Stark is located in East Mersea, Essex and is owned and run by Ben and Sophie Crittenden, who opened their first site in Broadstairs back in December 2016 with the aim of securing a better work/life balance and enabling Ben to enjoy more time with their three young children, Ivy, Rosa and Arlo. Before relocating to Mersea Island, Stark was the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Thanet and one of five in the whole of Kent.

At Stark, only one, set tasting menu is served with no options or alternatives available. Because of this, Stark is unable to cater for any allergies or dietary requirements, for any reason as all guests eat the exact same meal each night. Ben creates a menu from high quality, seasonal ingredients, using his creativity and passion to create delicious food and provide a unique and exciting eating experience for customers.

Stark is a very intimate, relaxed restaurant, whose only demand of you is that you sit back, trust us with your dinner and enjoy the experience.

A set menu of the chef's choosing. All guests eat the same menu each night and, because of this, we are unable to cater for any allergies or dietary requirements. An accompanying wine flight is available and needs to be pre-ordered at the time of booking. A pre-payment of £50 is required to secure the booking and this will be deducted from the bill on the day of the reservation.

Only a Taster Menu is on offer with no choices or substitutions but we knew that when we booked. These are Michelin prices but we’ll worth it for a special occasion. Every course was well thought out and beautifully presented with clever flavour and texture combinations . It was a joy to sample each offering. No criticism only praise for all the dishes. It was busy but we were impressed that the courses turned up without delay but without rushing us. Front of house explained the ingredients in the dishes and were knowledgeable when we asked questions . All in all it was a delightful experience and we will be back ( when we’ve saved up!) . What a gem of a restaurant. Lovely food combined with a warm and efficient service. A cosy and informal venue in the countryside of East Mersea. A fantastic 7 course tasting menu - Love the idea of no choices - Just surprise me! Great presentation (loved the Scandinavian pebble crockery), a wonderful range of flavours and courses. We left happy and full.

East Mersea is a special place and Stark makes it even more so. Understated from the outside, beautiful inside. If you are good about something you do not need to self promote, you just show it with your work, in this case carefully curated tasting menu and a great selection of wines in a relaxing environment.

Outstanding on every level. Creative, balanced, delicious plates of wonderful flavoursome food. A big shout out to this dedicated hard working young couple, STARK is a culinary experience not to be missed.

A great surprise! my wife and I had been recommended by a friend and booked as a surprise for my wife's birthday. WOW, we both enjoyed the tasting menu equally. The service and the 2.5 hours indulgence and experience was Fabulous! A Real Treat! Thank you

Wow what an amazing meal. The quality and flavours of the food were superb. The service from Sophie and Ella was excellent. Didn’t do the wine pairings but had a nice bottle of white from the menu. We went during the latest heatwave and the lack of air conditioning was a bit of a problem.

Fabulous meal nice small restaurant with great service and food to remember. Tasting menu so portions small but delicious and smoked mascarpone ice cream with blackcurrants stunning as was cod pickled fennel asparagus etc
