State Bird Provisions
I would come back with another person. As a solo dinner, it wasn't the greatest. I was sat in the middle of the dining room at a two top like I got stood up. Would have loved to try more food but to be honest I felt too uncomfortable. Asked for a different seat upon sitting and midway through. With the dim sum sort of style, it's not geared to solo dinners.
Fantastic experience. I went with friends and we all enjoyed the concept and beautiful wine. The service is on par. The food is fantastic and flavorful. Do yourself a favor and go!
It is hard to get reservations at this restaurant. The put together unusual pairings of ingreadients and generally end up with very interesting flavors and textures. Not all dishes we tried were outstanding and since it is a "dim sum" style of service (trays and carts of food offerings continue to come around to table during your stay), you can easily rack up quite a bill! It is a relatively small restaurant with an open kitchen and pleasant and hip environment. I would certainly return, and try other dishes.
Pure and tasty products. Delicate and sophisticated (in a good way) cuisine. Very sharp yet discrete service. You don’t want your diner to ever end.
Love the dimsum-restaurant style of serving the food. Food was excellent!
great flavors and good food. way too noisy and loud. svc mixed because staff too busy - friendly when able to flag down.
Was extremely excited to try this restaurant, but thoroughly disappointed. Meal had no rhythm and service was sub par. Food was ok, some things were delicious some flopped.
Didn’t meet my expectations, some dishes were standout, others really disappointing. Service was slow, took forever for them to greet us, fill our water, and explain the menu.
The food was absolutely delicious. I'd go again in a flash. We got there when it opened and the music was too loud but someone noticed and turned it down. We had to wait a bit for service but not too too long. Friendly and unpretentious.
The food was ok. Loved the quail! Lentils and tomatoes were unfortunate. Thought the lentils were too dry and weird. I think overall the food was too complex, too many ingredients, too salty too. The garlic bread with cheese was not good! We loved the hip atmosphere and the waiters were awesome!! I know quality control is hard. I just thought the insight would be helpful. I'd try it again, especially if someone else was buying. PS. Surprisingly priced Right!!
This is one of the best restaurants in SF and has been for a long time. The food is incredible, the service is fantastic and I can’t wait to go back. If you get a reservation, go and don’t miss it.
The things that were good, were over-the-top good. However, many items were just “meh”. Service was friendly, concept was fun. Overall I lived the experience, but many quality was inconsistent
Amazing experience at State Bird tonight. Excellent service and the food was incredible! Can’t wait to go back.
An incredible culinary experience. The flavors and composition of the dishes we tried were incredible and definitely unique. I love the feeling of leaving a restaurant knowing I likely wouldn’t be able to have that meal anywhere else. Highly recommend!
The expectations were high and we were not disappointed. Interesting menu if you are willing to try new things.
Experiencia nueva e inolvidable, no acudan sin reservación.
Awesome experience, incredible food, and great staff! Will definitely be back in the future~
Worth all the tremendous hype, somehow. Scrumptious, exquisite, rapturous.!
Food was excellent with rich flavors. Presentation was good and servers were good in describing the various dishes.
What a fun, unique, and delicious experience to eat here! Everything we tasted was so yummy and we tried lots of different dishes. We sat at the counter and loved watching the chefs cook and felt very in the action of the restaurant which provided a very cool experience.
Food was very interesting and mostly well prepared. Any dish involving noodles was way under al dente. Salting was occasionally taken beyond the edge.
Sound levels were deafening. Music was unrecognizable - just added to the noise. Dim Sum pass service was cool for awhile, then got to be intrusive/excessive. Maybe a Do Not Disturb sign could be provided. Quite a scene - probably fun for a young group of 4 or 6. Don’t go for a romantic date for two, unless you’re tired of hearing each other.
Great experience, fantastic food at a reasonable price. Fun to be able to try different small plates in the dim sum style table service. Everything was excellent.
Great at accommodating some unique allergies
Corn mochi was the only good dish. Spare ribs, pork belly, and the state bird were only mediocre and for the taste, about 4 times more expensive than it should have been. So dissapointing, didn't even bother to have dessert and went elsewhere to have a real dinner.
My wife and I have been coming to State Bird Provisions almost every year since 2015, every time the food here was great, there were a lot of surprises and delights. Not this time thought, the service is still good as usual, however the quality of the food significantly degraded, not as many dim sum were offered, the whole dining experience was boring, we ended much earlier than we expected. If this is your first time here, by all means come and enjoy. If you have been here before, this is probably not worth it.
Wasn't expecting to have a "dim sum" style dinner. The dishes that all came around were EXCELLENT. We literally didn't pass a single cart. Our wait staff suggested 2 dishes from the fixed menu (the State Bird & the Mochi) and pick & choose from the carts. Everything was EXCELLENT. Oysters w/ kimchi was phenomenal. The Mochi dish was my fav. Planning on coming back in a few months, as he reservations are always booked on the main nights.
Excellent innovative cuisine a mix of east and west. stand out dish was the squid with hand rolled garlic noodles baby bokchoy and allium sauce, delicate yet punchy. Everything was excellent, just pace yourself and book early. Staff v helpful no attitude and great playlist. Comprehensive wine list tried some Hungarian Tokaj and a German Scheurebe. Great value even with Australian dollars
A superb & very memorable experience. The staff were all very friendly and helpful.
I enjoyed the variety of food and service
Food was mostly good to excellent except for:
1. the garlic noodles which had very little hint of garlic and the udon was not cooked through. Chewing on partly uncooked flour is no fun.
2. Lamb sausage was quite ordinary.
Noise was deafening to the point that we couldn’t have any conversation. This is a big problem with older customers like the four of us. I don’t think we will be returning because of the noise
For all the hub bub about this place the food was not up to standard.
I had garlic squid noodles and the chef steak.
The noodles had no hint of garlic in them, and they seemed undercooked, the squid was great though. The chefs steak, albeit cooked medium rare was tough and unappetizing. I finished the meal but was not thrilled about paying a premium price for what I got. I hope this helps others make an informed
I was so impressed by the food and wonderful service, it was a perfect evening for the two of us. Everyone looked so happy to be working their and it was apparent to be a well coordinated restaurant.
Thank you to the staff of State Bird provision and we did get a table that night
Always a favorite. The subtlety and balance of flavor and texture is exquisite.
Wonderful food and service.
I had previously dined at their adjacent sister restaurant, The Progress, and after being blown away by the food, drinks, and ambiance I was ready for more of the same. The space is pretty small, they only serve beer & wine, and the menu is... interesting BUT everything changed when we got the rundown from one of our rotating servers. Their 16 dish tapas selection was amazing! They wheeled around and offered a delicious selection of dishes that were perfect for sharing. It was a delicious, fun, and memorable dining experience unlike any other.
Amazing food, great vibes and friendly service. Bonus = got to sit next to James Franco! :)
EXCEPTIONAL and AMAZING are the only words that come to mind - the food was spot on, the service was attentive and even though we were the last reservation of the night, they did not rush us at all to order, said anything about kitchen closing, etc. They just served the food and the waitress really did a great job of making recommendations. Great experience.
Food was really good...but just not that absolute WOW that I remember from the last several times I’d been, most recently a little over a year ago....worries me because I’d heard almost the same review from a friend of mine a few months ago. Just sayin...
In a city full of fine dining destinations State Bird continues to stand out as a unique and exciting culinary experience.
