Story Ratings and Reviews
The food at Story is consistently amazing. The service the last two times has been average at best which is a little disappointing. I've come to realize great service can compensate for mediocre food but poor service can ruin a dining experience even if the food is incredible. The server was borderline inattentive including the extremely long period between when the salads were left at the table and when the entrees were eventually brought out, by never coming to the table. Story is expensive and I never mind paying a lot for great food and service. In this instance, the food is the only thing that saved this review from being fair. I mentioned this experience to a friend today and she said I was at least the 7th person who had told her lately how poor the service was.
The food was good, however, our first visit and it didn’t start out well. When we walked in for our reservation they sat us at a high top right next to front door - I asked if they could give us another table because I tend to be very cold and I’m short so high tops aren’t great. I was told all tables are spoken for - I thought interesting since I had a reservation and no one asked me if I wanted a high or low top. I said if someone cancels I prefer to be moved - later she moved us but told we had to be done by 8. There were 3 of us 2 ordered beef short ribs one ordered shrimp and grits - dinner came with 2 shrimp and grits and one beef short ribs - when we said we had 2 beef short ribs she told us well the order showed 2 shrimp and grits - finally our waiter said it was wrong and it’s be right out - so 2 meals were cold by the time 3 mea came - not a great first impression
Valentine’s Day. Booked the dinner, was not aware a pre fixed menu was the only option that evening. $95 per person is a little high, but could be worth it. This was not. Parmesan fritters were great for the first course. One each. Moved onto the salad which was excellent. Scallops was the next course which were cooked perfectly, but the accompaniments were bland and too salty to eat. The braised short rib was next. Dried out and not more than a few ounces. The sides were not one of the better dishes we’ve had there. Dessert was chocolate torte with lemon, not a fan of the lemon but my wife loved it. Chocolate torte however looked more like a dried out brownie. I’m not against a pre fixed menu. Not a fan of it being your only choice however. I eat short rib 3 times a week and was not excited about it for a special occasion. I mentioned this to the server and mentioned I was looking forward to eating the shrimp and grits that night, thinking he might surprise me with a small plate. He did not. Nothing was done to the bill. $95 per person. After a cocktail each and a glass of wine for my wife we were at $300. Needless to say I left hungry. Maybe the last restaurant I would recommend in KC for a special night out.
Excellent meal, best in Kansas City!
We moved to Kansas from Chicagoland several months ago. Since then we have been to many restaurants in Kansas City area, but haven’t find one can truly compare to the best restaurants we had experienced in Chicago, until now. Story stands out in its innovative combination of ingredients and wonderful tastes, service is superb and the atmosphere is modern and comfortable.
We will definitely return.
We had an early reservation so the restaurant was quiet. The green salad was surprisingly delicious. I also enjoyed the swordfish which included a sweet potato puree and wild rice -- very tasty. My husband enjoyed the pear & cotija salad and chicken breast with Brussels sprouts. Portions were well sized to allow for dessert...we loved the doughnuts (tiny donut holes) and I would choose something other than the flourless chocolate torte as the malted ice cream was too strong for my taste. The service was friendly, knowledgeable, and well-timed. All in all it was a very nice experience and made for a wonderful evening.
The food is always fantastic: creative, well prepared, beautifully plated and perfect portions.
Story is a place I have been coming to for dinner on special occasions or dinner with friends on
a Sunday evening. One is welcomed, as if going into a friends home , however the wait staff does not get so comfortable and act as if they are part of the seated guests.
This past Sunday evening I was at Story with three friends and the four of us usually make a point of coming their every four to six weeks. The service is normally excellent, but last weekend our waiter seemed unorganized. We had to request bread four times before it was brought to the table and two of our entrees were not cooked as ordered. I will leave the topic for this is not our normal experience when we come to Story. The sevice prior has always been top-notch; I am sure it will be when we next return. Perhaps there was a full moon.
One thing that has always been perfect: the way we are welcomed into Story and the always
interesting and excellently prepared food.
Excellent risotto The monk fish was a little salty for me. Our waiter Daniel was very patient with our young grandson and we all appreciated that. He actually ate all his ravioli and didn't;t notice it was a lamb sauce inside . Carl is amazing!!!! WE are grateful to have Story in our neighborhood.
Visited this Restaurant Friday night and it was AMAZING! Service was great from the time we walked in the door. My husband had the beef short rib and he loved it. I had the tasting menu and every bite was delicious! Travis the bartender came by and chatted with us about the cocktails he made! How awesome was that! I’d recommend anyone to try them! We’ll be back!!
Not a good experience. Not sure how sweetbreads as my appetizer were OK and ten minutes later the manager came out and said my wife’s sweetbread order as an entree couldn’t be filled. The chef wasn’t pleased with the quality. What did I just eat? Poor quality food???? Sounds to me like just a flimsy excuse for over cooking an order and then running out. The manager did comp my entree but it was a disappointing birthday dinner for my wife. We’ll go across the parking lot to Cafe Provence next time.
This chef continues to impress. The beef shortribs and the pork tenderloin and the accompanying sides were delicious. Could not have been more well prepared.
Service was adequate though maybe not as attentive as we would have liked ( perhaps due to restaurant week rush). Wine pricing is a bit high, at $15glass , but the selection was good. Even with two of our four guests opting for the restaurant week selections, the bill with tip still topped $300. Not cheap, but the meals were outstanding. Remains one of our favorite places.
We have eaten at Story before. This time we were here for restaurant week. The food was delicious, but I was surprised there were only two choices. Most of the restaurant week menu's have three options. I enjoyed my meal. The entree was delicious and so was the desert. I think the wine list is a little too pricey!
After hearing good reviews we were excited to try it during restaurant week. We ordered the restaurant week special but was very disappointed. All our main course was a little too salty. The dessert was dry. The only thing that was decent was the soup even though it wasn’t that warm.
The worse part was our whole dinner took a little over 2 hours. After each course we waited about 20-30 minutes for the next course to be served. I know they were busy but I assume they expected this since it was restaurant week. And we only ordered the restaurant week special which I assume was prepared ahead of time.
The food at Story was absolutely excellent; however, the taste did not make up for the pretentiously small portions and high price. My fiance had a wonderful swordfish with meager 'sides' for $38, but had to go home and eat more after dinner. Expect to eat a little bit of great food for a lot of money.
Went with 4 couples for New Years Eve dinner. Prix Fixe menu was a fabulous 6 course affaire served impeccably by outstanding waitstaff! Everyone was amazed by the intricacies of each dish in the way that each ingredient was detectable in each bite.
Could not have expected such a delightful experience in a restaurant located in a strip mall!
Chef Thorne-Thompson and his wife Susan have knocked it over the fence, making our “Story” have a happy ending with happy beginning of a New Year.
This was our second time eating at Story. The food was, again, exquisite. I would not call myself a terribly adventurous eater, but I tried the sweet breads! Loved them. What a great setting to explore new foods! The happy hour is such a deal! They have a fantastic bar- the homemade whiskey cherries in my husband's Old Fashioned were a nice surprise! Can't wait to introduce our friends and family to this place.
Strange occurrence tonight.Been here several times, have always loved it!! However tonight server asked for all courses to be ordered all at once, “chef insists”. We wanted to order appetizers before deciding on dinner, but this wasn’t allowed....said he would come back later after all four of us decided on everything. And, cocktails took 15 minutes to arrive despite only one other table being occupied (was full by the time we left). Still love Story, but hoping this shenanigans goes away.
