before and it looks like overall service was degraded.
Would not go/recommend to go there for special occasions
Terrible service. Canceled two dishes because we waited so long. Never brought out drinks for us until we had asked multiple times. Multiple tables that came after us had finished and left. By far the worst dining experience I’ve had. Absolutely unacceptable.
Avoid. Used to be a solid choice, but Servers and Managers are just not paying attention. We were seated on the outdoor patio on a cool day. Asked the hostess to please turn on the gas heater. Nothing happened. Asked a server to help. Nothing happened. Walked to the front to inform the manager. He did get someone to help but they had to move a heater from the other side of the restaurant and the first 3 propane tanks were out of gas. This was the start of experience. Only one of the two appetizers we ordered arrived. Two of the main courses came. But not the third. Our waiter was no where to be found. Has another server help. Still took a while until they finally brought it out. When they did, it was no longer hot, and the quality of the halibut was poor -- fish is rarely "tough" but this was, wth various fat and gristle in the halibut. Took a while to get our servers attention -- again. He said he would talk to the chef / kitchen. Did not come back for quite some time. When he did, there was no information provided until I explicitly asked. The second appetizer (roti) did finally arrive, after the 3rd main, but was oily and not appetizing. Overall, no one seemed to take pride in their work, or the guest experience. Santana Row is full of choices. Find another place.
Order three entrées and received one at a time, food Luke warm and very slow service. No coffee available. Won’t be going back.
Not sure why the good ratings. We had one good dish which was the cauliflower appetizer. Our second shared course was mussels which took over 30 minutes to receive. When we finally did get them they were awful. The last course was the coquette’s and they were two small hard patties. Also terrible.
