I've always loved Storico because of its location within the New York Historical Society Museum and the creative décor--the plates lining the shelves and the open kitchen. The service is always attentive without being intrusive. (The noise, because the space is nothing but hard surfaces, has always been a problem I was willing to overlook.) But on the last three visits there, spanning the past year, I've been increasingly disappointed by the food and beverage offerings. The menu is fine (except for very limited cocktail offerings, mostly of summery drinks--I wanted a plain old martini!), but the food just isn't as good as it used to be, and portions are laughably small, and I'm not one to equate quantity with quality. I took Canadian friends who travel constantly to Storico over the weekend, and we were disappointed, although the museum made up for it.

The weekend brunch is excellent. There was something for everyone- inlet, eggs Benedict, oatmeal, hamburger, pancakes- and everything was delicious. The value was great. Wish some of these items were on the dinner menu!

The noise level is too high. The service was rapid, perhaps too rapid. The dessert choices were limited. It would have been helpful if the choices of wine by the glass had brief descriptions.

A group of four of us ate here to celebrate a friend's birthday. Everyone was happy with their food (steak salad, beef and potatoes, celery root soup, arancini, tiramisu) and the service was very good. Definitely a nice setting for lunch with attentive service. Will return for sure.

Decor , food, service very lovely. Most convenient and you are able to reserve a table on line The New York historical society is a must visit when you are in NYC and having such a fine cafe on site is a big plus
Menu affords many choices and the prices are fair and everyone can find something appealing

We were looking an early dinner and made a reservation at this lovely trattoria. It is set inside the same building as the New York Historical Society. The food was delicious and the service was very attentive.

Love the atmosphere, service and the food. It is always a treat to eat at Caffe Storico. Gravlax is outstanding. This is one of our favorite NYC spots.

Storico is the restaurant at the NY Historical Society, although you can enter without visiting the Society. It is Italian influenced but menu is broad. Food is simply excellent, nicely plated. Service also excellent. Noise level allows for conversation but not totally quiet. I always eat there when I visit NYHS but it is really a neighborhood gem.

We've been here quite a few times for brunch or lunch, and have always enjoyed it. Not this time. This was our first evening dinner, but we had no hesitation in making a reservation for our party of out of town guests. This negative review shows how service can affect a dining experience. During the reservation process, we asked for a table "out of traffic and away from wait stations." Instead we were seated very close to the front door(s). The way the tables are placed -- quite close with barely an aisle -- meant everyone coming in or leaving the restaurant had to squeeze past my chair, pushing me and the person next to me in the process. After I quietly approached the host that one of our party was celebrating a birthday the next day, and perhaps could they put a candle in a desert to surprise him, the first thing the waiter did on approaching our table was say, "I understand you're having a birthday! Congratulations!" I was incredulous -- the first time this has ever happened in any restaurant, ever. For better or worse, this really soured my evening. The waiter was apparently new. He tried hard but he appeared tentative and awkward. I've tried describing a few examples here, but on rereading them, they each individually sounded petty and snooty. However, taken together, it was clear to all of us that he needed more training. Storico aspires to be a nice, comfortable place, worthy of its setting and decor (and prices). The food is pretty good -- not great, but not disappointing. The striped bass filet was just OK. The scallops were tasty, as was the gnocchi. The Cesar salads were just passable. All of the deserts missed badly -- we had three different ones. (Their version of tiramisu was extremely disappointing, with no shape, no texture and minimal flavor. I could no on, but what's the point?
I guess we'll stick to brunches here.

Since they added more tables and redid the floor it appears smaller. But the food is delicious. The desserts need work.

menu.

This has been a favorite restaurant for years. The food is both reliable and inventive. The menu changes with seasons. The home made pasta is as good as it comes. Deserts do not disappoint. They used to have a nice Italian wine list with depth and value. Recently this has been dumbed down with many fewer offerings. A great pity.

Very good food, a bit unusual, each dish. Strong flavors. The exceptional thing for us: the service was absolutely fantastic. Needed to send back a dish because of a food allergy...no problem, easily and graciously handled. Love the looks and feel of the place.

Very disappointing. We had been there several time in the past and had always enjoyed eating there, but not in the past 12 months. Deciding to go back was a mistake as we did not enjoy it at all. Overly pretentious menu, small portions. Not sure who they are catering to now, but it is definitely not us. We had trouble finding something on the menu to eat and what we ended up ordering just was not very good . While it i a lovely place, the food does not live up to decor. No wy we would consider returning.

A disappointing experience. The menu only offered one dish (beet salad) that a vegetarian could eat. They were unresponsive if chef could add some sides from their other dishes to create a meal. And the coffee was cold. Specialty items that the Chef is excited to provide should not be the only items available. Even the desserts were too exotic.

Storico is the restaurant located in the New York Historical Society. The restaurant is Italian in concept and although there are other menu options that is the way to go. Preparation is simply outstanding and the food delicious. Service pleasant and efficient, even when dining after an event when everyone comes in at once. If you visit NYHS, you should dine here, but you don't have to visit the museum to eat in the restaurant, and it is definitely a plus for the neighborhood.

Everything but the noise is splendid. Noise level is still MUCH too high but it has never stopped us from returning. It’s the crashing & clanging from the kitchen & bar — not voices. BUT, everything else is worth it!

We were visiting the Historical Society of NY and decided to eat on site. We got there as the dinner session was beginning at 5 PM on a Friday. It was empty but we had reservations as we were advised. We were seated and the service was outstanding. Very nice, attentive, friendly. I had skirt steak with potatoes . I ordered to to be medium and it was a bit chewy. Maybe it needed to cook a little more but the potatoes were very good as were the vegetables. I had a lovely glass of red wine. My friend had scallops and sparkling water. He said it was very good. I don't think I would seek the restaurant out if I wasn't visiting the Society because there are many good places to eat in the area. But if you're already there, it's a good place to stop and grab a bite.

Good appetizers, small main course portions, desserts particularly twee: ours was a "deconstructed" tiramisu, which meant a couple of tiny logs of ice cream, with a couple of pieces of chocolate and tiny bricks of sponge cake thrown around the plate. The pork cheeks in the pasta were three or four bacon-like specks. Pretty restaurant, though!
