I made reservations without knowledge that the Straits located in CityCenter (Houston) was closing. My friends and I weren't left with many options to select from from dinner. Dinner was still tasteful but the energy and overall vibe of the restaurant that we were used to is gone.
The restaurant and food were great!!!....but I specifically requested a private room for my birthday party, and they gave it away. Unfortunately they didn't do anything to take care of the situation.
Having lived in South East Asia for a number of years, I was excited at the prospect of eating at Straits. First of all, it is located at a very nice location at Houston CityCentre, close to many officers and shopping venues, overlooking a nice courtyard where kids can frolic and play. Nicely decorated, it had good ambiance and great views.
Unfortunately the food didn't necessarily meet the mark; missing from the menu were some staples like char kway teow, fried rice (they had emperor fried rice but it was more chinese than SE Asian), and only had 1 curry option if I recall. It missed the culture, flavor and options that were so vibrant of the community Straits tried to represent.
I'll certainly try Straits again, but don't hold out much hope - for those wanting a true Indonesian/Singaporean/Malaysian experience, try out Malay Malay in League City.
Very very bad service!!!! At lot of customers complaining about that poor service!!! If someone doesn't take seriously that restaurant, little bye little will go down!!! Never ever again I will go there..
Lovely patio but green band were noisy so moved inside, oh an Texas hot.
Food delicious, service very attentive, highly recommend
Overall friendly, sophisticated, relaxed dining. Food selection OK, basically one page entrée selections. We lost our waitress for about 45 minutes, so we flagged other wait staff for drink re-fills. Large crowd for 4th of July weekend, restaurant was a nice reprieve from outside festivities. If I planned a City center outing, I would recommend Straits for dinner.
Fantastic food and a great location. The service was very friendly as well.
Food was delicious. We had the roti prata bread appetizer, the veggie pad thai, the kung pao calamari, schezuan green beans and wok seared brussel sprouts - all very good. The weather was nice, so we sat outside - it's right on the City Centre green, so lots of people walking by and kids playing on the green. The patio was full, but there were plenty of open tables inside on Saturday evening - the bar turns into a dance club at 10:30 on Saturdays, so if you are there late, I would avoid getting a table near the front, but we couldn't hear it on the patio.
Awesome as always
Dinner pick for my daughter's 14th Birthday dinner. Great food, great ambience. Not a place for small kids unless it's early and you sit in one of the cabana's outside.
I am not a harsh critic, but, this place was dirty, horrible service... the worst restaurant that I've ever been to. I wanted to leave the entire time. Like, laughable, and I have no idea how this place is even in business. Don't let the pictures on Yelp fool you - trust me, you do not want to ever go to this place - don't even take the chance.
The first thing I noticed were large holes in the booth benches. It went downhill from there.
Great food! Service can be more attentive. Found the attire of the hostesses to be too young for this restaurant - like they were young girls as hostesses in a young bar. Didn't seem to go quite well with the look and feel and age group of the guests here.
We had a great meal here on the 45th anniversary of our first date. The food was excellent. Only complaint is the noise level - quite hard to hear over the noise.
Service is disorganized (three times they tried to bring someone else's food to our table) and the place needs to be cleaner. Bathrooms really look dirty - kind of makes you wonder what the kitchen is like. The food was really pretty good, but, one dish was not as described. It was tasty so did not make an issue. I wish this place could be a little better. It has really good outside area and the style of food is great. I am rooting for them to get their act together.
Food, service, and atmosphere was great. We had a great time on my husband's birthday. They did not rush us and everything came out timely and perfectly.
Always liked this place to sit outside and watch people walk by, enjoying the live music, sipping a nice drink! We especially love the Singapore chili crab, but were disappointed this time that instead of 1 nice big blue crab (as promised on the menu!), we got 3 small crabs with very little meat... Other recommendations: roti prata, seafood red curry risotto, Laksa noodle soup...
Food was delicious but service was disappointing. the outdoor tables and chair are dirty/stained and in need of replacement.
We always have delicious food everytime!
We had all lived in SIngapore and we needed a Tiger beer fix!
Great satay and butter chicken!
Not good...The menu has changed drastically...the very thing I looked forward to "Braised Short Ribs" were not on the menu while the menu listed in open table has it listed. My second choice was the ribeye....however the restaurant was out of ribeye at 6:30pm on a Saturday nights....who does that! ...my wife was also disappointed with the lemon drop martini she ordered as it spilled down the side of the glass causing a sticky mess.
Lastly I he manager who was close by and appeared to be aware of the mishaps of the evening .... never approached our table....lastly the restrooms were disappointing....I get the approach of trying to offer a chic restroom experience with the M/W shared sink area ...however one of the ladies toilets was out of order and the exposure of the restaurant cleaning supplies area only separated by a half drawn curtain was very distasteful.... Not returning
Good food and awesome environment, definitely my husband and are planning on returning again. Good Job!
All of the dishes were great, except calamari which was a bit greasy.
Service was poor. Dishes came out 10-15 minutes apart and it wasn't busy at all. Server not attentive and had to be asked multiple times for things. Another server stepped in and was great although he threw away my leftovers after I asked for it to go. We complained and manager had appropriate reaction. He took a bit off the bill.
Would return to see if better service.
Probably one of the best service I had in a while, waiters were knowledgeable, friendly and prompt. Food was excellent without being outstanding, some interesting cocktails like Lychee Martini are available. Will likely come back.
The food and service are always very good, can't fault it. My second visit in one week.
Excellent. Every time I go I have praises for the place.
straits was an excellent restaurant, that gave me and my date an amazing valentines day with the most friendly and informative staff.
I would recommend others if the service were better. Either they did not have wait staff to meet the dinner demand on a Saturday night or our waiter was inattentive. Service was slow.
We ordered starters, steak, lobster, all food fantastic!!! Service really good. Will come back😊
Great food and atmosphere! Our server was wonderful and stayed on top of everything.
Birthday with a group of friends. Food and service is the best that I've had in awhile. Can't rave enough about this place!
Really good food. Silly complaint, but they charge for rice! Some of the dishes have to have rice and it doesn't come with it. It's a nominal fee, but I thought that was strange. Had a great time. Will definitely return.
Enjoyed the first time visit and hope the return soon
My date and I had the spicy noodles and the shrimp fried rice. They were both good but the spicy noodles were delicious. We plan on going back just to get it again next time.
Very quant, our tapas came after our meal was delivered was the only issue
Good food. Nice change from PF Chang. Need to do a better job of cleaning the tables....ours was sticky. Wait staff was nice.
First time back on New Year's Eve for family dinner. The menu had definitely changed. Our server Eric was absolutely wonderful. Providing great suggestions, what to mix with what, giving suggestions based on life palate. Very attentive without being obnoxious. Just another reason to love this place more. What a gem. A+ all the way around.
Food was amazing. Love the chicken lollipops and roti. Great deal on Thursday. Happy hour all night. Lychee martinis were on point!
The brussel sprouts are LIFE CHANGING! Straits never dissapoints.
Food was great service was fast only waiting maybe ten minutes for my appetizer then 5-10 later main entree was out
we had a brilliant meal. Simple. Good service. Nice views into the courtyard. Parking...not soo much
