We went for our anniversary dinner. Hemingway cocktail was fabulous. Pear salad and risotto were terrific. My husband got the short ribs with gnocchi which was wonderful. Dessert was chocolate torte - beautiful.
Food is always perfectly prepared, wines pair nicely. My only knock is where we sat was a bit dark. I'm older and like to have decent light but that doesn't take away from the experience. Service always is attentive and good. A bit more expensive but then you get what you pay for and this place is worth every dime.
Sunday dinner: my husband had the $10 entree, cod, and I had the soft shelled crab, a favorite now in season. Chef was willing to accommodate my gluten free needs by leaving off the breading. Delicious! We were both happy with our meals.
The entree, cod, was absolutely superb! Their Sunday night entrees are a real draw. We’ve also attended their wine dinners which are top notch! This is a real neighborhood jewel!
I requested a beer, and was recommended a superb choice.
The meal was perfect!!
The staff was professional and courteous.
We enjoyed a delicious meal - soft-shelled crab was perfect - and spot-on drinks from the bar. Excellent menu and our server was exactly who we needed for the evening.
Consistently impeccable, professional service and delicious food. Everything from starters to dessert was just perfect. Probably the best dining experience we have had in the Kansas City area.
Best in KC
Food was very slow to come out
Visiting my boyfriend in Kansas City and found this neighborhood gem during my foodie research. An amuse bouche of a couple of tasty cheese fritters with a marmalade sauce started the evening off along with the crusty bread and creamy butter. I can be somewhat a picky eater but had no problem negotiating the delicious menu, my guy loved all the selection. We started with the duck empanadas based on Yelp reviews and were not disappointed. Super flavorful filling and light airy pastry, a great start. We both got salads, I went for the satisfyingly crunch pear salad and he for the ceviche which was a generous portion. For entrees, I got the short ribs and he the ribeye. Both were fantastic and we ended up sharing. Unfortunately we were too full for dessert. Wine was the Girard petit syrah which was very tasty and a great accompaniment to the meal. I would definitely recommend the restaurant to others!
I wish they would change the menu more often. Becomes a little institutionalized.
We went for our anniversary and really enjoyed it. The service and presentation were both exquisite. A little pricey for amount but worth it. The tables are a little close together. We felt we were having dinner with the couple next to us. 😜
When the Sunday $10 entree is fish, it always draws us. Trout, fingerlings, parsnips, spinach--you can't go wrong.
Fabulous $10 dinner - lake trout had great flavor. Tables are a little close together, neighboring tables conversations easily overheard.
Amazing dinner! From start to finish it was perfect!
40th birthday dinner made very special by the staff of Story. Great food with an artistic twist.
Our dinner at Story was very good, even though the Sunday night pre fixe was sold out! We learned: earlier than 6:45 on Sunday night!
For out-of-towners, Story is the occasional cosmopolitan experience that we look forward to. Our fellow diners were well dressed and seemingly appreciative of the pleasant ambience.
Amazing food! Definitely will be returning!
Very good food. Service was attentive without being intrusive. The ambience of the restaurant is very pleasant. You could carry on a conversation without difficulty or annoyance from other guests.
I was very disappointed in the Sunday $10 entrée petite filet as was my friend, as well as the couple next to me. I expect a filet to be very tender and this was very chewy and quite rare. I had ordered "medium well or slightly pinkish". I sent it back and it was returned medium rare and still very chewy...couldn't eat it but my friend said she would take it home. A manager saw that I wasn't eating it and comped me which I appreciated. However, neither the manager nor the waiter were very pleasant. I have had several much more pleasant experiences at Story for dinner as well as many great "happy hours" and usually have enjoyed excellent service from the wait staff. I shared this with the couple next to me who said they were glad to hear it as they would not have planned to return otherwise.
Simply spectacular. We had the steak tartare for an appetizer, and the short ribs and mahi mahi for entrees. Everything was presented well and cooked perfectly. The donuts at the end were also amazing. We will definitely be back.
A friend and I were there on March 7 for Wednesday's fried chicken (the only day it is served) and it was wonderful as always. It is not traditional fried chicken, but is boneless, very crispy and served over a very rich crouton with green beans to the side. No potatoes (none needed), very little gravy - but enough to enrich the crouton. A perfect mid-week supper. Service was particularly excellent that night as well.
We're always happy when we choose to go to Story for a $10 Sunday meal and we are able to get it. Our reservation was for 5:30 so this seemed likely and was. We had cod, cauliflower, and fingerlings, all tasty. We also had salads, wine, and dessert. The Sunday special is both a good thing for the restaurant and it's patrons, so we're glad it continues.
The food was outstanding. Little pricey. Great service.
The restaurant itself sports a minimalist decor, which is quite relaxing. Waiter was knowledgeable and unobtrusive. We were allowed a leisurely pace, cocktails and then starters. Food was first rate, and the wine choice recommended by the waiter worked very well. We will definitely return.
Always a great dining experience. Love the Sunday night $10 entree, just add a glass of wine and appetizer to share.
The food is ALWAYS good. The service is always good. I think you will enjoy the ambiance of this restaurant. One of my favorites.
Good service but pricey-not sure I would come back as there are other restuarants in KC more
We had a great Wednesday night dinner of Story’s fried chicken and the best salad in town. Server was excellent, always a positive experience!
We came here on a Sunday. Every Sunday they have a different $10 meal as their special. This week it was beef tenderloin. It we delicious!
Lovely dinner with friends— we had the ceviche appetizer (amazing!) and I had the swordfish for my meal while my husband had short ribs. We both loved our meal. Yum!
The food at Story is consistently amazing. The service the last two times has been average at best which is a little disappointing. I've come to realize great service can compensate for mediocre food but poor service can ruin a dining experience even if the food is incredible. The server was borderline inattentive including the extremely long period between when the salads were left at the table and when the entrees were eventually brought out, by never coming to the table. Story is expensive and I never mind paying a lot for great food and service. In this instance, the food is the only thing that saved this review from being fair. I mentioned this experience to a friend today and she said I was at least the 7th person who had told her lately how poor the service was.
Everything was delicious!
Food which included beet with smoked fish, celery crab bisque, swordfish and veal was very good. Service was good. Would return.
The food was good, however, our first visit and it didn’t start out well. When we walked in for our reservation they sat us at a high top right next to front door - I asked if they could give us another table because I tend to be very cold and I’m short so high tops aren’t great. I was told all tables are spoken for - I thought interesting since I had a reservation and no one asked me if I wanted a high or low top. I said if someone cancels I prefer to be moved - later she moved us but told we had to be done by 8. There were 3 of us 2 ordered beef short ribs one ordered shrimp and grits - dinner came with 2 shrimp and grits and one beef short ribs - when we said we had 2 beef short ribs she told us well the order showed 2 shrimp and grits - finally our waiter said it was wrong and it’s be right out - so 2 meals were cold by the time 3 mea came - not a great first impression
We were there a Valentine's Day celebration and it was excellent. The service and food was very good.
We eat at Story often and we've never had a bad meal there. It is usually reasonably priced for such high quality and well executed dishes. I have eaten at many restaurants in KC and all around the US and Story is up there among the best and is consistent, which is why we come back again and again.
However, the last time we ate there, on Valentine's Day, was not as good as usual. I made the reservation, for my wife and I, months in advance, so I wouldn't miss out. I didn't bother to check whether they would have a fixed menu, or fixed menu and regular menu. As I previously mentioned, we eat out often and I don't mind paying a lot for good food.
I think the Valentine's Day fixed menu price was too high at $95 per person. We chose the optional wine pairings for an additional $45 per person, so we were at $280 just with the dinner and wine. I had a cocktail before dinner and my wife had a half glass of wine before our pairings started.
The menu was 5 courses and all were good. The wine pairings were excellent selections and went well with the dishes. I think for the price of $45 per person, the pours were a bit on the light side - a small half glass per course.
Overall, the food was very good, but the execution was not as perfect as it usually is at Story - they were very busy though. The service was good, but not as good as usual. Normally, I can cut some slack for being busy, but not at this price. With the coffee we had with our dessert, tax and a nice tip, our bill for two was $385. I didn't feel what we got was quite worth nearly $400 for 2.
That said, the regular menu is awesome and we'll be back often as it is one of our favorite places - just not again on Valentine's Day.
Excellent service!! Loved our waiter very personable. Food excellent! Well thought out menu for Valentine’s Day! Thank you!
Valentine’s Day. Booked the dinner, was not aware a pre fixed menu was the only option that evening. $95 per person is a little high, but could be worth it. This was not. Parmesan fritters were great for the first course. One each. Moved onto the salad which was excellent. Scallops was the next course which were cooked perfectly, but the accompaniments were bland and too salty to eat. The braised short rib was next. Dried out and not more than a few ounces. The sides were not one of the better dishes we’ve had there. Dessert was chocolate torte with lemon, not a fan of the lemon but my wife loved it. Chocolate torte however looked more like a dried out brownie. I’m not against a pre fixed menu. Not a fan of it being your only choice however. I eat short rib 3 times a week and was not excited about it for a special occasion. I mentioned this to the server and mentioned I was looking forward to eating the shrimp and grits that night, thinking he might surprise me with a small plate. He did not. Nothing was done to the bill. $95 per person. After a cocktail each and a glass of wine for my wife we were at $300. Needless to say I left hungry. Maybe the last restaurant I would recommend in KC for a special night out.
One of our all time favorite restaurants. It never disappoints.
