State Bird Provisions
Delicious as always
Servers were incredibly variable. Some were wonderful and incredibly pleasant. Others were incredibly rude and condescending.
Great atmosphere, super service, and an amazing variety of tasty bites. The best part is the food starts coming as soon as you are seated. You can choose plates when you are ready and at a pace that is perfect for you! We will definitely return, again and again. BTW many gluten free options and they take special care to inform you about every dish. I felt like the whole restaurant assited with choosing plates.
We sat at the bar seats overlooking the kitchen which was enjoyable because we interacted with the chefs who were friendly and who happily explained what they were cooking. Most plates were well thought out in concept / ingredients and they came out generally well. However, while some plates were truly outstanding others were just meh and their description sounded better than their execution. Service was definitely hit and miss. The restaurant itself is a bit small with tight quarters and rather loud. Due to the dim sum style theme of multiple dishes - often at the same time - coupled with the small space it has a frantic / frenetic energy to the dining experience. Perhaps that is on purpose to quickly rotate diners in and out all night. Its a different kind of dining experience which we appreciated trying but not for on the regular. Overall an interesting experience but there are lots of options around town.
Everything was pleasant, enjoyable and fun!
Food was innovate and unique. We really enjoyed the fried quail and the ice cream sandwiches. Staff was very accommodating.
Some of the best food you can find!
Great unusual food
Creative approach with Dim Sum style serving. Service I wouldn't exactly call with and the ambience feels a little bit "too cool for school"
It is a very casual restaurant and has a very young hip vibe; part of its charm!
An unusual formula for bringing food to a table and it all worked very well.
We thoroughly enjoyed every single offering. Many varied flavours and combinations. Overall fantastic food. I never said wow, so no 10/10 dishes but every dish was a 9.5.
Kudos to this place to create such an unusual formula; part of the overall delightful experience.
Had a lovely experience dining at State Bird provisions again. Lovely concept and well executed.
Excellent service and food. Was seated right away at the counter! Got to see the chefs in action!
We went for a late, after-theater supper and this place was hopping! The food was inventive but delicious, the service attentive and we all enjoyed ourselves immensely.
I wish they brought out a candle for my moms birthday. I wrote it in and it was stamped on the menu but they didn’t bring one out with our desserts.
I tried this place again, since I didn’t know if I really liked it. The second time confirmed that I didn’t care for all of the food, just some.
In comparison, I really love The Progress, and have been there 3 times. Every single time, the food is outstanding.
So if you’re debating to try State Bird or The Progress, do The Progress first.
Liked 4 (trout chips and dip, mushroom dumpling, Vietnamese pork belly, buckwheat pancakes with beef tongue) of 8 things we tried. Only 2 of which were delightfully at the level of creativity and skill you expect to get from a place like this. Overall the rest were just OK which means way overpriced for the end product. Also too loud. Hospitality is 👍🏼. Try if you want but I would reserve my recommendation and am not likely to go back there myself.
Very very noisy. Wait staff had to shout to be heard. Conversation was difficult. Food carts were rushed. Need to pace. Too much reliance on chili seasoning. Strawberry ice cream sandwich dessert unremarkable.
my wife and i were traveling to sf for the weekend. we arrived for dinner 15 min early and waited by the door for 10 minutes without seeing the hostess. when she showed up, she was rude and told us they weren't ready for us yet, which was fine, because we're flexible. however, she ended up seating us in the way back by the bathroom at a four person table...so that was not fun.
interesting concept. food quality was "good" but because the food is mostly passed around on trays, the warm food options tend to be colder than you want. i might recommend someone to sit at the bar and order off the menu not from the trays. unfortunately, i will not go back because of the hostess and where we were seated.
Really liked the concept but a little disappointed in the food. Every dish was good enough but nothing stood out.
What an amazing meal! Awesome dim sum style service and great servers. Like the communal service style. Had the best glass of wine ever! It was a lovely anniversary dinner!
Loved the tapas like dishes that came up on the cart and the ambience!!! Will go again!!
great food! loved sitting at the counter. excellent service - friendly and knowledgeable about the food!
Birthday dinner for my wife. Food was good. Loved the dim sum presentation. Very “energetic”, loud but fun atmosphere. Highly recommend trying at least once.
I loved the Dim Sum concept. Service was excellent - staff is very social and helpful. All of the dishes were wonderful; highly recommend the ribs and quail. One of the best experiences this year. Thank you!
The food and service was amazing and I will go back for sure. I thought the music was too intense...
This was my 3rd visit in 3 yrs and the WOW factor never diminishes... I love asking a friend to join so I can see their delight when they taste every single dish. Just such a unique top notch experience while remaining very affordable and low key. I love that it's such a comfortable non-fussy atmosphere but if you want to talk about a dish you are going to get a history book full of information on that dish! Knowledgeable staff, great atmosphere, outstanding & interesting food...can't beat it!!!
The quail is pretty good. The plates are very light in flavor so I would not recommend this cuisine to people expecting strong aged and salty foods. Nonetheless quite a nice experience.
One of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. I can’t believe it took me so long to go. I love the tapas or dim sum style service. You get to try everything and everything is amazing!!
Food was great and so was the service.
We had 5:30 reservations and lining up to get in was confusing. Several different lines. We were l lucky to get to reservation desk in early part of line and seated in the booths where it's much more quiet and enjoyable.
Great food delivered with style. Fantastic value!!!
Not amazing. Over cooked steak. Not enough flavor to dishes. Wine menu was mediocre. No cocktails.
Food cane too quickly
Dinner felt rushed
Noise level was too loud
Otherwise we greatly enjoyed our experience
Both the dining style (dim sum) and the flavors and food combinations were unique and yummy
Excellent restaurant with unique but delicious dishes and great service.
I was so ecstatic to have gotten a reservation, and I honestly, really wanted to like State Bird Provisions. The dishes were small, expensive, and average tasting. Nothing tasted bad, but nothing tasted good. I wouldn't mind paying more for dishes in small portions if they tasted outstanding, but this was definitely not the case with any of the 11 plates I ordered. No matter how many dishes I tried or how much I wanted to enjoy the restaurant, I can't lie to myself or anyone else and say that I enjoyed the dining experience.
I came here for celebrating my friend’s birthday. Because of dim sum style, it was a bit rushed. I prefer go to Progress.
Food services come first and it was hard to order drink.
Love the various dim sum
The service and food were excellent! I brought my mom here and really enjoyed the dim sum vibes.
Wonderful birthday dinner, with birthday candle and everything!
Small place so reservations are a good idea. Very interesting food combinations served from menu or dim sum cart. Staff is friendly and efficient. Everything is worth a try. Highly recommend this restaurant. And yes you should try the state bird.
Great, creative food. I’m not crazy about the serving concept as it interrupts conversation
