The four major culinary cultures -- Malaysian/Indonesian, Chinese, Indian and Nonya -- are in fact a blend of each other, creating a new cuisine that is unique and more complex in flavors and fragrances. Straight Hawker Street offers a menu that features the complexity of all these Singaporean cuisines in chef Chris Yeo's unique interpretation. This Asian-Zen inspired Burlingame location opened in August of 2004.

Straits has changed to a more casual "tapas" format. The roti prata is by far the best - thin and puffy (typical roti that I've had are pancake thick). The garlic noodles were excellent. Honey walnut prawns and the BBQ chicken wings were good too. The lychee mule was yummy !
The bar area should be expanded which would be more conducive to the new casual format. The benches and lighting are a bit sterile in the dining area.
My son has a severe nut allergy and our server did not seem to understand the severity of the situation so we lost confidence and as a result my son did not eat anything.
Also, they got our order wrong and gave us the wrong check.
Too many “wrongs” for a dining experience for us!
I always liked Straits but lately it’s looking run down. The restrooms are terrible. I thought I was at a dive bar. Trash all over the floor and dirty. They need to do something. I only go there when I can’t get reservations anywhere else, but after the restroom situation -I doubt I would come back
Caveat: My expectations were too high prior to my dining experience. The staff at the restaurant were friendly and welcoming and attentive, no complaints there.
The biggest expectation mismatch was in the actual food. The chicken wings were overly sauced and the wings were tiny...essentially you got a mouthful of sweet sauce and little more. The wok charred brussel sprouts were swimming in oil, the veggies themselves were overcooked to the extent there was no green left, only char and yellow, and it was again over sugared and syrupy.
I think the concept deserves a greater effort at execution because I think if the restaurant delivered better quality food, the menu is a good one and should get strong reception. I do hope my visit was an anomaly and perhaps it was also skewed because I only ordered two dishes and didn't try the many other offerings on the menu.
Our reservation was after the lunch rush (1:30) & were quickly and cheerfully shown to a table. The first impression was a bit unsavory: One side of our seating, was a long banquette, and our part and the next table had a pretty good dusting of greasy crumbs, which I quickly brushed off before my guest sat on them. As they had only around 3 occupied tables at the time, there is really no excuse for such a slovenly state of affairs. Whomever bussed that table should have seen to those crumbs. Our waitress (also serving as bartender & hostess) was very friendly and informative regarding the menu.
We ordered several plates and shared them, which works well here. Everything we tried was tasty & well-seasoned (satay skewers, bbq ribs with a bit of potato salad, buttery chicken tikka masala, and "origami cod", cleverly steamed in an origami parchment box.)
We also enjoyed among us, a glass of wine, and lychee martinis. The wine (and a bottle of ice water, a nice touch), came right away, but the martinis seemed to take an inordinate amount of time, though when they finally arrived, were delicious and refreshing. All in all, I would go back. Seems like a great place for some Happy Hour tapas & cocktails, or a dinner or lunch of a variety of nibbly bites.
Next time, I would hope for a more fastidiously looked after room, and a beverage service that is a bit quicker in the delivery.
This used to be a wonderful restaurant with a terrific menu. They've slashed the menu and changed the format and to be honest, it sucks. It's all in the small plates style and they've kept a few things from their old menu, but gone from a 6 page menu to less than a page. All of the great dinner items they had are gone. Very little variety.
We had drinks and appetizers then left and won't be back. What a shame to ruin what was a wonderful restaurant with such a non-menu. Strongly advise just skipping this and going somewhere else.
This is the same restaurant but with a new menu. As far as I am concerned, the food may be different, Asian street food, but it has the same mediocre flavor profiles. We had five of the small plates, and I mean small. The salad barely covered the plate and the rib plate only held three. The chicken wings were terrible but the highlight was the two small pork belly buns. The meat was held by Peking Duck style bun with hoisin style sauce lightly applied.
The service was okay but should have been stellar since there were virtually no one else in the place during lunch on a Saturday in busy downtown Burlingame. To take the job of making sure there were napkins and utensils easy, a large plastic glass is placed on the table with all that is needed including those brown napkins that you get at fast food restaurants and need replacing after a few wipes.
Can someone tell me why a restaurant uses hard, plastic chairs without any cushioning? I just don't get it. That's what is prevalent here. You would also think they would paint the walls when re-branding. Not here.
Such terrible Asian food. Pad Thai was watery and tasteless. Super expensive fried snapper had great presentation but way overcooked. Green curry was decent, but nothing to write home about. The wait staff is all Asian - you'd think one of them would have said something by now.
The service was very slow and quite forgetful. It took 20 mins to get 2 glasses of wine and another 20 for bowls for the soup. The shrimp wasn't cooked, the laksa was overly fishy and the steak was chard and rubbery. Not a good experience at all.
I went with high expectations based on the reviews other diners had given. Sadly, this restaurant turned out to be a huge dissapointment. Everything from the small plates to cocktails tasted nasty!
The verdict : A mocking representation of Singaporean - Malaysian food.
Had a great birthday celebration with the girls. The restaurant even gave us complimentary birthday cakes for our two birthday celebrants. Wonderful thing was even though we lingered after we wee done, we never felt dismissed or obligated to leave.
Fun place to get together for a Girls' Night Out especially with their variety of cocktails to choose from. Been coming here for years and will continue to do so whether it's for drinks and appetizers or family style dinner.
I dined here years ago and liked it at the time. Unfortunately my last experience wasn't great, the first impression was it was fairly empty for a Sat. night. The next was the smell, there was a strong fishy smell. It made it hard to order and we stayed away from any seafood. The waiter/service was fine but overall there are much better options out there and wouldn't recommend.
