Stella 34 Trattoria Ratings and Reviews
Last minute, and I needed to find an Italian bistro on a Friday night- this was convenient to my hotel, and had open reservations. Best of all, unexpected I would find a decent meal in a NYC restaurant inside of Macy's, but I did. The cuisine was excellent, the portions appropriate- not too big to be overstuffed, decent wine selections, and good service too, and a view- even for a native NY'er, don't get tired of looking at our great landmarks like the Empire State building.
I'd summarize by saying it's a hidden gem in the area, and I'd go back which is the highest compliment I can give.
This restaurant has a nice view of the city/Empire State Building. Requested a table by the window and that is what we got - beautiful view. The food is creative, tasty and has creative vegetarian options. Service was a bit laid back but not an issue for all of us, nice to not be rushed. Have been here each time we go into the city in January. Highly recommend
We made reservations through OpenTable about 45 minutes prior to arrival. Promptly seated and served. It's was a Friday night, so service understandably a little slow, but quality high and food very good. Had 4 kids with a party of 8, and they didn't blink an eye. Excellent place, low key.
Located in Macy’s Dept store! Recommended by a close relative that lives and works in the city. We wanted something close to our hotel and MSG prior to the Billy Joel concert. Great table for 4 with a view of the Empire State Bldg. Great, prompt service. The 4 of us split the lasagna. Great flavor. The noodles were thinner than any lasagna I’ve eaten before which made it incredibly light and flavorful. My brother- in- law had a mushroom soup that was decadent and rich. We followed that with a little Tiramisu. Again not a traditional Tiramisu, but good flavor. Highly recommend this restaurant. Don’t be fooled because it’s in a dept store.
This is my go-to restaurant for meeting friends and former colleagues when I come into Penn Station from Long Island. It's convenient; the menu is varied and interesting; and the service and ambiance are very nice. The tolerable noise level and the attractive setting are not at all what you'd expect from a restaurant tucked into the corner of Macy's sixth floor.
Stella’s was not as great as expected. The ravioli tasted great but they only give you 4 raviolis. The calzones would have been good because the dough is great but there was hardly no meat only lettuce and no sauce at all. The salad was good but was super small for what you pay. Overall I do not feel the price you pay is worth the food you get. Just a little more would go a long way.
Who knew an excellent meal was to be had inside a department store? We had it on the 6th floor of Macy's with view of the Empire State Building. The mushroom soup was the outstanding selection but the chicken soup was also very good and we liked both the ravioli and the pappardelle. An affogato to share was just right to end the evening not feeling we had overdone it especially this was a splurge during a lo-carb diet! We certainly will return hopefully with guests next time.
Food was good, but not great by any means. One of us didn't receive her plate. We were told not to take pictures beside the window even if there were no one sitting at both window tables, this is a most haughty tone. The restaurant did contact me to receive more information, but then never bothered to write me back. I'm disappointed from start to finish. We will not return.
Not many decent places in the Herald Square area, but Stella 34 was surprisingly good, especially for a restaurant within Macy's where we did not expect much , but the food was very good...and fairly priced. However, wine was overpriced (4X retail cost for the bottle we ordered). Also, one from our party of six did not receive the dishes ordered.
Great meal...found it last minute. We wanted a children’s meal for my daughter, who was above their ‘children’s meal age’ had to be under 10. Don’t know why restaurants do this...not all kids want an adult portion & want simple food. They did make her up a pasta dish which was excellent..my daughter thoroughly enjoyed. We had pizza which was lovely.
Right from the greeting from the hostess the experience was awesome. Our waiter was friendly and professional. Kept glasses filled and looked after us. We had fried butternut squash appetizer that was amazing. Definitely try the sauce that comes with them. We had eggplant parm sliced perfectly thin. Pasta cooked al dente. Nothing was leftover. Everything was excellent. Definitely recommend
As an Italian from Italy, I am shocked to report that this is the most authentic Italian restaurant I’ve been to in the USA. This is not Italian-American ... it’s a restaurant transported straight from Italy beginning with all the appetizers, Primi, Secondi and the Gelato imported from Tuscany. The menu is not your Italian-American menu as it’s the closest menu I’ve seen to being in Italy itself. And all inside Macy’s! I can’t believe that. Best dining/Christmas experience for the family. Bravo!
sat behind walk in's, even though we had a reservation, seated without menus, had to ask for water and bread, asked for all food to come together, it did not, asked for child's meal to come out first, was fired with entrees, 1:45 reso. Restaurant was not busy enough for the lack of service and detail.
Food was on point as usual.
Service was simply terrible. We asked to change our table as we were right in the passage of all people, the waiter told us that it was not possible despite the fact that there were two empty tables beside us, and “that we were lucky we got a table”. I then reminded him we were not lucky, as we had a reservation. We then ordered a bottle of wine , we were 2 friends waiting for the 3rd one, and he said, “ a bottle for 2 People”. Excused me? We then wanted to order appetizers, he would not take our order until we were ready to order the full dinner... frankly never seen that happening. Food was just average. This was my second time at this restaurant, and certainly the last.
Went for dinner while visiting New York. Been new to the place. It was not easy to find the restaurant if you entered via Macy’s. Anyway service was excellent at the restaurant. Arancini is a must to order as appetizer. Perfectly cooked. For entrees we ordered short rib and girrarosto pollo. Both were great choices. Dessert we ordered boccanera. Great food.
My mom and I were very excited to celebrate my 40th birthday with dinner at Stella 34. View of ESB was amazing! But we were so disappointed in our service. We had to ask for refills, bread, salt, etc. Our server was never around, and our salads came out at the same time as our cold food. 85$ for two people with no alcohol! Sad!
Overpriced and bland food not worth it.
We were happy to spend $$$ on great food and experience, but that is not what we paid for. We left as soon as we could, and enjoyed birthday dessert across the street in our hotel! It was wonderful! The staff was the best I’ve seen anywhere, and the food was delicious! We enjoyed several meals there, and each time we were welcomed back like family and given their best table. Eat at Martinique Cafe at the Radisson on Broadway! Beautiful and quiet inside with window seating!
I've been to Stella's many times and never have been disappointed. The food, service, noise level make it a great place to go. Who would think you'd find such a place on the 6th floor of Macy's! For small plates, try the meatballs. Delish! If you're going to get a pizza and want something unusual, try the butternut squash - very unique. And the chocolate mousse cake for dessert is sure to please any chocoholic. The wine list is decent and will not bankrupt you. And the view of the Empire State Building is outstanding, especially at night!
