About this restaurant

  • Romantic
  • Innovative
  • Good for special occasions
Michel and Patricia Jean, owners of Stissing House, bring decades of noted culinary experience, including Provence in New York City, to their restaurant in the Hudson River Valley.
The Jeans came to Dutchess County, NY where they discovered The Stissing House, an historic 1782 tavern, after an almost 20-year run at their New York City restaurant Provence. One of America’s oldest and longest-operating restaurants, The Stissing House features a wood-burning oven and grill sizzling with Michel’s Provençal-inspired cuisine. With a more sophisticated décor but period details intact, The Stissing House has become a landmark culinary destination. The food: simple, delicious, robust and compelling Provençal cuisine. In every meal: seasonal, locally-sourced, organic grass-fed beef, poultry and vegetables. The vintage tavern room features a special cocktail menu drawing locals and visitors alike to eat, drink and socialize at the bar or the tables. Available for private parties as well.

Make it a point to check put this place. Find outstanding, fresh, French-inspired cuisine -- much of it grilled in a gorgeous old brick wood oven -- at this quaint country establishment. Shout out to Tracy, the most knowledgeable and entertaining professional mixologist we know. We work and dine in NYC, but I tell you, she's got'em all beat.

Wonderful food, very very knowledgeable wait staff. Our waitress recommended such perfect beverages to accompany our appetizers. Food was absolutely amazing. Never felt rushed. Cozy French country atmosphere.

Stissing House is so reliable and consistent it’s extraordinary. Owner/chef and his wife care deeply about the food and experience and you can really tell there are real people behind the scenes who do it the old fashioned way, earning every diner’s loyalty by being great every visit. That’s especially hard to do with the challenges of running a fine restaurant in a pretty remote small town. Bravo.

Dining out at it’s best. When wanting to have a “special dining night out” we visit the Stissing House, as we have for many years and never disappointed. You won’t find a nicer, cozier or more comfortable atmosphere, the tavern room is the BEST, Staff is always attentive and food is well prepared and delicious. Great wine selection and usually 1/2 dozen various beers on tap.

This is a very special place to dine. The colonial building is an amazing restoration with plaster walls, the original over two hundred year old exposed brick, fire places, wide board floors, huge beams and beautiful original framed oil paintings. The short ribs were meltingly tender, the burger perfectly cooked and the cocktails sparkling (Well done Tracey!) I think no cozier ambience exists in the area; the magical sense of a trip back in time sticks with you long after you’ve departed. We want to return very soon.
