Contemporary American
Located in the Union Market neighborhood, the second outpost of Joe Carroll’s popular NYC restaurant aims to bring some of the laid back vibes of Brooklyn to Washington, DC. St. Anselm is an American tavern devoted to the pleasures of grilled meats and great ingredients simply cooked. While steak is a specialty, the creativity of Chef Marjorie Meek-Bradley doesn’t stop there. Delicious food, eclectic wines (some on tap), and classic cocktails set the tone for a great experience. Paired with friendly service in an unpretentious setting adorned with quirky décor, dining at St Anselm is the total package.

I was looking forward to going to St Anselm for the past year. Great atmosphere, but food was average for the price. My meal was bland and overcooked. When I informed the server, he called the manager, and then backed off from providing service. The manager was ok but it felt they gave up on trying to please and just wanted us to leave. I'd go back for drinks but not food.

Second time to St Anselm’s. The food was well executed this time as last. The servers are all friendly and informative and it’s got that great balance of DC’s better restaurants off mixing casual feel with great food and service.

This is a fantastic restaurant, but the sound level is deafening, even for those seated in the "quiet" tables (we debated about whether we would be allowed to close the curtains). St. Anselm: please consider installing some acoustic tiles and perhaps some sound absorption on the bottom of the tables. Buzzy is great; not being able to hear one's dinner partner is not.

Great atmosphere and biscuits are best in town, but several other dishes were over seasoned.

St. Anselm-DC was a great choice! We were a big group and the service was amazing. We were sat at a great table and in an area where we did not feel squished. Please please order the biscuits and grilled oysters you will not be disappointed!!!

I dined with 4 friends and every single one of us was underwhelmed by our meal. The atmosphere was fun, the service was perfectly fine, but the food, from start to finish, just missed the mark.

Classic steakhouse. Good food, good wine. Service was excellent although our waiter was wearing a t-shirt with an unrelated picture on it (nothing to do with the steakhouse). We worried that he was a prankster taking our order while not really working there. That being said, the service was top notch.

I had skirt steak (tender, cooked to perfection) that was delicious. The others has salmon collar, lamb sirloin, ribeye. Equally pleased with their meals. Have the biscuits for appetizer - yum! We had sides to share - creamed spinach, mashed potatoes, and cauliflower. The potatoes are crisped on top which was a nice touch. Cauliflower was good, but I don't think ours was cooked enough (at all). Not sure that's what they were going for, but a small thing in the big picture.

We'll be back.

Average. Biscuits were as good as everyone says along with the pimento cheese. I would go back for those alone.

We went for Brunch. Our service was great, we were seated right away and our server was very attentive. Both of us had the steak and eggs which our server told us was the most popular item for Brunch. We also had the biscuits with pimento cheese. The biscuits were as advertised, far and away the best thing we had in an overall excellent meal. We'll be back to try some other things on their menu.

The alaskan king crab appetizer was excellent, but the butcher’s steak was just ok. The carrot cake was dry, but the ice cream cake was great. Biscuits were heavy, hate pimento cheese. Overall, just ok.

Never disappoints. I know, I know, it's NOT a steakhouse, but I still think these are the best steaks (and best valued) in town! Som Vanessa always has wonderful offbeat wines to recommend!

On arriving we immediately were struck by a happening vibe, even on a Sunday evening. We were greeted warmly and our table was ready on time. Notable among our appetizers were the delicious smoky grilled oysters, and blue crab deviled eggs. Wine list is huge and the knowledgable sommelier very helpful. Our mains were prepared as requested. We finished with 2 flights of Port and Madeira. A great evening!

Fairly limited brunch menu and bacon was all fat. Main dishes that they do offer are good. Prices are competitive given other restaurants in area.

My parents were visiting from out of town and absolutely EVERY SINGLE DETAIL was taken care of. My dad is a huge wine snob - St Anselm has a beverage specialist who made the extensive wine list easy to review. Our server was knowledgeable of every ingredient and excited to talk about the dishes. The food was perfect (underline, bold and 1,000 exclamation points). I had the whole mackerel, and holy mackerel, it was one of the better fish dishes I’ve had in DC. As a southerner with a palate for biscuits and pimento cheese, I would rank St Anselm’s in my top 5. Great customer service, knowledgeable staff and delectable food. Did I mention the amazing wine list? What about the great bourbon and whiskey selection? Not a single bad thing to say, other than I wish I knew more about Shriners... Thank you, St Anselm, for a great evening!

Great restaurant. Everyone that works there was exceptional. Our waitress was extremely helpful with our vegetarian friend and insisted on changing out her drink when it was not to her liking. The food is top notch and has a nice variety of choices. Overall one of the best experiences we have had at a restaurant in a while.

The food was excellent. Some of the highlights for me include: Caesar Kalettes, Butchers steak and biscuits. The desserts were the only item that didn’t live up to the hype.

Would definitely go back in the future.
