Straits - Houston - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
I made reservations without knowledge that the Straits located in CityCenter (Houston) was closing. My friends and I weren't left with many options to select from from dinner. Dinner was still tasteful but the energy and overall vibe of the restaurant that we were used to is gone.
Having lived in South East Asia for a number of years, I was excited at the prospect of eating at Straits. First of all, it is located at a very nice location at Houston CityCentre, close to many officers and shopping venues, overlooking a nice courtyard where kids can frolic and play. Nicely decorated, it had good ambiance and great views.
Unfortunately the food didn't necessarily meet the mark; missing from the menu were some staples like char kway teow, fried rice (they had emperor fried rice but it was more chinese than SE Asian), and only had 1 curry option if I recall. It missed the culture, flavor and options that were so vibrant of the community Straits tried to represent.
I'll certainly try Straits again, but don't hold out much hope - for those wanting a true Indonesian/Singaporean/Malaysian experience, try out Malay Malay in League City.
Overall friendly, sophisticated, relaxed dining. Food selection OK, basically one page entrée selections. We lost our waitress for about 45 minutes, so we flagged other wait staff for drink re-fills. Large crowd for 4th of July weekend, restaurant was a nice reprieve from outside festivities. If I planned a City center outing, I would recommend Straits for dinner.
Food was delicious. We had the roti prata bread appetizer, the veggie pad thai, the kung pao calamari, schezuan green beans and wok seared brussel sprouts - all very good. The weather was nice, so we sat outside - it's right on the City Centre green, so lots of people walking by and kids playing on the green. The patio was full, but there were plenty of open tables inside on Saturday evening - the bar turns into a dance club at 10:30 on Saturdays, so if you are there late, I would avoid getting a table near the front, but we couldn't hear it on the patio.
I am not a harsh critic, but, this place was dirty, horrible service... the worst restaurant that I've ever been to. I wanted to leave the entire time. Like, laughable, and I have no idea how this place is even in business. Don't let the pictures on Yelp fool you - trust me, you do not want to ever go to this place - don't even take the chance.
Service is disorganized (three times they tried to bring someone else's food to our table) and the place needs to be cleaner. Bathrooms really look dirty - kind of makes you wonder what the kitchen is like. The food was really pretty good, but, one dish was not as described. It was tasty so did not make an issue. I wish this place could be a little better. It has really good outside area and the style of food is great. I am rooting for them to get their act together.
Always liked this place to sit outside and watch people walk by, enjoying the live music, sipping a nice drink! We especially love the Singapore chili crab, but were disappointed this time that instead of 1 nice big blue crab (as promised on the menu!), we got 3 small crabs with very little meat... Other recommendations: roti prata, seafood red curry risotto, Laksa noodle soup...
Not good...The menu has changed drastically...the very thing I looked forward to "Braised Short Ribs" were not on the menu while the menu listed in open table has it listed. My second choice was the ribeye....however the restaurant was out of ribeye at 6:30pm on a Saturday nights....who does that! ...my wife was also disappointed with the lemon drop martini she ordered as it spilled down the side of the glass causing a sticky mess.
Lastly I he manager who was close by and appeared to be aware of the mishaps of the evening .... never approached our table....lastly the restrooms were disappointing....I get the approach of trying to offer a chic restroom experience with the M/W shared sink area ...however one of the ladies toilets was out of order and the exposure of the restaurant cleaning supplies area only separated by a half drawn curtain was very distasteful.... Not returning
All of the dishes were great, except calamari which was a bit greasy.
Service was poor. Dishes came out 10-15 minutes apart and it wasn't busy at all. Server not attentive and had to be asked multiple times for things. Another server stepped in and was great although he threw away my leftovers after I asked for it to go. We complained and manager had appropriate reaction. He took a bit off the bill.
Would return to see if better service.
First time back on New Year's Eve for family dinner. The menu had definitely changed. Our server Eric was absolutely wonderful. Providing great suggestions, what to mix with what, giving suggestions based on life palate. Very attentive without being obnoxious. Just another reason to love this place more. What a gem. A+ all the way around.
