Steel Restaurant & Lounge - Dallas Ratings and Reviews
Where do I start? The waiter was super nice, but possibly overwhelmed last night. First of all, we were brought to a partially set table with only 3 chairs and we were 4 people with a reservation. There were enough other tables with 4 chairs and set up properly. Not quite sure why the host felt the need to squeeze us in between other full tables, when there were sufficient tables elsewhere. They didn’t have the bottle of wine I ordered, so they offered us one that was similar....that can happen, I understand. Secondly, the appetizers never showed up.....it was only after 50 minutes of waiting and us asking, did something show up, the edamame. Four other tables around us, that filled in after we ordered, received their appetizers ahead of us. We pointed that out to our waiter as well. The wine was always poured by one of us at the table, never by the waiter. When the sushi appetizers arrived, we had noticed that the same plates had gone by our table in our waiter’s hands and back to the kitchen before finally landing at the correct table, ours. We don’t know if this was the kitchen’s fault or our waiter....regardless, very disappointing and frustrating. The mussels I ordered came cold to the table, so they were replaced, only to receive them again in the same condition. These were not consumed obviously. They promised to take them off of the bill, which they did. Despite multiple apologies from several of the staff at Steel, things never improved. The Hot Rock appetizer arrived after 70 minutes, and was way overpriced for what it is. The waiter then came to explain that the kitchen “can’t bring it together to get the Soft shell Crab done”. That was obviously also taken off the bill. The only items worth eating were the sushi appetizers and the salmon tower. We left hungry and extremely frustrated. It’s a shame actually, as I have never had the need to write such a review, but this experience left us speechless!
The food was very good!
For the appetizer, we had the Pot stickers, which were tasty. The main entree I had the Mt. Fuji roll and Crab & Mango egg roll, both of which complimented one another. My dining partner had the Chilean Sea Bass, which looked and smelled delicious. I was told it was really flavorful. The portion of fish was just right!
As for the decor and atmosphere, it was really cool. The only issue was that the music was a little too loud for my dining partner who wears a hearing aid. We had to lean in towards one another to hear each other.
Overall, Steel is a great neighborhood restaurant and look forward to exploring the menu!
We went for dinner on a Saturday night. The parking is the first turn off: there is none. Street parking is non-existant so you'll need to valet or park in the Centrum garage - which has no access to the restaurant other than walking up the ramp you drove down.
When we arrived, the restaurant had a nice vibe to it and the right amount of dim lighting. I could see but it was a nice dimness. The hostess seated us right away (we had a reservation) and told us our server's name and said she would be right over. The restaurant had people in it but wasn't all that busy. Maybe a bit more than half full? The waitress never showed up, and the hostess had a good eye at me getting perturbed that we hadn't been waited on, so she went in the back to get someone else. Kudos to her because I said nothing and she fixed it. Our new server was very nice and pleasant. He took our order and everything was good.
We had the ahi tower plus 3 additional rolls. Everything was good! The tower was really good! The prices, however, were inflated. I wouldn't label it a ripoff, but it's definitely more than other places of equal caliber. I would say I would come back, however it wouldn't be my first choice for sushi because of the pricing and parking. It was good though, and a great place for a date from a lighting and vibe perspective.
I came with my boyfriend to celebrate my birthday. He would have rated this experience much lower. The main problem was service. I ordered the high roller ($25) but received a cherry blossom roll ($20). This was "on the house". However, I ate the first roll that was delivered to me because I was hungry, but I still had to pay for the more expensive roll that I did not eat... because I was full from the roll that I didn't order. The host told me they were going to bring me a birthday cake, but I had to remind my server of this after we had paid for the meal. There were only 2 servers in the entire restaurant on a busy Saturday night. I don't think this was a problem with my server as much as a problem with management.
the service was very slow and inattentive. the food was bland an way overpriced. I've had far superior shrimp fried rice at fast food take-out than was my $30 order at Steel. Even the valet was inattentive. My date had to open her own door. Won't be going back
Wonderful gathering with friends.. Laura, waitstaff person, was outstanding..great service..recommendations..great personality..Beautiful presentations..tastee courses..ambience gorgeous. Could actually converse at the table..validated parking by rest. when using garage. Real treat and would highly recommend.
Dinner was enjoyable. Waitress was very nice. Sushi was tasty for the most part although the one roll that was topped with steak was not as good as I had hoped. But that is part of the adventure of trying a new restaurant. Sometimes things are great, some not so much. This was worth another visit just to try some more of the menu later.
We loved our dinner, the friendliness of the wait staff, host and a visit from the head chef. The food was incredible and best Ahi tuna tower we have ever eaten. Sake sampler was fun, some of the best drinks we've had and Chilean Sea Bass was flavorful, tender and enjoyable. Everything about this experience was fabulous!
Steel has long been our go to restaurant in the neighborhood. I've enjoyed the food, the ambiance, and the staff. I can no longer say that the experience meets the standards that I had grown to expect and enjoy. We ate their on Monday evening with two other couples, all of whom had been to Steel with us before. Our crowd eats early so our 6:30 reservation was normal. The place was pretty much empty except for a gauge of staff in the corner who pretty much ignored us. My wife and I were early, so we had our usual at the bar. The bar manager and his service was the high point of the evening. It was all down hill from there. We joined our guests at a table and then waited and waited for someone to take their drink order. I finally had to flag someone down. Then we waited and waited for our appetizer, then waited and waited for the menus, then waited more for someone to take our order. All of this in a restaurant completely unfettered by any other guests. Maybe another table or two. We finally got our food, which everyone thought was very good…as usual. Two couples had asked to split entrees and were graciously accommodated.
The place was pretty much empty when we left as well. I'm afraid they are not going to make it. It's a shame. They should be, and were at one time, the best Asian Fusion place in town and had top rate staff. No longer.
Anniversary, Saturday night. Has always been a favorite. When for the signature dish, whole crisply fried Red Snapper. Saturday night, early reservation, told they were out, had sold three the night before and were out. Bummer. We were dressed up as we remembered it being a classy spot. Seated by a guy in flip flops, Jean cut offs and a tank top wearing a ball cap. Obviously the format here has changed. No longer a classy spot. Never will go back
The service here is absolutely top-notch. Some of the best service I've ever had in Dallas. The food was quite good as well, but it didn't quite match up to my expectations based on the price. The Crab & Mango Spring Rolls were some of the best spring rolls I've ever eaten in my life. Absolutely amazing job on those. I would also highly recommend the Mt Fuji roll, as it was excellent. The Firecracker roll was about average, but seemed to be missing something -- some kind of sauce other than the drop of sriracha perhaps. The Cajun roll was an absolute disaster. The fried crawfish was way overcooked and tough, and it seemed to be the only thing in the roll. Most of the crawfish roll fell apart after being picked up because it had nothing to hold it together. I would recommend that the restaurant add cream cheese to this roll to improve its flavor, consistency, and integrity.
The atmosphere was very nice. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a date night, as the low light and energetic music made for a fun evening out.
Apart from that, the prices were a bit high for what you receive -- while it is among the best sushi I've had in Dallas, there are other places that are significantly better for half the price. Sure, the service was excellent, but ultimately when I go out to eat, my purpose is to enjoy good food. I can forgive mediocre service if the food is excellent, but that relationship is not reversible.
Wasn't very crowded yet service was extremely slow, waters were not kept fresh, and they didn't bring out what we ordered. Had not been here in a couple of years but not close to the experience I remembered. Likely will be another long while until I return.
Steel was slightly off their game. We have been there many times. This time was lacking. They were out of the wine we ordered with no alternative. We ordered martinis with stuffed olives, they were out of those. When mentioned they made some and brought them out. The entree was 25 minutes after the appetizers. Good food, just a bit off their usual excellence.
This was a go to place a number of years ago but unfortunately the restaurant was not able to accommodate a gluten free experience for my wife so we left. The Exec Chef was very nice about it but the wait staff was clearly uneducated regarding food allergies & sensitivities. We will reassess in the future.
I came here with a friend for the happy hour. On Thursdays women get select sushi and appetizers free with the purchase of a drink. Our waitress, Daveda, was amazing. She explained the happy hour special to us and checked on us frequently. Our food and drinks were delicious. Altogether I spend $16 + tip for a quality drink and filling appetizers. I highly recommend this place, and I'll be back.
It was our anniversary, 31 years. It was perfect the service was outstanding but let me tell you the FOOD! I have never tasted such perfectly cook dishes , I had the shaken beef and my husband had the sea bass, wow I am glad we shared cause both were perfect!
I went for the ladies night where they do 2 free rolls with a drink on Thursdays.. Really great deal. Service was super slow but I think it is a new restaurant so they are still learning. I would go again, and would recommend. It is kind of hidden, so you have to know it is there.
