Excellent food and service but the menu needs to be more detailed and descriptive. I assume this is done to spark conversation with the server but not everyone wants to talk to their server. It also makes one feel ignorant or embarrassed that items can’t be pronounced or we don’t know what it is.
Great food. Very noisy. Service was excellent. We’d consider it again but are out off by the noise level.
We had dinner prior to the show at the Belfy. The food was small plates, but the flavors were huge! We were 2 and ordered 3 dishes and a dessert. Cocktails were tasty, and we had a great bottle of wine. A great meal and I would go again.
Under new ownership, so of course their is change. We enjoyed very much the food we did have. We were looking forward to having a cheese plate, but this is no longer part of the menu, so it was disappointing. We would have liked a couple of more options for Vegetables. Overall though we enjoyed our experience and will go again, and our servers were outstanding.
Seemed a bit pricey for a ‘shared plates/small portions’ menu but very tasty - great atmosphere and great service. Thanks!
Plus side: Interesting mixed drinks and a good selection of wines. Someone with imagination has crafted the menu. Negative side: For the price, we did feel that the small plates were very small--nice size for pre-theatre snack, but at the price (e.g. duck at $20) we had expected more than just a slice each.
Would recommend for atmosphere and good service. Just be aware of how quickly all those little tastes add up!
Sadly the menu has changed and none of us were impressed by the choices. Used to be a favorite of ours, we won’t be returning soon. The food we ate was fine, but tiny portions for the price.
I'm sorry to hear that you had such a bad time in our establishment. We have intentionally under valued our menu to help people adjust to the new seasonal menu. We have continued with stage's long history of small plates service and currently have no items over $20. To be honest most of our food items are under the price points of the old menu. But it is sad to hear that we are not to your liking.
My husband and I went on our usual date night to Stage which was one of our favourites.
It was with great disappointment that we found out it had new owners, new menus and a expensive wine list. We won’t be back sadly.
You are correct, the wine prices have been increased . We have a new philosophy of bringing in small producers that produce wine made with sustainable practices not in factories which sadly creates higher prices. However, we do feel that the nuances found in these unique wines is worth the price and our list is on par with if not under our competitors. With that all said we are also offering a late night wine that is made by a co-op in a small village in Italy and it is very well priced at $8
Came here with 3 other friends, for a rare night out...service, food & ambience were outstanding. We arrived at 8 pm and left after 11 pm because we were enjoying ourselves so much
The new menu was very good and we are always especially pleased the restaurant can accommodate celiac requirements. That completely dictates our choice in dining out. The only disappointment we found was the elimination of the mixed cheese, meat and bread platter. It was my go-to at Stage prior to the change in ownership.
The food was amazing and the restaurant very nice. The drinks were on point and the service really good. The plate were a bit small but the food was very tasty. I would definitely recommend trying this place.
We went to Victoria for a few days on vacation, and while chatting with a local, she recommended we get out of the touristy downtown area and have dinner at Stage. It is in an adorable little neighborhood. We sat at the bar, and had so much fun chatting with the bartender and staff that we never moved to our table. We shared a few plates, had wonderful wine, learned about some new wines, and generally had a fantastic evening. All the dishes were super fresh, well thought-out and unique in their combinations and seasonings. The gravlax and "staff meal" special were our favorites.
I have not been to Stage for a few months and the menu seems to have changed. It was hard to find something to my liking whereas previously it was hard to choose from many things that appealed. The larger dishes are mostly meat, specifically more pork and beef than I remember in the past. The one fish dish which I had was uninteresting.
Love Stage. Always a fantastic experience. A little disappointed in the new menu. Food was good, but definitely preferred original menu.
We were a party of six. I cannot comment on the food as we walked out before ordering.
We arrived early, and although we were the only customers at first, the noise level was very high. The music was so loud we couldn’t hear our own conversation. They also had a fan blowing so hard, the menus were blowing away and it was cold.
I think the ownership has changed. The menu was completely different from our previous dinning there, (which we loved) and there was nothing on it that appealed to us.
Great service, location, ambience, drink menu. Food was good- I was expecting more, but a few of the dishes fell flat. Maybe we ordered the wrong items, but I was expecting to be blown away from all the positive reviews I had heard.
It’s been a few years since I’ve been to Stage. I brought 5 friends with me. The food was creative and delicious, most made for sharing. The old brick wall is beautiful inside and is a nice ambiance. The noise level was high as it was full of customers which is great but their are nothing to absorb the sounds. I would return for the wonderful food.
New Chef, new menu! Service as always was spot on! Although the food chosen was delicious, I was a touch let down by the offerings. On a personal level, I simply didn’t feel like it was as vibrant and intriguing as the last menu we enjoyed. It felt like more of a winter compilation than summer. But I’m also not a chef and what do I know. Will be back again once the seasonal change is in effect!
I love this place
The new menu is limited, niche, and very meat forward. Too bad, this used to be our ultimate favourite place to dine but we'll be going elsewhere next time. Service is superb as always.
Absolutely in love with the new menu! Everything we ate was delicious and we’ll seasoned. The service was fabulous. All the staff were knowledgeable about the new food and made some great recommendations. They even made me a yummy mock tail so the pregnant girl didn’t feel left out. ;) thanks again! We will be back soon.
Fabulous in everything! Food is on point using various ingredients. The restaurant focuses on using local produce and unfortunately mussels from salt spring island aren’t doing good the day of visit so the dish isn’t offered. Otherwise from past delicious experience I’d highly recommend it. Service is excellent with servers knowing most of the dishes inside out. Restaurant noise level got slightly rowdy on a Tuesday around 7pm. Guessing it’s because of customers’ alcohol consumption. I’d be back again for the food and service for its friends and family.
Best food we have had in 2019. Great experience, great staff. This was our first ever visit to Victoria, but we will certainly return to Stage on every visit.
Great playlist, very friendly & caring staff, and delicious food & drinks! Overall a fantastic night out.
Our server was lovely, and the new owner extended a very classy gesture, so I really really wanted to love it....but....the food was so unexciting. Not horrible, just...meh. Under seasoned. Blah. We had 5 dishes in total, and while most of them had some merits, not one of them was memorable. Ambience and noise level were the same as they’ve always been. Service was perfect. I think maybe the owners just need to introduce their chef to Mr.Salt and Mrs. Pepper!
We discovered Stage five years ago and it became a go-to if we're on the island. It never disappoints. New owners very recently and glad to see the excellent standards look to be maintained. Thanks to Ryan for looking after us so well, and to Peter too.
If you haven't been to the Fernwood area of Victoria, going for a nice glass of wine and sharing some of their awesome dishes is a good reason to make the trip. This is such a cool area of town to take a visitor or for a date night, and making it at Stage for some food and drinks is a must if you are there. The atmosphere makes you feel you are in Europe. There are not many 'wine bars' in Victoria so this is a great find. You can order a really decent wine by the glass as they have several selections of red and white that are a cut above most other restaurants when ordering by the glass. Also, the food is excellent. Mostly tapas for sharing so you get to pick a few even if it is just two of you. I had not been here for over a year and just going back recently made me realize that I should not wait so long for a return visit.
Stage is now in my number one spot to go to in Victoria. My experience there was absolutely amazed. The staff was knowledge, experienced and fantastic. Shout out to Ryan our server. To any wondering where to go, just go here. Oh yeah the food and wine was exceptional.
If anyone has read my previous reviews of stage, they will know it is one of my favorite restaurants in Victoria (and I make a point of going every time I’m in town)
This past Saturday, I arrived at stage to discover a completely different menu. While my initial reaction was disappointment ( as I loved the Asian infusion styled menu) I was also intrigued as the new menu was completely different - Stage is now a French bistro and the menu included such classics as bone marrow, tartar, bavette, pork belly etc.
When I questioned our server about the dramatic change, she explained that the owner of stage had two restaurants (stage and the Levit - where I ate the following night - review to follow) and that with a young family, he had decided to sell Stage to a friend and keep The Levit along with Stage chef, Derick Leung. So Stage now had a new chef Ivan Litland, a Norwegian trained in French style cuisine.
Here were some initial impressions:
1. French cuisine doesn’t lend itself as well to Stage’s tapas approach
2. Deciding on shared plates was more challenging as items like tartar, pork belly, pigs head, and Terrine, are not universally appealing
3. Geens and veg - personal bias here but the French salad of mixed greens is well ...boring , and frankly I’m kaled our these days so there wasn’t much that was appealing in terms of lighter side dishes to accompany the meat dishes.
However...we had a great meal! the bavette was delicious, perfectly cooked. The poached chicken with Dianne like fresh mushroom sauce which perfectly complimented the meat was the favorite dish of the evening and the cheese plate was to die for - especially the Brie which was unlike any I had ever tasted.
Overall the new “Stage” is a must try. My sense is, it will just keep getting better as the Ivan “finds his legs” and further develops his culinary vision for the restaurant. On my next visit I will be having the seafood and fish dishes.
Don’t bother coming here if you are a vegetarian. The options are paltry.
I’m conflicted. I still like Stage and would recommend to a friend for a pre-Belfry drink - however the food was underwhelming. The price is high for what you get, and the selection is meh. Honestly I miss the old menu. Especially the cauliflower. New menu left me cold. Wine, sure. Food ... not so much.
I used to love Stage but their new menu is unimpressive. It is ok, but not at the level it was before.
Love Stage - inviting, warm, and delicious. It's like having dinner at at good friends, who happens to be a spectacular chef. We were a group of 8 and ordered one of everything on the menu, and two of a few. Every. Single. Dish. was cooked perfectly, presented beautifully and tasted divine. Menu is seasonal, fresh and mouthwatering. Thrilled with our first meal with the new head chef! Would love to see those Langos bites back on the menu though... :).
Was disappointed that the online menu is not what the actual menu is. The actual menu will only be a few of the items from the online menu. So in that aspect we were disappointed as we were planning on making this our dinner stop with a selection of several different tapas for our meal, only to find that only really had two entrees and rest was veggies....not enough selection, so we just had appetizers then off to another restaurant for our main course.
Reserved at 6PM, got there at 5:45, restaurant was not open at the time and had zero signs of being open (can look through windows and see that there's no one there and the chairs were still in storage on top of the tables).
Hello, We did try to call you several times and did leave a message. Sorry for the miscommunication.
After making a reservation I arrived at the restaurant to find it closed for the evening. I will return as I have enjoyed this restaurant on several occasions, but it was a disappointment and inconvenience to have to make last minute changes especially since I had a ferry to catch
There is a reason that Stage was restaurant of the year, quality, service, and of course the food!
The staff make your visit memorable as well as attentive and knowledgeable. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who hasn’t try them yet!
Outstanding taste sensations, prepared and served with love by lovely people. Price is up there. I go to Stage when I want a special treat for my senses, and to treat my sweety to a special experience.
Awesome food flavours and quality; good drinks. A little noisy for our party of 4.
Always our favourite place to dine before theatre. So lucky to have this gem so close.
