Steel Cactus - Southside
The happy hour specials were great and the staff was very nice BUT the restaurant is not run well. The ordering system was malfunctioning so our 3 YO's cheese quesadilla came out after our food (not good for a hungry child) and when we ordered dessert they didn't have any spoons so the waitress had to bring us plastic ones. They servers really tried their best with what they had to work with but overall the restaurant is not run / managed well and it shows.
The hostess would not seat us because she said that they did not check their open table reservations.
As far as basic Mexican cuisine at a good price, you'll do well to go to the Steel Cactus. The menu isn't overly extensive but has everything you need. I will say when I ordered the Mexican Street Corn I expected it on the cob but it was not. And I know it's supposed to be spicy but it was a little overboard as far as that went. And we had to ask for salsa which was weird...should be automatic.
The table was dirty when we got there. The server had to give us a new table. The guac came out 10 min after the rest of the sides. They also wouldn't honor a groupon we had even though the fine print contradicted what they said at the restaurant. The food wasn't great either. We probably won't go back.
Booked reservation with Open Table. Arrived no reservation on hand. However we were sat right away so no big deal. Server was attentive but seemed overworked and business was understaffed. Ordered 1800 Reposado, charged for it but was served regular 1800 by bar. Twice. Never told they were out and never until we asked the bar. Some of the meals were barely warm
We had a few mishaps at our visit. First, the hostess told us that the OpenTable reservation didn't work (that the system wasn't working), even though we had a confirmation. We gave our name and sat at the bar right next to the hostess desk. After about a half hour, she came to find us and said she couldn't remember who we were. Okay. We sat at a table near the window and it was absolutely freezing! The kitchen was a little slow, but since it was Saturday night, okay. When the food came out, the sides weren't as hot as the main. The food was excellent and priced well. Families should come earlier because it is fairly loud and very popular with 20-somethings. The bar looked hopping, lots of margaritas being served. I would probably go back for lunch and make sure that we weren't near the front window. Not sure why their reservation system wasn't working, so I recommend calling to confirm, even though that defeats the purpose of OpenTable!!
Hannah was our server she was great, very attentive and informative! Thank you!
Service was good but food was fair. Ordered fajitas and the portions was so small for the value
It was freezing the entire time we ate. Not just freezing but there was a breeze. The heat was supposedly on. Our service was horrible. Food was mediocre at best. Never again
The food was decent. Our service was terrible, even though we were the only table in there. Our waiter was trying, so I don't blame him. I think he needs more training, so I blame management. The waiter answered our questions about the menu completely wrong. I asked for chicken quesadillas for my daughter and got cheese quesadillas. The champagne flutes were disgusting. When our waiter took them to the bartender, she came over and said, "They aren't dirty. They are just super old plastic." Well, perhaps they should invest in some new ones. We sat finished with our meal for 15 minutes before we finally saw our waiter to wave him down and get our check.
