This is an outstanding eating experience for the business professional and for a group of friends on a Saturday night. We went on a special occasion and we were treated very well. The food was delicious and the service was excellent I recommend a reservation first as seating is limited or a better word is exclusive.
The banquettes along the outer wall are low. Had to ask for a pillow as the table too high to eat comfortably. Food excellent, service excellent. It is loud, so quiet intimate conversation not possible in outer room.
We had a very enjoyable business dinner at State of Grace. I can't stop thinking about the red fish on the half shell, it was perfectly executed and simply delicious! Our table also shared the spaghetti squash, brussel sprouts and enchiladas, and I had the beet salad, all of which were excellent. The service was impeccable. Definitely recommended!
We went for their Sunday Dinner service to celebrate our anniversary. Their menu is more limited on Sunday and I don't know why, but it is. Our waiter, Carl, was outstanding and so were our drinks. Their bartender is making true craft cocktails. The Sunday Dinner starts off with biscuits and jam, which were excellent. Then they bring you a salad of simple greens and light dressing. They need to raise their salad game badly, as it was easily the most bland and uneventful thing we tasted the entire night. We ordered the pork shank ragu and the fried chicken entrees. The chicken was delicious and generous in its portion. The pork was slightly less delicious and much less generous in its serving size. A couple next to us had the catch of the day filet and they were equally disappointed in its size though they said it tasted fabulous. Their dessert option is also limited on sundays to just the coconut cream pie. It was good but extremely sweet. So sweet that two or three bites are sufficient to sate the craving. Overall, its a four course meal for $29 per person which is a pretty good value. We would like to go back on another night when the full menu is available to really see how they shine.
Would definitely recommend at least one visit to S of G because of the uniqueness of both the menu and and preparation of the familiar dishes being served different than what most are used to. Sunday Dinner started with a delicious biscuit and seasonal cranberry jam. The table was then served a green salad with a very light vinaigrette dressing - nothing to brag about. The fried chicken entree I decided on was perfectly cooked with a spicy/honey taste and crunchy bite - very good! Our table shared a very strange squash presentation (looked like a hollowed out russet potato - wasn't good), twice baked potato (just ok), and very tasty mac and cheese for our sharable sides.
Our final course (of course) was dessert - a choice of mixed fruit or coconut pie - OPT FOR THE PIE!!! It was delicious and probably not as good for me as I would hope, but man, it was amazing!
The Chicken fried steak, Pork Shank Ragu, and Gulf Catch (Redfish) were also eaten at our table - all very good, but sneaky spicy (if ya know what I mean). Definitely recommend, but doubt we will return just because so many places around have so many good reviews.
I really like the restaurant and the service. My issue is with the menu....it's too hipster. Why not just call things what they are (appetizers) instead of Opportunities & Standards? And what is up with your premiere beef dish being a $69 strip steak? While it was delicious, for the price I would've expected a filet. My wife and I skipped the appetizers in order to share a dessert, but when we saw the meh choices, we decided to skip them too. All in all, you have a nice restaurant...but the menu needs work.
Excellent dining experience. My husband loved it. Wonderful cocktails, appetizers, lump crab, red snapper and the roasted oysters were amazing, flavorful, oaky, great vibes and service. Excellent dessert and cappuccino. We'll bring a larger group with us next time. Didn't take a picture of roasted oysters and Felix enchilada but 100% delicious. A must.
My mom and I had the BEST dinner!
-hush puppies: sooo good, but too my much for two people! We had quite a few left
-duck carnitas: best cooked main entree I’ve ever had. Mole sauce was great, but super happy with our decision to get it on the side.
-brussel sprouts: almost didn’t get them, but so glad we did!!!
Service was great!!! On the way out, they gave us free cookies. Couldn’t have made a better choice. Will definitely go back!
Great restaurant! We loved it.
Went to the Thanksgiving buffet and it was awesome. Everything they had was delicious. I love the regular service but assumed the buffet would not be as good. It was outstanding. We plan on going back next year.
My wife and I came here for our 3rd wedding anniversary and had the best experience. We can’t say enough good things about the atmosphere, staff, and food. We highly recommend that you request Dominique as your waiter. He knows his stuff and goes above and beyond for his customers!
We’ve been twice and both times the food has been great. The deviled eggs are the best!
I didn’t cate for the menu selections. We had a hard time choosing and didn’t care for the food.
Service is wonderful. Food full of bright bold flavors. Cocktails were delicious. The place is beautiful and has a fun atmosphere. A must go!!!
Wonderful dining experience. Our waiter was exceptionally helpful by recommending us some dishes that he enjoyed. My favourite was the hush puppies - delightful combination of sweet and savoury with a luscious cane syrup butter.
Amazing! The wait staff was very kind and paid great attention to detail!
We had a wonderful time!!! we will be going back again for happy hour.
As always SOG had a great oyster selection. Their shucker is a real pro. My martinis were perfect and the service was great. I enjoyed the experience totally.
Great ambiance and service. Also the scallops were made to perfection!
Excellent venue for our Anniversary dinner. Service was unmatched (really good). Only complaint was one dish that was served a little cooler than lukewarm. Easily fixed.
If you wanna are blessed enough to get Megan as your server, and she offers to craft a menu for your group- DO IT.
Ambiance was super
One of our best restaurant experiences recently!
The food and service is amazing! I have never been disappointed. Highly recommend.
Good food, great service, good fun, nice atmosphere, valet parking plus eager to please management. Can recommend it.
Meagan was great! Manager checked on us frequently while we dined. From cocktails to the brunch selection... our family enjoyed everything! It’s always a more enjoyable experience when the service is on point.
We had a great night and the food and drinks were fantastic. This was our first visit but we will be back for sure.
Celebratory birthday dinner. Upscale crowd. Perfect service. It was a bit noisy, but acceptable level for a mostly full house. The food was delicious.
The service is spot on and they go out of their way to make the night special. Cocktails are made to perfection and the food is both interesting and flavorful. Great for special occasions.
The oysters were great, as always and the service was impeccable.
Ambience was nice, moderate noise level. Food and service were excellent! Waiter even surprised us with a dozen oysters, on the house. Our reserved table was ready as soon as we arrived. Everything I look for in a restaurant and more!
Food was excellent and service was great. My wife and I can’t wait to go back!
Food quality was excellent, service was quite good (though they were seriously disorganized in getting us seated, never mind that there were only two groups up front). However --- if you give them a try you might want to bring along a battery-powered lamp for your table. The front (main) room is well lit, as is the bar area. The back area is very poorly lit; the light levels are kept far too low to, say, be able to read the wine list. I could barely read the menu.
We sat at the oyster bar and had an amazing time chatting with the shucker! Great food great drinks and great service!
I had only been for lunch, my friend had only been for lunch and my husband had never been to State of Grace. Everything was fantastic! The service was especially great-just enough attention but not overbearing.
We will be back for dinner again soon!
We are fairly new to Houston and finding great restaurants is our quest. We may have found one of our favorites. State of Grace was excellent. The octopus was the best we’ve ever had. The atmosphere was warm and cozy. The service was great and our waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful with his recommendations. We’ll be back!!!
It was oysters happy hour, it was great
To say the meal was life-alteringly good might be an overstatement, but I remember life before having the octopus and I don't want to go back to that state. And while the food alone is enough to justify many visits to State of Grace, you would be a fool not to partake from their cocktail list which has nothing but first round draft pick quality concoctions. Not only are the food and drinks nearly unbeatable, but the service should be the gold standard all other restaurants seek to achieve. We've dined many times and would recommend every employee we've ever encountered. Somehow you just can't go wrong here - with ANYTHING! But, if you're somehow not yet convinced, the gingersnap cookies they give you on the way out are worth the price of admission. Seriously. Do not under any circumstance decline the gingersnap cookie on the way out.
Ps. If you are still on the fence about checking out State of Grace, go at lunch time for dollar oysters. ::mic drop::
Food was top notch and the service was better. We sat at the bar because we were early for our reservation and ended up eating at the bar. Loved this restaurant and would be back in a heartbeat.
What a fabulous place. Just lovely. Chefs bar are very romantic, the rooms are beautiful, the food terrific and Dominick a dream of a server. Go! Get the queso shrimp and the crab hush puppies and the burger is one of the best in the city. With or without bernaise frys.
