Overall, it was just OK. But for the price point and the Michelin star, we were very underwhelmed. While the food was good, it did not come across as a "worth a stop" 1 Michelin star restaurant. I would likely not return on my own dime. Service was good, but perhaps a bit disengaged. With the on-going pandemic, understaffed restaurants, etc., I can understand the stress the staff is probably under so I wasn't too concerned about it.

We've been to State Bird Provisions a couple times in the past and LOVED it. The food was amazing and the service was exceptional. This time we did not have a great experience. The food selections were not as broad or varied as previous visits (we are vegan), the music and noise level was such that we couldn't hear each other, and while a few of the dishes were indeed excellent (persimmons and brussel sprouts), some of the dishes were just okay. I planned a month in advance to get the reservations and hyped it up to my family. I was disappointed it didn't match my hype. We likely won't come back for a while until the dim sum style of serving returns and they have more vegan options.

After hearing about this restaurant for years, I had high expectations. Compared to other restaurants I've been to at this price, it very much underperformed. Food felt more experimental than tasty, dishes were over seasoned and over salted, and some of the food tasted like simple dishes I could make at home. For the price, I would not recommend.

Overall it was an okay experience. Had a reservation and seated immediately. Our drink order was taken promptly but then we waited about 25 mins until we could place our food order. Watched everyone around us get seated after us and place their food orders and had their food arrive. Once we placed our order the food arrived quickly. I just expected higher quality service for a Michelin star restaurant. A little disappointed.

Best addressed with an adventuresome spirit as food, flavor combinations range from uncommon to exotic. Many were unfamiliar but staff were exceptional with willing and helpful explanations and recommendations. We were delighted with both starters, oysters and persimmons. The duck dumplings and trout special were also superb. Steak was perfectly prepared and presented but sauce overwhelmed meat flavor. Ice cream sandwich and mochi cake made for a great finish. Staff was wonderful about moving us outside after inside noise impeded our conversation. Altogether a fun and delicious experience worthy of a special occasion.

Truly inventive food you won’t find anywhere else. And you certainly won’t be making these dishes at home. Warm friendly hosts. Amazing servers who do a great job of helping you navigate the menu and make good choices.

Statebird Provisions was fine- not stunning, not bad. A party of two spent around $275, including a cheaper bottle of wine and enough food to finish everything, but be hungry about 30 min later. Some of the portions were very small, but the big disappointment for me was the mark-up on the wine list. There were some true gems on the reserve list, but the regular list was full of bottles that go for $10-$20 at retail price marked up to $75 or $100. I work in the wine industry, and while a markup of 2.5 times (or 3x for SF) is fairly standard, nobody should be paying $70 to drink an $11 bottle of Torre Oria.

My friend that recommended the restaurant thought that maybe the giant difference in our experiences was due to which produce were in season- so I would recommend going in the summer or spring- just skip the wine.

I’ve dined at state bird provisions for four times now, including the brunch pop-up, and have really loved everything I’ve had. Until this last visit. Disappointed with every dish except for the steak. I’m now hesitant whether to come back anymore :(

Went for a friends bday. The food here is so creative but at the same time it works. I’ve been to so many restaurants where they try to be avant garde with their dishes and you end up with a soul-less stacking of ingredients that aren’t cohesive. SBP has managed to absolutely nail creativity in dishes that make sense.

I have eaten at this restaurant about half a dozen times. They never disappoint. I brought friends with whom I had eaten at the hot, new restaurant around the corner just the night before. It was fabulous, but State Bird, tried-and-true, was better.

I love the variety of offerings and the availability of small plates. This allows the table to try more great dishes for a reasonable amount of money. It also allows the diner the ability to append the order with more dishes as the night goes on - much like at a sushi restaurant.

I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

A shadow of it’s former self. Have been here many times pre-pandemic and always loved it. Now, the carts delivering food to your table are gone. The menu is roughly 1/3 what it used to be. Basically turned it into a version of Progress, the sister restaurant next door, but with food quality dropped quite a bit. Very sad as this was one of my very favorite restaurants. Wont’ be back.

Almost everything we ordered (9 dishes) sounded better on the menu than it actually tasted. In general, their dishes were too acidic and lacked balance. The fuyu persimmon was too acidic and the persimmons weren’t ripe enough and skewed more towards unripe cantaloupe in flavor profile. The potato chips in the trout roe and horseradish dip dish were a bit soggy. The dip even had too much acid and not enough horseradish. We had a tofu skin roll that was also too acidic and could have used some crunch or something more savory. Instead it was slimy. The star of the show was the confit duck dumplings. They were amazing and if it weren’t for them, this would have been less than a three star review. For a restaurant whose namesake hangs on quail, the quail was just ok. The sourdough and sauerkraut pancake was more cheesy than anything else. The second best item we had was the pumpkin ice cream sandwich. It was heavenly. Ambience was busy and uncomfortable. The service was somewhat slow and inattentive. Overall, I expected so much more than we experienced for a restaurant with a Michelin star and so much hype. At least the bill wasn’t exorbitant, but the experience left our party of four unanimously saying “meh.”
