Storm Rhum Bar and Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Storm exceeded most of our expectations. The meal was reasonable for the price-point and due to weather, Storm was not very busy.
The only criticism we had was the choice of table. We ended up in the corner near 2 windows, resulting in most of the party being cold. If it had been a big deal, we would have asked to be moved and I’m sure Storm would have been willing to re-seat us.
All things considered, Storm was overall a pleasant experience. Definitely worth repeating.
Our first visit, and we will definitely be back. Our party of 4 had reservations (Open Table), and we were glad we had them. Inside is a huge, curved bar which curves around the partially open kitchen, and was full during our entire stay. Dining tables occupied the left half, and had a very cozy, inviting atmosphere. We were promptly seated by a friendly hostess for our 6:30 PM reservation, and over the next 30 minutes, all tables were occupied. Most of the patrons looked to be in the below 40 age group so the bar atmosphere was vibrant, and the dining area fine for comfortable conversation. Our service was excellent and friendly. The wine list had a limited number of by-the-glass selections, and our server couldn't provide any tasting notes, but did offer to let us try any. A good list of local craft beers is available. Judging from the size of the bar, and the array of bottled spirits behind it, I assume any mixed drink or cocktail would be available. The menu was divided into snacks, small plates, and dinners. We had a snack (3 cheese macaroni with bacon, and roasted jalopenos which was delicious), then shrimp and grits, and goat cheese filled gnocci with fennel sausage, leeks and topped with a fried egg. Both were excellent. We ended by sharing the warm brownie and ice cream, on chocolate ganache and peanuts. I was particularly delighted to find that French press coffee is available, both decaf and regular. There is lots of outdoor seating, so I feel this will be a great choice also when the weather warms. We will count Storm Rhum Bar and Bistro now as one of our favorites in Asheville.
I was in town on a girls trip with my daughter and wanting something local with atmosphere. I read about the restaurant and was so glad we went. I was so impressed with every aspect of this restaurant . So unfortunate that I live so far away!!! If we ever make it to Asheville again it will be on our list of places to go!!
One of our favorites as we are local to Asheville:). We had family in town for Christmas and knew they would enjoy it. We usually sit outside in warm weather. The only downside to our visit was that the seating was VERY CROWDED! Conversation for our group of six was difficult and the table behind me was so close I kept bumping my chair into the person behind me. A table or two should be taken out!! But the drinks and food were delicious!
The food was exceptional. I had the mussels small plate which was a good meal itself. The broth was delicious, the mussels were a good size, but the bruschetta was out-of-this world in taste (could have had more of that!). My husband's steak was perfectly seasoned. He is also a rum connoisseur and enjoyed the rum flight--and can't wait to try more of the quality rums on the menu. My only suggestion--it was my husband's birthday and I noted this in the Open Table comments section. It would have been exceptional service for the staff to have acknowledged this if they had reviewed the notes. Otherwise, why does Open Table have this section?
Place is very nice looking and service was nice. The food was really salty overall. We had some small plates to share and had planned to move to dinner, but decided to close out. We drank so much water to try and get over the saltiness. The best thing (that wasn’t salty) was the mussels dish. Cocktails that we ordered were not impressive- the mojito had a bit too much ginger and the Mai Tai was served without the dark rum layer on top. They added the layer when we brought it to our servers attention.
Very good food. Four of us split the mac and cheese small plate with panko and jalapeño. My wife and I had very good mild venison and excellent rice middlings, along with cherries and kale. The other two split braised short ribs, crispy pork shoulderand goat cheese gnocchi small plates, which both liked a lot and would order again. A little bobble on service, in that the waitress didn’t realize we were one of her tables at first. Later, the gnocchi was very late in arriving, as were several drink orders. But she made up for it by comping our desserts, so all was well in the end. I think this was a bit of an abberation, as service in the past has always been great. The noise level in the place is somewhat elevated, but it is tolerable.
Good service and great atmosphere. However, three of the four entrées we ordered were overcooked, and the other was relatively tough. For the price, we felt like we could do much better elsewhere. This restaurant was recommended by a national publication as the place to try in the state of North Carolina. I think we were misled.
We have dined here many times - from hamburgers to grilled octopus - the food is excellently prepared and beautifully presented. We have not had a bad meal. The wait staff is intelligent and engaging. It is an old building and a bit dark, and some of the furniture goes from shabby chic to just rickety. But on nice nights - they have a lovely side patio. In a town of good restaurants you should try this one.
Would highly recommend this as a stop in downtown Asheville. Loved the atmosphere and concept of the rum bar. The food was the best we had all week. I had the beef coulotte and my husband had the wreckfish..both were excellent! Also nice that they have a parking lot where parking is difficult in Asheville.
We had a great dinner!! This was our second time at Storm and we were just as impressed as our first visit. 6th wedding anniversary dinner date. The waitress was super friendly without being overbearing and the food was delicious on all fronts. We will definitely be back.
It seems to bill itself as a "bar" but Storm Rhum Bar has delicious interesting innovative food served by an intelligent affable wait staff. Don't let the seating scare you off - the tables and chairs are all old and just a bit rickety - the food is so wonderful you will forget what you are sitting on.
