St. Anselm - DC
The vibe is a warm steakhouse with lots of dark woods and taxidermy on the walls, but also american. The service was great, our waitress provided lots of great recommendations including our favorite appetizer the grilled oysters and our favorite main entree the skirt steak. The bar is also excellent, they make some great drinks and the bartenders are fun to talk to.
The food was wonderful - nice quantity and well presented- definitely would go back
Overall it was good. The grilled oysters and biscuits with pimento Icheese were excellent. The lamb tartare was very good. The problem was where we were sitting cold air was constantly blowing on us. Several people were seated next to us and immediately requested another table. He said something to the waitress and then the manager and they said they were going to work on it. Several other tables sat down and immediately requested a new table. The ribeye was OK but not what I expected. It could’ve been that it was so cold nothing was enjoyable
The food and service was amazing. We really enjoyed our Birthday Dinner there. The prices are most definitely not compatible with what the portion of food they serve. Specifically the steak, it tasted delicious but the price was way to high for the little pieces they served us.
The food was good but pricey, especially because the entrees and sides are a la carte. The appetizer portions were also on the smaller side, also given their prices.
Great experience all around.
Best biscuits I ever ate in my life!
We experienced the brunch menu. The service, food, and atmosphere was excellent. We will definitely be back for more!
The manager was doing to much... actually became intrusive and rude in the process
Really like this place. Great steak and appetizers were excellent. Sommelier was also extremely helpful. Definitely on our A-list.
Great atmosphere and amazing dining. Sat at the bar to try one of their signature drinks! Asked the bartender for a recommendation based on my taste and she was spot on. And as my business partner said, “they take simple and making it amazing”. We had the steak, biscuits, the wedge salad and sides. We couldn’t figure out our wine and the sommelier immediately popped up and figured out what we needed. No fuss, attentive and great ambience. Perfect with friends, casual business gathering and special occasions.
The most amazing restaurant experience myself and my family have ever had. You walk into this interesting cave like hunting lodge atmosphere and it’s so unique... the deviled eggs are to die for and the entrees OMG. everything is cooked to perfection. Chef Marjorie is truly one of the most amazing chefs this country has to offer and if you don’t visit this restaurant while in the area then you seriously are missing out on one of the best meals of your life. I couldn’t have asked for anything better, the best restaurant I’ve ever been to. Period. Must visit.
Overall each dish we ordered lacked seasoning or any creativity. It is very much overrated for the price point. I would not go back.
Food and staff were fantastic!
Great cocktails, fun decor, amazing service and the food was fantastic.
One of my absolute favorite places in DC. The pimento cheese and biscuits are to die for!!!
We arrived early and sat at the bar and got prompt service. We had steaks and a bottle of wine. Server was friendly and knowledgable about the wine. Get the ribeye. Pretty amazing
Fabulous place for the foo, the wine and the ambiance.
We keep returning to this near perfect spot! Nothing is better than when it all counts - food, service, knowledge, sourcing, passion and care. The team is savvy and so dedicated. And really -- nothing comes close to a cozy bar hang and dine at SA! As for larger groups -- we loved sharing our way through the menu. Make room for the sides and always order the biscuits. Consider SA a top choice for special occasions. Much more down to earth than any other Starr property - this is the perfect place to fete with family and friends!
Food is delicious.
I dream about their delicious biscuits. The gin cocktail is perfection. I've never had a bad meal here. The service is always top notch and the overall vibe is friendly and cool. It's become our favorite for brunch. We'll keep coming back!
Came for brunch, which was a little disappointing after having visited a few months earlier for what I would describe as an excellent dinner. I love the ambiance and decor here, and our waitress was fantastic and attentive. However, the food was a bit underwhelming (although reasonably priced). I was so sad about the monkey bread -- I was looking forward to ordering it but when it came it was kind of stale and cold and seemed like a really missed opportunity to offer what should be a delicious but simple pastry. Otherwise it was fine but I expected it to be better and was somewhat disappointed.
Loved the food and ambiance, also great service. Contemplating not returning because of the noise levels. I’m in my 40s but impossible to carry on a conversation.
Came based on a recommendation from a family member for our anniversary. We are brunch people and the brunch was super good! I appreciated the extra, complimentary glasses of sparkling in celebration of our anniversary. We will definitely come back.
Despite the current popularity of this place, our reservation was honored promptly , we were made to feel welcome and service was great— friendly and efficient.! Food was outstanding. A wonderful experience!
Second time visiting - it was amazing! The axe handle steak and wedge salad are the best in DC.
We went to St. Anselms for our anniversary. We were seated in a cute side booth, just what you’d like for a special occasion.
The steaks were great, my New York strip was perfectly done and seasoned. We got the mashed potatoes and spinach as sides; the spinach was too salty for my taste. The biscuits and pimiento cheese were outstanding.
One frustrating part of the evening was that I felt rushed. The food came out so quickly we hardly had time to talk. Our server was attentive to the point of my feeling that he was trying to turn the table over as quickly as possible. When you are still in the middle of eating dessert and having wine and he drops off the check and says, ‘no hurry,’ you feel hurried. The meal was a splurge for us, and I would have had a better time if we’d been able to dine at a more leisurely pace, especially since we had an early reservation (5:45) on a weeknight.
I would definitely recommend St. Anselms, but if you are looking for a relaxed pace, maybe tell the server up front.
Pricing and content a bit greedy.
We went to St Anselm on a date - and had a wonderful time! The service is fantastic and the food is delicious. The restaurant is a bit noisy - and because we were seated at a table vs. a booth the experience lacked privacy. Great place - would definitely go back!!
This restaurant was a wonderful combination of delicious food, exciting atmosphere, and terrific service.
Great venue, excellent food and service
Waiters are almost too friendly/familiar. We were surprised at the noise level, which was less than expected based on the reviews. Perhaps this was because we were there on a Sunday evening. Overall, excellent and we recommend it.
Well... Everything was great until we got home and both got sick..
My wife and I really love this place. It was our second time going since July 24th and we will be back many many times.
Small portions for the price. The steak portion of the steak and eggs has shrunk. Service was friendly.
Go in with low expectations and you'll be just fine. Beautiful restaurant in a great new thriving part of town. Staff is accommodating and you can't blame them for menu items, restaurant policies, etc.
I'm a big fan of Marjorie and they promote her enough in their advertising, so of course the food will taste good. She's gonna make sure of it. My choices for dinner were not the "most expensive" on the menu and I worry they were not given quite the attention of other items. If I go back, I will definitely be looking at spending more money on my entree to see if my thought is correct.
When ordering an alcoholic drink, remember to ask about the up charge for ICE. It's not the first time I've encountered that at a DC restaurant. Very odd, not sure I'd be making my $50 per person dinner guest upset about a $2 up charge. And the mere fact that they don't tell you about it up front says to me they aren't all that excited about the policy. Do us all a favor and include the ice in the menu price for the drink and your lunch/dinner guests won't be questioning their bill at the end of a meal or visit to the bar.
Overall, I might go back one day. Not sure I'd put my reputation on the line by suggesting it to others (yet). Good luck and GO Marjorie!!
All fabulous -food - service -etc Gregg mgr/wine big Help - all good ! Hostess did try to seat us at very bad table for door - as soon as you come in - very bad !!
we did complain and did get a nicer/quieter table - all ends well
Great decor, friendly staff, delicious food. More vegetarian main dish options would be great although I realize it is ultimately a steak house. St Anselm is a favorite neighborhood restaurant and I take family and friends often. The decor is warm and inviting.
