Story Ratings and Reviews
I always like to go to Story when the Sunday $10 special is ciappino. Their version has shrimp, mussels, halibut and fingerlings in a tomato sauce. And I always star with the green salad. Though it's only lettuce with pieces of pistachios, the dressing is so light and refreshing I'd like to replicate it.
Open Table indicated Story as $$ for price. This restaurant is at least a $$$$, I considered Story to be expensive. My sister and I each had one glass of wine and split a few appetizers. Our bill was $90. The entrees were in the $35-45 range. I do not consider this a $$ priced restaurant.
Service was excellent. They offered to re-seat us from the first seats by the window under the point lights that were causing me headache to the back of the restaurant, which was darker, quieter, they also didn't seat anyone right next to us, making it a bit more intimate for the anniversary celebration that we had. They also took coats as we came in. Server was well trained, polite and friendly, came to check on us often, answered all of our questions, got all orders exactly how we wanted. For the price point , the overall restaurant ambiance s somewhat lacking (plain modern design), no music, yet noise level somewhat high, lack of privacy (tables very close to each other), and they rush you through your courses and payment (not the romantic atmosphere one would expect for a date etc). The food was fantastic however, tasted excellent, only perhaps slightly lacking in visual presentation for the main courses (for the price point). Tagliatele (pasta) appetizer was filling, could have been a whole meal in itself; while ceviche was probably the highlight with softness of the fish offset by crispy crunchy chips. Halibut with mashed potatoes was pleasant with its milky and creamy texture (although mushrooms slightly over-salted), while the wild rice added some crunchiness and grounded the seabass. Extensive wine list was impressive, pomegranate spritzer was just okay, beers inexpensive ($6+) compared to wine (aproxim. from $10 per gl/or from $40+ per bottle). Overall a great place to come to taste good food.
I love Story. The food is amazing, the servers are very helpful and if you describe something you like they will find the perfect wine. My last visit was for a birthday - when I told the server what type of wine they liked and he pulled the perfect wine. The place is a little expensive but very worth it.
This year, my husband and I treated ourselves to dinner at Story for our 27th Anniversary, and what a treat it was! The service was perfect and the food was absolutely delicious. I have honestly never tasted mashed potatoes that good in my entire life. I thought that maybe they would be fairly mundane - how special can you make mashed potatoes? But all of dinner extraordinary. Not only was the fish cooked to perfection, but the seasoning was exactly to my taste. For fine cuisine, there was ample food (I even had left overs). The thing that stood out to me was that the food was SO good that I didn't need to eat everything on my plate to feel like I not only got my money's worth, but I was sated on an exemplary level. I only wish that I lived further away so that I wouldn't be tempted to eat there every week - that might take the special-ness out of the experience.
We took advantage of the $10 Sunday night entrée. All four of us were really impressed with the meal. It was absolutely delicious. Excellent service, not rushed. Ordered 2 desserts that were fabulous as well. A lovely opportunity this presents to try the restaurant! Would highly recommend.
Overall the ambience was good but the tables were too close together. We heard the entire conversations of the people on either side of us and vice versa. The wait staff was unable to get next to the table so had to reach in from behind. Because of this we were bumped into several times.
Our table #6 was wobbly and rocked. We were uncomfortable mentioning this due to the proximity of other patrons and how awkward it would be should they try to fix it.
We may try again but not for an anniversary celebration due to no privacy at all.
The food and service were very good but in my opinion the short ribs were under seasoned.
This was our second time dining at Story - our first time was for Valentines day a couple years ago which featured a pre-fixed menu so we wanted to try the full menu. We were not disappointed.
The wine list was extensive and the staff were helpful in offering guidance.
Service was attentive yet not overbearing and the pace between courses was good. Most importantly the food was exceptional - great flavors with good presentation.
The food is second to maybe only one restaurant in the city. It is always brilliant. Very consistent. Story offers one of the best dishes if not the best dish in the city. It is a very professional and friendly environment with a wonderful ambience, beautifully modern decor that still offers warmth and coziness. The drinks enter my top list for the city as well. Very tasty, very inventive. One of my favorite restaurants period. Will always keep coming back.
This was the first time in a long time that they were out of their $10 special entree (salmon) by 6:30 p.m. Yes, I got coho salmon(the last one) for $29, and it was good. But the meal was subtly "off" with my husband's duck breast rather fatty and my raspberry sorbet a little granular. I think the night was just too busy for the usual perfect meal and service.
We arrived early for our reservation & were asked if we would like to wait in the bar, which we did. The hostess told us that our table as being setup. We went to the bar & ordered a glasses of wine. After 20 minutes we asked about our table & the hostess told us she thought we were eating at the bar. Needless to say there was a breakdown in communication. We were seated promptly Our waitress came soon thereafter and took our order. We were served water however we waited probably 10 minutes for bread and butter. All in all a suboptimal dining experience.
My wife and I celebrated our ninth wedding anniversary at Story. The food was incredible and the service was very friendly. I had ordered the sweetbread marsala appetizer and short ribs entree paired with a pinot – both were delicious. My wife had the ceviche appetizer and halibut entree – very tasty and fresh. We finished this perfect meal with a lemon pudding cake. The outstanding service was friendly with casual conversation.
We had the Sunday evening special for $10 of which we have had several, all very good.
The portion is smaller making it just right for seniors. The wine however good is overpriced in my opinion. I had one glass of Keenan chardonnay 2015 which sells at Gomers for $29.50 per bottle and was charged $16 . At six pours per bottle that comes to less than $5 cost per serving.
I think a mark-up of over 300% is excessive.
We've heard about this restaurant from friends for a couple of years now, and we're so glad we gave it a try. We had the tasting menu and ate every bite! Even things we normally would be opposed to (beets, for example), were delicious. I'd definitely highly recommend this restaurant!
Came here for my husband's birthday dinner and it was wonderful. It was not very crowded so it was quiet and private. The food was very good, the beets and halibut were our favorites and we enjoyed a nice bottle of wine. I would definitely recommend trying out Story.
I've been dining at Story since it opened several years ago. I've never had a bad meal there. The food is exquisite and the service is very good whether you sit at the bar, in the bar, or in the beautiful dining room. It is one of my absolute favorite restaurants in Greater Kansas City.
I had made a reservation on open table for outside seating. When we got there our reservation wasn't showing up. After a few minutes, the manager said let me get you a drink at the bar and a table outside will open up. After 20 minutes, they were going to seat us outside. I said to the manager, I thought you were buying us a drink for your error. He said, no I just thought you could wait at the bar. I wont pay for your cocktail. Not sure he understands how customer service works.
