The food is exquisite, everything was prepared perfectly. The staff was friendly, made helpful recommendations, and provided excellent service. This is one of my favorite places to dine when visiting SF.
I really enjoyed the place. Service was spot on and informative and their duck liver mousse was heavenly.
This place is amazing in both taste and creativity - we love it and try to make this very hard to make reservation every time we are in SF . It’s amazing how the atmosphere and the crew match incredible taste and presentation of the dishes that’s always exceed the taste buds expectations
Went for my husbands birthday. We’re given a booth - very cozy and socially distanced. Food overall was very good - we ordered too much and took a lot home but enjoyed it.
It definitely lived up to its expectations. The food and the service was awesome and it is a nice friendly atmosphere.
State Bird never disappoints! Amazing food, incrediblyy kind and knowledgable service, and an unforgettable dining experience. With covid, we missed the dim-sum style cart service, but they adjusted flawlessly and we were still able to enjoy the experience. My party had someone with a nut allergy and a vegetarian, and they were very accomodating about making necessary changes for us. My favorite restaurant in San Francisco.
This was our first visit to State Bird. Outside seating was very comfortable and not too noisy despite being on a busy street. Service was excellent. Dishes are beautifully presented and very tasty. I advise focusing on many smaller dishes as they are all unique and very tasty. The Mandarin Pavlova may well have been the best dessert of my life. Not cheap but a good value for your money.
We went for an anniversary meal and everything was lovely!
Fabulous food, excellent atmosphere. Knowledgeable and friendly staff makes for a unique and highly memorable dining experience.
No carts yet because of COVID . Always my favorite !
Each dish we ordered was flavorfully delicious! It was my daughter’s 34th birthday and they brought a dessert with a sparkler on the house. We ate outside and the street was lively.
State Bird Provision is up the street from our condo. We have been here when it first open and throughout the years. Still very difficult to get a reservation last minute when friends visit, but we always enjoy a meal at this place. The staff are courteous and the dishes are flavorful. I miss the old days when they bring a tray around like the dim sum hall in Asia.
Unfortunately didn’t live up to the hype. Must have been different pre covid. I’ve been waiting for a long time to go there but everything was just kind of mhew. Not bad but not very good either.
My husband and I chose this restaurant after reading an article about the recent reopening of the place. It seemed like an ideal place to celebrate our promotions that we both got recently.
Overall, the experience was very disappointing.
1. We made a reservation with the outdoor sitting but got a table inside, next to the restroom.
2. The first waitress who greeted us and walked us through the menu was very condescending. Any question we asked (how many dishes should we order for the two of us, for example) was met with a really bad attitude, to the point of being snappy when I politely asked if I could have a drink that I ordered 15 min earlier. Not sure if that was because we both speak with an accent or she just had a bad day. We both felt uncomfortable and unwelcome. Luckily, she disappeared after a while and the rest of the staff was super friendly.
3. Two dishes were amazing! Squid salad and pancakes. What a flavor and texture! No words!!! But the rest of the food was just ok. Oxtail made my husband very very sick. He’s still recovering.
The food is amazing, unique, and an experience you should have.
Service was great and food was outstanding - definitely lived up to expectations
Superb food and better service. My favorite restaurant in SF
Service was outstanding! High touch and very friendly... The hostess worked with us to accommodate our needs. Food was high quality and pretty... could be maybe a little bit more flavorful... but overall solid. The pork belly, oxtails with fried tofu, and duck confit dumplings stood out. The carrot mochi and beef tongue buckwheat pancakes were good but not stunners... The outdoor patio area is stunning and the discreet gold quails and other state bird art was lovely. Beyond those touches, the indoor dining environment was a little plain ... pegboard ceilings and plain concrete walls... sort of an industrial chic, but I was hoping for more textures / high quality or innovative materials... and the inside is a bit cramped, though not bad for SF... the food costs were reasonable and so overall value seems excellent!
The food was as good as I remember it to the be the last time I was here. This is hands-down my favorite restaurant in SF.
With one of the most beautiful parklet setups in SF, it's a treat to dine outdoors at State Bird. The individual heat lamps warm up each table well. Service and food was spot on, as before covid. Will definitely return!
every time i am visiting from ny i try to get a table while in town
amazing every time, this time we met Adam and he was absolutely wonderful and we were able to taste alot of amazing wines while eating. ty!!!
Loved the duck potstickers and the trout spread. Desserts were just so-so.
Excellent all around- can’t wait to come back!
Since having Covid restrictions in place, State Bird has constructed a nicely decorated shelter for outdoor dining. We chose to sit outside rather than inside even though the weather was on the cooler side. They set up portable propane heaters for each table and our table had plexiglass walls. We were pleasantly warm throughout the meal. We (even our hard to please 8 year old) all loved the duck confit dumplings and our other favorites included the oxtails, shrimp toast, oysters kohlrabi and of course the quail. A number of staff helped with the service and they were all very pleasant and personable. We never felt rushed and when we wanted to add on courses, they came out surprisingly fast. We were celebrating my wife’s birthday and we all walked away feeling like the dinner was a success.
Literally my favorite restaurant in SF. They have done an amazing job with the outdoor area, very cozy with heaters and plants so you don’t feel like you are on a busy sidewalk. We sat indoors this time. Service, food and wine list was amazing as always. Only difference was they did not have the food cart. But we still managed to pig out and share 3 deserts (there were 4 of us). I absolutely recommend this place if you have food FOMO. All the small plates mean you get to try everything! Heaven!
The food and service was magnificent. I’m definitely coming back every time I can get a reservation
It was amazing. We had such a lovely time with out of town guests. Great experience end to end.
The appetizers were good but the entree was a miss. The state bird provision was almost okay. The quail was moist, but lacked flavour. The provision was just sautéed onions as the base of the quail. The other quail entree: April cover bird (blacked quail) was horrible. The spices were too strong and it left an unpleasant spicy aftertaste. It was not hot but very spicy which left a bitter/minty aftertaste. The hoisin sauce did not help enrich the flavour, the spiciness outshined the hoisin. I tasted mint and tarragon on the blackened quail. The quail was very moist though. The last entree was the red trout, it had a nice crispy skin but the meat was very fishy, one could tell that it was not fresh. The portion was about the size of 2 matchboxes and it was $34! I enjoyed the dressing that went with the fish. We also had oysters and the fish dip chips. Those were divine.
If you ever go to this place, just go for the appetizers. Personally, I won't go back to this restaurant. I wont pay that much for such a mediocre meal.
We were seated outside which led to some not ideal situations.
Loved it!! My favorite restaurant in SF!!
Amazing food, top 3 favorite restaurants in the city!
We have been waiting for SBP and The Progress to open post COVID for my birthday dinner. I actually like the atmosphere best at Progress but we love the food at both. We were sad that the dim sum style service was not active but the food was outstanding. We will go to The Progress when it opens up again.
Espectacular !!! Todo es excelente !! Una atención maravillosa sigo enamorada de lo que comí !!
Excellent experience for our party. The staff handled all of the complications of Covid protections with efficiency and grace so our dining experience was as good as previous experience here in the “Before Times”. So glad State Bird has survived.
Cant wait to go back for the next special occasion!
Phemomenal place. 10/10, would eat there again. Don't eat lunch because you will get a good amount of quail for dinner here!
Unique food! Can't wait for things to go back to normal!
Dinner was good, service was top notch and friendly.
Sezchuan-crusted quail was more tongue-numbing than I expected, but then, it WAS sezchuan-crusted...
