Contemporary American
Located in the Union Market neighborhood, the second outpost of Joe Carroll’s popular NYC restaurant aims to bring some of the laid back vibes of Brooklyn to Washington, DC. St. Anselm is an American tavern devoted to the pleasures of grilled meats and great ingredients simply cooked. While steak is a specialty, the creativity of Chef Marjorie Meek-Bradley doesn’t stop there. Delicious food, eclectic wines (some on tap), and classic cocktails set the tone for a great experience. Paired with friendly service in an unpretentious setting adorned with quirky décor, dining at St Anselm is the total package.

We had such a great experience. My wife and I sat at the bar to relax for drinks before or meal in the dining room. Erin and Gram were very hospitable, knowledgeable and great bartenders all around. We then moved into the dining room and had the pleasure of Caroline's OUTSTANDING service and hospitality. I am very picky about wine and she was able to hit the nail on the head with everything I was looking for, well under my budget. We were checked on by Greg, the floor manager, who was absolutely the definition of hospitable. Warm, jovial, knowledgeable and just an absolute pleasure all around. This was my first visit and the food was outstanding, the "by the glass" list was anything but mundane, and their bottle list is top notch. The hospitality of those I mentioned is UNPARALLELED in this city's incredible and ever changing dining scene. We can't wait to come back!

-Cheers!

The food is fresh and delicious!!! The food is just the end, but the beginning starts with the superb service. Our server, Palmer, was attentive and personable...he ensured we were having a rememberable time. This is my go-to spot for laughter, delicious food, and hospitality!

The staff were very accommodating. Wish I would've gotten the name of our server so I could praise her by name. She was fabulous. We appreciate that the restaurant was willing to turn down the volume on the music to help with the noise level, but even with that the noise level was ~80 dbs.
The food was very good, with some items outstanding. We especially enjoyed the crab deviled eggs, biscuits, oysters, and iceberg salad. The New York strip was excellent. The steak fries, spinach, and mashed potatoes were very good. The cucumber salad and grilled broccoli were just ok. Reviews raved about the monster prawn; I thought it was good but nothing to write home about.
We went into the dinner planning for it to be a splurge, but $400 for 5 people with only 3 glasses of wine and 3 entrees (split) and no dessert is pretty steep. We'd return though! We appreciate the sustainable sourcing.

Food was very good here. Very rich and savory. The only problem is brunch can be a little too salty because they fry the hash browns in bacon greas.

The food and service were excellent. It is a pricey restaurant that warrants a special occasion. I thought the beer, cocktails and wine while very good, were very overpriced for the amount you were given. The cocktail was loaded with ice, the beer was tiny and the wine portions were on the small size despite the high price.

Lovely dinner for my daughter’s birthday- she’s a food lover and they knocked it out of the park- the biscuits were divine as was the lamb tartare. Salmon collar was as addictive as always, and the rainbow chard was a lovely surprise. Wonderful evening with superlative service!

Overall a good meal but there were a few issues. We ordered the grilled oysters and while the flavor was good I had a few oysters that still had pieces of shell in them, which I had to spit out. I had the butchers but, which was a hanger steak. The steak was very chewy ( I know these cuts of steak are chewy than most, but the cooking didn't allow for enough grill flavor) and did not have the amount of char I would like. I asked for some au poivre on the side, and which was presented room temperature and really didn't have as much flavor as I would like. All the other food was great and I would come back, just perhaps I would try something different. I was just expecting a more flavorful and charred piece of meat since it was advertised as wood grilled. I will say the service and attention from the staff was great.

We went early because we had a baby in a stroller with us. The service was terrific and the baby was not a problem for them. They have a good drink menu and the food was very good, especially the cucumber with whipped feta and the cauliflower. $32 was a little steep for a very small piece of rockfish but it was delicious. They also have outdoor dining as well. We plan to return soon.

Loved the focus on the essential flavors of top quality grilled meats and seafood, sauced to complement rather than overwhelm. The seasonal salads and veggies were perfection. I could spend a year lovingly acquainting myself with the exceptional wine menu. Especially recommend saving room for a Madeira flight after dinner.

Really happy we ended up here over 4th of July weekend! I always ask the people I'm dining with what their favorite part of the meal was, and if you're even considering sides in your top 3 dishes, then its clear the restaurant knows what they're doing. I couldn't get enough of the creamed spinach and the cauliflower was unlike anything I've ever had. The panfried mashed potatoes weren't anything to sneeze at either ;)

I don't think there was one item I wasn't super happy with. We also had the amazing (and overstuffed) blue crab deviled eggs, chicken liver mousse, lamb merguez, and the (truly) monster prawn. For our main course, my husband and I split the ribeye which was cooked to perfection -- we always have issues with our steaks being over done. Last, but certainly not least (this might actually take first prize here) the buttermilk biscuits with pimento cheese are a MUST. I repeat, do not leave the establishment without trying one of these!

Overall I would definitely recommend checking this place out. Being from Philadelphia and trying to make reservations in the DC area was actually really tough... Apparently a lot of places don't take more than 4 guests per group, which seems ridiculous to me, but I was so happy St. Anselm was able to accommodate our party of 7 -- which actually went up from 5 the day before our reservation. Two thumbs up!

We had an excellent and FUN meal at St. Anselm. We'd long been fans of Chef Marjorie Meek Bradley and we finally got to try her restaurant and meet her. She was super nice and very friendly. The atmosphere was fun and exciting - - great soundtrack playing fun, fast oldies like you would sing along with in the car. Table was easily large enough for two and gave us ample space from our neighbors. Server was prompt, efficient and super helpful. Great bar list with reasonable prices and the flights of after dinner drinks were a great idea. Food was very good - - - the biscuits tasted buttery and were served piping hot - - we asked for honey with ours and it was wonderful (ooey and gooey). The blue crab deviled eggs were creamy and rich - - probably the best I've ever eaten. One of us had a steak for dinner - - it was covered with a rich au poive sauce - - a little less cooked than requested but still very good and super tender. My husband ordered a 4th of July special, the Half Smoke with potato salad. Both very good and well prepared. Our favorite on the menu was the fried mashed potatoes. DELISH - great place, we will definitely be back. A+

Lovely restaurant. Great food, nice atmosphere, friendly service. Have been for dinner and brunch and both were outstanding. The salmon collar is wonderfully rich, steaks perfectly done, sides super tasty, and the burger they serve at brunch is the best in the city.

This was our second visit and we didn't like it as much this time as last. The wait staff recommendation to choose 2 from the left column and 2 from the right column produced enough food to feed four people. The portions were way too big. We do have a lot of leftovers but still, no one needs a full head of cauliflower to be served. If the sides and veggies are enough for 4 people, the menu or the wait staff should say so.

The biscuits pork sirloin (I think) was delicious and very successful. The chicken -- the ENTIRE chicken -- with head, beak, feet was absolutely alarming. That presentation was very off-putting.

Our server was very good. Host was welcoming and efficient. It's a good restaurant but I'm not sure we'll be back. The menu is quite limited and probably ought to reflect some seasonal options.

Took my husband here for his birthday dinner. We left very satisfied with our meal! The smoked oysters were heavenly, and can't say enough good things about those biscuits! I wasn't drinking that evening, and was pleasantly surprised that they offered a pretty wide variety (but most restaurant standards) of interesting non-alcoholic beverages ranging from artisan sodas to non-alcoholic cocktails that they had clearly put some real thought into. It was a very nice touch and much appreciated!
