Contemporary American
Located in the Union Market neighborhood, the second outpost of Joe Carroll’s popular NYC restaurant aims to bring some of the laid back vibes of Brooklyn to Washington, DC. St. Anselm is an American tavern devoted to the pleasures of grilled meats and great ingredients simply cooked. While steak is a specialty, the creativity of Chef Marjorie Meek-Bradley doesn’t stop there. Delicious food, eclectic wines (some on tap), and classic cocktails set the tone for a great experience. Paired with friendly service in an unpretentious setting adorned with quirky décor, dining at St Anselm is the total package.

The food was good though not enough to justify the price. We ordered a steak and our server didn’t even ask us what temperature we wanted it. The ambiance is also funny in that it feels like a mix between a Cracker Barrel and a TGI Friday’s. Servers in T-shirt’s also don’t go too well with $30+ entrees. Probably won’t go back.

Terrific dinner! The location is a little difficult as we were driving in from the suburbs. But parking wasn't bad. Service was friendly and helpful. Oysters, jumbo shrimp and steaks were great. We will make a point of coming back if we are in the area again.

St Anselms was AMAZING! My husband and I went for his birthday dinner this past week on a Wednesday. The restaurant was busy and full but not too packed. We had a reservation and when we arrived we popped over to the bar for a drink. We were served instantly and my cocktail was delicious (it was a gin something or other) and my husband got a draft beer.
We purchased a gift card for a friend when we arrived and the manager came out immediately to help us and even talked us though other Starr restaurants we might want to try.
Our server was super knowledgeable about not only the food, but the wines that the restaurant offered as well. The wine we wanted was sold out and we sampled two that she suggested as similar. She gave us great recommendations and the food was de-lish. HIGHLY recommend the biscuits. We got a great asparagus dish and grilled broccoli, too. I forget the cut of steak my husband got and I got the rockfish with a saffron mussel sauce. The saffron mussel sauce was out of this world. We also had a piece of carrot cake for dessert and it was DIVINE.
I am a pescatarian (while my husband is a meat-eater) so going to a place that's famous for it's steaks is always a little risky for me. This place had so many options for me to try! I will definitely be going back. It feels classy and swanky but the food is elevated beyond a "basic" steak house.

Food was great. It was not complex, but bursting with flavor. Ask for butter and honey instead of pimento cheese spread with the hot biscuits. The whipped butter melts as soon as it touches the biscuit and the honey brings it all together. Warning, don’t fill up on the biscuits since there are many goodies still to come.

Overpriced food that is not worth the price paid. Waited a longtime (45 minutes) for food to be served and was disappointed on the whole experience. The fries were overcooked and taste dry and stale. The stake was no better than a typical chain establishment. Aside from the $48 dollar 16 oz stake, all the portions were small and overcooked and boring. Absolutely nothing special about the food and could see that there was no pride or quality for the amount of money charged. Save your money and go to 5-guys, and if you must go to St. Anselm - then be prepared to go to 5-guys afterward as you will leave hungry and disappointed.

Restaurant service and food were great. However when I commented the music level was too loud, the server commented that that was corporate policy. So management doesn't care what diners want? Neighborhood was so-so, lot of dilapidated buildings, would look better with building renovations and more upscale-shops.

Biscuits and pimento spread were great but the chicken having head and claws was unnecessary. And the pork chop was just not good. Service was solid though.

We really enjoyed our dinner here - were most impressed by the very supportive wait team - they seemed to back each other up and worked so smoothly together to meet all our needs without being intrusive. The food we had (chicken, rockfish, carrots, broccoli) was delicious, generous in size and well plated. We also had the buttermilk biscuits with pimento cheese which were to die for. Good wine list. Generous pour for gin and tonic. Casual and friendly. Our only complaint was the noise. Could have eaten outside to avoid that but would then miss the ambience! Looking forward to another visit.

Everything was so amazing. The ambiance, food, drinks, service, etc. I’m from Miami and I would literally fly back to come to St Anselm and get their biscuits! The cucumber salad was amazing. The butchers steak was delicious. Wish I had room for dessert because they also looked yummy 😋 10/10 rating

Overall merits a return visit and very strong recommendation. Server was very helpful, knowledgable, accommodating and peasant. Everything was delicious but the spinach was barely room temperature when it arrived, suggesting it had sat on a service table for too long. It was taken off the bill, even tho we did not ask for same. The service could have been a bit quicker, esp at the end. We had a booth so the noise was not an issue, tho it might have been at a different table.

We chose this for a special occasion and so glad we did. This was one of the best meals we've had in DC. The two apps (crudo and broiled oysters) were delicious. And both mains (butcher steak and lamb) were also fantastic. Our server couldn't have been more charming -- willing to let us enjoy our drinks without pushing us to order quickly, and yet available when we needed her. And the room and setting are great. We will definitely return often.

In the past, I've given rave reviews for St. Anslem. Something about my last dining experience was off. Overall the food didn't have the same flavor. The crab legs are usually a great combination of butter and garlic. I had to ask for extra sauce for my pork chop because the flavor was lacking. Lastly, my crispy potatoes were very soft on the inside. Everyone has an off night and hopefully that won't happen again.

I think our biggest issue with the meal was the pacing. When we ordered 9 dishes, they all came out at more or less the same time, leaving us struggling to find room on the table and to eat it while still warm.

In her defense, this may have been a miscommunication with our waiter--she asked how we'd like it to come out, and we said something to the effect of "As it comes," intending that to mean, apps, then small plates, then bigs. Instead, it appears to have been interpreted as "When the kitchen finishes everything." An understandable mistake, but disappointing because it really muddled the flavors, as the steak (usually my favorite) was really drowned out among the many other dishes.

Our waiter made up for it with incredible, genuine service, and we've learned to make the implicit explicit by spelling things out down the line.

We'll be back, but wish my dad's first visit (which I had talked up, like woah) was more enjoyable for him.

Also, dem biscuits, tho!

St. Anselm was incredible!!! You know it’s good food when you’re smiling the entire dinner and saying “oh my gosh” every other bite. We made reservations for 6:00 which was the perfect time for us as it was not too busy but starting to pick up. We had the biscuits with pimento cheese for an app, which sounds simple but had layers of flavor. My boyfriend ordered the butcher’s steak with garlic butter and said it was cooked to perfection. I ordered the bobo chicken (an entire young chicken fried), and it was amazing! Very tender and juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Be sure to specify you do NOT want the head and feet if you’re not that adventurous. Our service was also friendly, quick, and attentive! They really went above and beyond. We were visited by our server, two runners, and the manager to make sure we had everything we needed and were enjoying our meal. I cannot speak highly enough about this restaurant! I’m excited to return soon.
